Most football commentators these days are. Derm can be bad but there's others who are worse.

He craps on like he's a dad at a high school footy game. Always giving meaningless advice on what he thinks the players should be doing whilst the game is going on. He cannot go 2 minutes without stroking his ego by saying shit that he thinks makes him appear to be all knowledgeable like an old master of the game. Just stfu Dermott and call what's happening.

Replace Dermott Brereton with any other Fox or Seven commentator, pretty much the same thing. I believe they all receive the same "how to commentate" booklet when they apply for the job.

lol, you have to be kidding, he is dumb, just gotta listen to him using what he thinks are 'big' words in the wrong context to know that. He was a great player, his football analysis is poor in many instances.

Suggesting that Derm has a good footy brain isn't really laughable, he would be the best special comments man IMO if not for what Atley described, **** he waffles on wayyy too much and for way too long. Also has a touch of the Jason Dunstalls in that he can be overly negative and usually picks something trivial to bitch about for the game.

it's funny that the "special comments" people are the worst of the lot, or to quote darce, the "absolute" worst

his performance when we played the giants this season was unbelievable. i've never heard someone rooting for a team like that. he was just cheering their kids and egging them on to win their battles and the entire game was called from the giants perspective.

This is my first post in years just because I have to agree so much. Unless he's calling (used very loosely) the Doggies, I have to turn off any game he is covering. He gets to me that much. Can't stand the sound of his voice, how full of himself he is, and the worst is how he always says "back when I played....*insert tough comment about myself*.... modern game these days".
God help us if he makes a comment and it comes true during the game. You'll never hear the end of it, just 30 minutes of him referencing said comment.
Agree that he has some good/unique insight at times, but would prefer if he wrote it down and passed it to someone who could actually spit it out in less than 3 minutes.

I don't mind Dermie. People here seem to want every commentator to be exactly the same. That'd be incredibly boring.

Dermie's clearly enthusiastic about the game. He doesn't try and pretend he's some unbiased oracle. He loves Cyril and hates Essendon. It's refreshing hearing someone just be out there about things like that. He's having fun at the footy.

Give me Dermie over someone like Mark McLure who sounds like he hates his life and everyone around him.

I really enjoy his commentary. Yes he waffles on and does take the "father of football" role on, which can get a bit much.

But he actually talks about tactics and game trends instead of:
- Judd! Cyril! Ablett! Isn't he the greatest ever in the history of greatness! At the expense of all else
- relying on saying wowee or pretending to be excited
- barracking for the underdog and ignoring anything the overdog does
- sitting on the fence or stating the obvious

Agree with all that, just wish he didn't turn every comment into a three act play.
