Dermott's rant re:Watters on SEN

Poor form from Brereton in my opinion. He has been talking his good mate Scott Watters up since he was appointed senior coach by St Kilda. Now his buddy has been sacked he jumps on SEN mouthing off the usual garbage of 1 flag etc. Comments he made criticising Chris Pelchen are typical of Brereton and border on embarrassing.

Intelligence is knowing what to do. Wisdom is knowing when to do it. Watters could very well be the third most intelligent man in football, but if his timing is off regarding moving on senior players etc. then he could still be considered dumb.

Dermie sounds like the whinging mate of a bloke who got the sack. A bloke who in 2 years has not shown a hell of a lot to be considered one of footballs smartest. The Terry Wallet comments certainly didn't help his case.

Seems to me the current board are invested in Pelchen but weren't in Watters. They gave Pelchen so much power so need to make it work or they look bad. I like it how Dermie says he doesn't hang around dickheads, to paraphrase a saying, if you don't know who the dickhead in your life is, it's probably you. Oh and he calls Wallace a genius. What?

I'll admit that this hasn't been handled well, although as I've said before, I don't rate Watters. The league's three worst coaches have been sacked this year, and clubs are realising that there's no point having a hack at the helm. Better to get rid of them immediately. Or not hire them in the first place.

I don't get the whole Buddy Franklin thing either. Whoever was responsible, he fell into their laps after four other teams decided to take the other four 'sure things' heading into that draft. Whoever it was, it's like saying the equivalent person at West Coast was a genius for taking Judd in 2001. I could have made those decisions.

That's ridiculous. The coach and players are employed to play football. If they have trouble doing that they are moved on. Pelchen's position is under scrutiny as well, from the board and senior management at the club and he will stand or fall depending upon the decisions he is making today and in the future.

I disagree, plenty of clubs have the same set up as the Saints and it works well for them. It's a good safeguard against the coach sacrificing the long term strategies of the club to save his own skin if the team isn't performing well.

The key is to have a quality guy running the football dept who has a good working relationship with the head coach. Pelchen seems like a pretty abrasive control freak from all accounts.
