I don't have a huge interest in this topic but.....

when clubs do not field a team on a round by round basis the games are still counted, they are assumed to have lost...but you don't have:

Port 22 Games 22 wins percentage 156%
Fremantle 21 games 21 wins percentage 170%

and have Fremantle declared the winner if the forfeighted their last game casue Tany Modra went surfing.

I don't quite see what the diference is. They chose not to compete, but you can't just opt in or out of the comp as you see fit and expect that those years wont count.

By all accounts Port will have a pretty bad year next year so count us out as we don't want to blemish our record...we'll be back later (do you think anyone will notice we have gone ??)

So include me in the Sooky camp.

If the clubs that do not field a team on a seasonal basis, wouldn't that mean that all the teams that were scheduled to play that particular team, be awarded 4 match points.

A similar situation exists today in the NSL with the Carlton Soccer Club. All teams that have played Carlton or were scheduled to play Carlton were awarded the maximum amount of points, which is 3. This is regardless of whether a club lost their games against Carlton or not.

Getting back on track, I am relatively positive that this did not happen to Essendon, or any other teams that did not field teams during WWI. That is, that any remaining clubs in the competition at the time did not receive any match points against teams that "withdrew" from competition.

To sum it all up, that is one the reasons why it is viewed that Essendon and other clubs, withdrew from the VFL. That means that they did not forfeit any matches and subsequently, left the competition.

If they had done that then the Carlton Soccer Club example would have occurred (eg. points being awarded to other teams).

Dan, lifting against another side doesn't necessarily equate to winning the match. Nor does it mean that the other team doesn't lift even more in intensity. Carlton do lift against Essendon. They have just been on the wrong side of the ledger in recent times. The game you refer to where Silvagni stuffed up a kick out in the last minute of play. Carlton lifted for that game and looked home. Essendon lifted in the last quarter and came over the top. What about the draw when Sticks kicked out on the full? Or the 1993 Qualifying final where we won by 2 points (?). Did we not beat you during one of your halcyon years (1985 I think)? I recall another game in 1986 where we held on to win by 1 point by bottling up play in our forward line for the last few minutes. 1999 might have been lucky in your eyes but you can't deny we lifted immensely to try to upset you.

I am a Carlton supporter. I watch every single game and I know when they are switched on or not. It is not hard to see when the intensity and hardness at the ball and opposition is turned up a notch. You say Essendon lift against us? Great. I don't even notice Essendon out there. My focus is purely on our own players and what they are doing. We lift alright. If we can lose Bradley and Kouta and still push a team who hadn't lost all year up to tat point, there is something in it.

Hey, CJH, I was wondering if the little tag-stealer would post on the Hawks Forum, but then I remembered that I had to sell myself and register to do that!
