Good news for us - the government are here to help us! We can register to stop telemarketers pestering us on https://www.donotcall.gov.au/

Of course, the system is overloaded on the first day....

Registering your telephone number on the Do Not Call Register will not stop all telemarketing calls to your number. There are some exemptions which enable certain public interest organisations to make telemarketing calls. Exempt organisations include charities, religious organisations and registered political parties. You can also still receive calls from market researchers.

I've signed up, although I suspect it's an exercise in futility; as it's unenforcable outside Australia. Sadly, I expect it will be regularly flouted by Indians - in the same way that they currently thumb their noses at existing laws, ethics or manners.

I never spend that much time on my home phone, since I use dialup it saves them from calling and they don't have my mobile number so I am safe. ...for now.

I think you'll find that Liberal Party donors ($100,000+) will manage to find their way onto the exemptions list as well.

You need to also include your states code (i.e 03, 04, 05.) if you are doing it via mobile number you have to add the 61 as well.

I actually managed to get one to hang up on me the other night doing my best impression of Special Ed from Crank Yankers, it was hard trying to keep a straight face whilst this gibbering ethnic keep repeating my surname and trying his best to sell me some crap I wasn't interested in.

PLaying with telemarketers is great fun. I like to say something like "Can you just hang on a minute I have something on the stove." Then just put phone down until they hang up. If in a bad mood just give it to them with both barrels. Good way to release some tension and anger.
