Do we have any genuine quick bowlers left?

Bowlers that can deliver at really high speeds and maintain consistent line and length are as rare as hen's teeth. Pattinson and Steyn are probably the only two in world cricket who can do it on a regular basis right now. Starc, Cummins and Johnson can do it sometimes but you have to take their inconsistency if you want a genuine speedster in the team. People forget how inconsistent even our greatest express bowlers like McDermott and Thompson were.

But I don't think you have to be pushing 150kph to be regarded as a 'genuine quick'. When you look at these English batsman, 140kph is plenty quick enough to bother them - and we have lots of bowlers capable of those speeds. Indeed, it's often preferable with good control. One of our big up and comers at the moment is Gurinder Sandhu, who is big and strong enough to be an express bowler but has consciously chosen to stick in the 135-140kph range.

McGrath, Gillespie and Clark are our best of the last ten years and none of them were tearaways. Give me line and length with a dose of cricket smarts over raw pace any day.

Gillespie at his peak was a 150kmph bowler.

Yep. And even past his peak, he regularly clocked 140+.

And McGrath's pace was under rated. His height and high arm position gave him good bounce. Facing deliveries of 135kmph with steepling bounce is pretty hard work.

The OP is asking about bowlers whose number one weapon is speed. Gillespie was fast but line and length was his main game.

Anyway, I was stuffing around on Youtube last night and found this:

Caesar, Pattinson can get carried away and bowl junk. He's still young and really needs to work on his patience. Bit much calling him similar to Steyn.

He'll get there, I'm pretty sure as he's got a great attitude, but not there yet. Also, depends if his body can be relied upon to bowl at speed.

Cummins could be if we give him time to get his body right. I think he would be better off bowling in the low to mid 140's and using his height to get bounce with control though.Decent express speed bowlers are rare. If you dont posses an action as perfect as steyns you need to rely on long run ups or slinging actions, both of which arent the best for durability.

The sling bowlers always do look potentially devastating though, Ahktar could have been a great if he wasnt such a knob.

Who's that Tassie quick? Rainbird. How quick is he?

not express from what i've seen, quick enough though, sort of Faulkner ish.

Cummins, Patto and Starc are the three i reckon are capable of really firing up, dougie isn't exactly slow either, especially when he gets his tail up

Lee was express, but I think suffered from having a conventional action and low release point. When he first came onto the first class/ODD scene he created a bit of carnage.

Tait was just that little bit quicker and with his side arm slinging type action and unpredictability would've been a nightmare to face. The spell he bowled against South Africa where he smacked AB de Villiers on the hip was about the most brutal I've seen.

Diet plus improved training methods means that bowling will continue to get faster. Siddle is freakishly fast compared to a few decades ago, and the fact that he keeps it going into the 3rd session is also freakish.

It is just that an out and out tear away that can play at test cricket level isn't common and there is perhaps one or two every decade. Gillespie and Lee were there for a while, though Gillespie pulled it back a few notches to prolong his career. Tait can't be considered because he was incapable at test level.

Pattison, Cummings and Stark can all bowl well at speeds over 140 so we've got plenty in stock. Also my 14 year old has given up leg spin .... so you never know!

That field set up!

Anyway, if Pattinson could become more consistent and Cummins could consistently get on the park, those two together would be fearsome.

I think people are getting a little carried away with the pace thing. The pitch was extremely helpful (bounce wise) for quicks and foreign for a lot of English players.

The roads are when they can become a bit of a liability as Genuine pace is paired with genuine inaccuracies.

In terms of domestic scene, Jason behrendorf and coulter-Nile have got wheels.
