I hate them with a passion, probably since the mid eighties and the way the hawks supporters carried on after the Matthews-Bruns incidents. Not to mention I'd reckon we'd have at least three more premierships by now if it wasn't for the hawks. I'd be quite happy for th

I don't have a problem with any of the current team, even though Buddy is obviously a tosspot off the field.

I expect they love us though.

Interested to see the main reason for hate seemed to be about Buddy. I think if you really look at him, he is just a fun loving kid that still needs more time to mature. Put yourself in his shoes. The first Aboriginal to achieve 100 goals.

And unlike other players, he is only on about 450k pa. He could easily held out for much much more - that must surely say something about who he is deep down. We are all arrogant to some extent - Franklin has to deal with rediculuos fan fare, media and day by day scrutinization. No idea how I could handle that....

All that said and done, I think there a touch of empathy I feel for you guys coz you lost to us when you were clearly the most dominant side. That is one of the anomalies in the system. So be it.

But.....I still desperately want to beat the cats again in a GF. That's cruel I know, but it's the nature of the beast. If we won 5 in a row against them:p (B/shit) then I may feel it's time to let you guys win one. But most likely not.....:o

Anyway, good luck for next year. You guys will be hoping for Egan to come back and for a big preseason and contribution form Tomma in 09.

PS: I think Buddy may not kick as many goals next year, but I reckon he will improve. His modest return from the GF will spur him on. He needs to get a bit more bulk and improve his positioning. Will be interesting to watch considering he had a pretty stuffed shoulder all year.....

I actually had hoped at least one Hawk would have picked-up my reference to Buddy's 100 in 100 days having nothing to do with goals. All the Hawkers I know don't stop talking about that bet.;)

BTW. If he played for us no one would mind his so-called arrogance.

Hawks are fine, supporters are fine, buddy is fine.

I'm pissed off we were done and would be feeling negative towards any team that did it to us.

Also a bit pissed off that we were seen as arrogant when all we were doing was winning. Extra pissed off the hawks supporters used the 89' thing and backed it up by winning. That made it hurt a little more.

I was shitty with the hawks a year ago when they were playing boring footy, and I disliked the swans for the same reason.

Most of all I hate the pies because they are inbred from the club through to the supporters.

Oh... and rnd 1 means nothing. Sure the media will beat it up.
But if the hawks come back anything like the cats did this year then both clubs will still be unfit and in 2nd gear.

There is no revenge claimed for a GF loss in rnd 1

People call players arrogant tossers without even knowing them. Actually, I have no idea what you meant then by that bet.

As to the person who didn't like the thread, cheers big ears.:)

I think Buddy is a freak of a player...
He is certainly arrogant in the way he plays (best displayed by the fact that if he takes a mark within kicking distance, he turns his back on the play and struts back for his shot...never mind if someone's on their own in the square! Pet hate of mine...).
However....
It's just youth and he backs it up!
Carey had it...Brereton had it...Brown had it...you need that wild self belief to make you the player you are.
He'll settle down over the next year or 2, particularly if they don't go back to back and his wayward kicking has something to do with it...which is bound to happen at some stage.
Once/if he gets his head straight he could be the best ever IMO.
I would like to see Tom Hawkins develop a bit of arrogance in his play next year. I know his playing character wouldn't make him selfish, but he needs to recognise that the sky's the limit and he has the tools to dominate his position.

Great post

Um! My reference to arrogance was what some had suggested in this thread about him. References to strut-n-stuff. I was just wondering whether, if he played for us, they would view it differently - that's all. For the record I don't see him as arrogant.

Don't recall saying I didn't like the thread either. Perhaps you're a bit hung over from a Saturday skin-full and that might explain your wide-of-the -mark post.;)

Ask around about the 100 in 100 days bet. You must know some real-deal Hawkers.:)

I don't hate the Hawks particularly, although they do seem to have a higher than average proportion of arrogant 20-something supporters, both on BF and at games.

I would, however, struggle to support a club that had an absolute evil tosser like Jeff Kennett as president and was heavily sponsored by a corrupt Tasmanian government/Gunns. When I bring these points up with politically-aware Hawthorn supporting friends, they have no response other than to shrug and mumble, or to say 'I can't defend those things'.

I am just as p***ed off with the limp effort shown by the Geelong team on GF day. If they don't come out breathing fire in 2009, then I'll be angry

I hate them with a passion, probably since the mid eighties and the way the hawks supporters carried on after the Matthews-Bruns incidents.

Exactly...that's where it started with me. After Matthews sniped Brunsy from behind....I have hated them since them. Then 89 sealed it.:mad:

I hate Hawthorn because of you ....
I never hated Geelong till the preseason of 2007, Geelong for me has always been a thing of derision. Everytime I thought of Geelong I laughed, they were the biggest joke ever, then their arrogance turned to hate. Now I just pity them, St Kilda has become the biggest joke in World Sport.

You're the biggest joke on this forum.

Word for word how I felt about Hawthorn until the 2008 GF.

I realise a fierce rivalry is building between Hawks and Cats. I understand a lot of u have a certain amount of contempt for the Hawks. Personally, I admire the Cats and Thompson. I have had my angry moments with Thommo and his comments pre-Tassie game, where we just scraped over the line.

The Grand Final was amazing for Hawks supporters. But hey, you guys were massive winners in 07.

I firmly believe both sides will come out stronger next year.

It will be fascinating to see how Geelong approaches round 1. Likewise the Hawks. Surely the most anticipated game in a loooong time.

I am a touch sorry for how some Hawks supporters carry on - crap like we "own" the cats. At the same time, the Cats will feel a bit ripped off by the Hawks, so a unique rivalry is building. You guys are still a little ahead of us. If Hawkins steps up, you will be a handfull.

Back to the thread title. Do you hate us? If so why? You guys really carried on after the 07 win, that you can't deny. I hope we don't do the same. I don't visit bay 13 much but I'm sure it's coming thick and fast there.

Hate/respect/despise/? Or other. How do you guys feel right now.

The main feeling I feel is probably shock, even now after a month has passed, I'm still in shock and just devastated really.
I don't hate the Hawks, but whenever I see them on T.V It certainly stirs up a lot of disappointment. Its amazing how this game makes you feel.

I think had the cats have won the flag, they could be then excused for taking their foot of the pedal, but now after being beaten on the big stage It will perhaps make them appreciate more what a premiership really means, especially to the younger players of the cats.

I think you have to say that the cats got ahead of themselves, & the hawks wanted it more and held their composure and possibly caused the biggest upset in the history of football.

I think some Hawks fans who will gloat and brag, will eventually be brought down to earth again, just like some Cats fans were a month ago. The better you think you are, the harder you will fall, and it WILL happen, so theres no point in hating them cos they'll lose one day and the disappointment they'll feel is punishment enough...

When Hawthorn lose next, whenever it may be, you yourself will be the subject of your own ridicule.
I pity you.

Dude!

Not even close!

Geelong finished first and lost to the team that finished second; a team that was good enough to go 17-4 131%. This would win a team the minor premiership in many years. Geelong was never able to win 17 games in the H&A in the Blight/Ayres years.

Hawthorn were $2.65 at the TAB for most of GF week - this is not the price of a rank outsider. It wasn't outrageous for people to tip them.

In the 1998 GF North had finished #1 and lost to Adelaide who hadn't even finished in the top-four and had lost their first final by 60+ points.

In 1999 Essendon finished #1 and lost to Carlton (6th and lost their first final by 70+) in the prelim. That was an upset; the 1999 Cats were shit and even they managed to beat that Carlton side twice. :)

Say what you want about the 2008 GF but it definitely was not the setting for "possibly the biggest upset in the history of football".

_____________________________________________________________

As for Hawthorn I just wish they were a little bit more honest with themselves as to how their list was created. ;)

Why does Lance Franklin play for them? Because they were so insipid in 2004 they couldn't even win 5 games. Their premiership B&F and Coleman medalist is a Hawk only because they were terrible and qualified for a concession that would not have been available to them if it happened 2 years later because then it was changed to two seasons of <5 wins to get the extra pick. If that rule had come in earlier they would only have been able to get Roughead and would they still be good enough to be where they are today?

Geelong has never failed to win 5 games in a season in my entire life. From 1995-2005 Hawthorn were a bottom-four team five times. Geelong has never been bottom-four in the "expansion era", i.e. since 1987.

Why does Luke Hodge play for them? Because they finished 15th in 1997 and drafted Croad at #3 who they were then able to use as part of a trade to get Freo's #1 pick in 2001. Without Hodge would they have won the 2008 GF?

I wish their fans could just say we probably won the 2008 flag because we were very poor in past seasons. _Chewy_ probably would IMO; he's cool. :thumbsu:

Yes I know, Scarlo and GAJ came to us not conventionally through the draft but they didn't come to us because we were awful. I can understand that we got a little lucky with these players but they were not "blue chip" prospects as juniors. If Tomahawk becomes a force in this competition I'll cop any criticism people might have because he was a possible #1 selection in 2006.

Richmond beat us with what was almost the last kick of the game. That's how close we were to missing out on the priority pick... Sure it's good fortune. Don't forget Ablett snr went to Geelong from Hawthorn... Luck is always involved.

A huge part of our success is due to a complete rebuild via the legitimate system. Unlike Carlton we even traded our goalkicker Thommo so we put a strategy in place and stuck to it. Luck is always a big factor in winning a flag. Look how the Saints were decimated with injuries when they were the team to beat.

We had many suspensions and injuries this year but things came together at the right time. The danger the Hawks and Cats face is the possibility we will be too focused on each other and not pay enough respect to the other teams. We may both miss out in 09...

These are very uneducated comments (especially the bold one!). Buddy is a team man. He may be arrogant (understandably) and may even be a ******** when out on the tiles, but on the field he plays for his club, not himself. You will never see him in a strop if a lead is ignored.

We are aware that he shoots most of the time, but to think he isn't given explicit instructions to shoot when he gets the chance is ignorant.

Don't buy into the hype created by the haters in this country.

I hated Carey when I was 13, because the media loved him and he was just so good. I was 13...

Forgive me if I didn't base my Thesis on "Buddy Franklin, they myth, the man, the legend" as you obviously have.

I don't hate Buddy, I think he is a fantastic talent and great to watch but from what I've seen he is selfish around goals. I didn't suggest that I was basing this on anything else but my own opinion as uneducated as you may think it is.

I don't understand this "selfish" tag that Buddy has acquired. If I was being harsh, I'd probably call it something more like "outlandish" or "flairy". He's a goal-kicker for crying out loud... it's what he does for a living!

He gives goals away too... and did so on at least one occasion in the GF. He just gets a LOT of opportunities at goal every week... it's not his fault he's hard to match up on. If I had that kind of talent, I'd be having a ping as much as I could too! :)

Hate is a strong word. I like to pretend to hate the Hawks, especially when talking with hawk supporting friends, because footy with out rivalry and boasting is just that little bit less interesting.

You're only giving Cat's fans a bad name with posts like this. Sure, I can't stand the way many Hawk fans carry on - most are probably 12 year olds. Don't know why there is a need for some to act like total morons - but we're all a cross-section of society. Simple. Imagine if Blues' supporters were in the Cats or Hawks shoes - they would be unimaginably unbearable.

As for Franklin. Come on. Selfish? Sometimes he shoots for goal instead of dishing it off - true. He is almost better dishing it off when he is 30m out directly in front:p. He often bags the impossible angle goals. So how on earth do you coach that??? As a person, who in their right mind would accept 450 odd K in his shoes. He could easily command what Judd gets and make a squillion in endorsements - that, my friend, speaks volumes for him as a bloke. Fair is fair.

Did you see him down at all with his measly 2 goal haul in the GF - I think not. This kid can't have a coffee without people taking photos of him with their mobiles. It's ludicrous. People are mad. He is only flesh and blood who plays a game with a funny shaped ball. Get a life - for those who can't give someone the space to have a caffeine fix.

I can assure you that I'm not 12 years old. Look one of your compatriots asked the question, then backed it up with random comments. I used 'fact' to base an argument that he is selfish, if so he wouldn't have been in so much trouble in the first place. Undertaking such behaviour would be replicated on the park, sure maybe not at the moment, but like the reference to Carey posit, it will only take time.

Why was the post in bad taste and giving Geelong supporters a bad name? Is stating fact a reason to provide such? Your idle comment doesn't understand the deeper knowledge required to understand what is happening to our sporting stars, to why they overindulge. Where my comment was leading was to that exact statement, that it is a self-indulgent decline that they go on.

However, maybe in your mind fact is fiction, and you are prepared to keep your head in the sand for yet another time.

That's why I said possibly, I'm not old enough to have witnessed every game in history.
Geelong won 23 out of their 24 games of the year and lost the Grand Final,
Yes Hawthorns 17-4 131% was outstanding, but compare that to Geelongs 21-1 161.84%.

I, in my opinion would say that that is the biggest upset in history.
You're right in saying that the 98 GF was a HUGE upset, but North hadn't won 42 out of their last 44 games.

Geelongs win/loss record has well exceeded anyones in history (as far as I know) and to lose on the big stage was nothing short of a MASSIVE upset.
And all credit to Hawthorn, Geelong weren't good enough. Thats what happens when you get ahead of yourself (forward 50 of Geelong), and they'll be better off for it in the future.

Before the GF I started a thread 'I don't hate the Hawks.'

I still don't hate the Hawks, they were the better coached team on the day. I certainly don't hold anything against our players (except Stokes issue was disappointing), as they were held to playing within their skins.

I am more disappointed in our not addressing weaknesses in coaching, tactical issues not being addressed. Hawthorn exploited our few weaknesses.

The smarter bullfighter slays the stronger bull. I am not saying that our coaching is bad, just having unaddressed weaknesses that made them look pathetic. I am disappointed in the coaches, not the players. The coaches blew the GF imo. So how can I hate the Hawks for this?

(The AFL being a $700million entertainment industry doesn't help either. I couldn't understand Kennet gloating about a dynasty BEFORE the GF - being the underdogs. If this was ASIC - an insider trader investigation would be underway.)

Hate/respect/despise/? Or other. How do you guys feel right now.

I personally hate you guys for three reasons...

1. Buddy Franklin.
2. Your supporters- mainly due to the fact during the Geelong v Hawks game during the year, I had to move seats at half time (first time i've ever had to do that in 15 years mind you), because of the complete and utter disgraceful Hawks supporters sitting near us.
3. Buddy Franklin.

Having said that i will forever hate Essendon more. ;):thumbsu:
