We've got a pool. It's ****ing awesome but we can't be bothered maintaining it ourselves so we have a pool man who looks after it for us. It's quite expensive to run but we do get a fair bit of use out of it. We have solar heating so it does require a couple of hot days in a row for it to warm up to a really nice temperature.

I think the amount of use you get out of it depends on the size of the pool as well. Mine is big and 7ft deep at one end, so it's good for swimming. I have an aunt who has a small pool that is the same depth for the whole length and they only use it on extremely hot days.

7m? Is that a typo? Even 2m is pretty deep for a home pool.

missus wants one. I don't see it worth the investment, especially as we live a block away from the town pool conplex

Does it have a shade sail?

No unfortunately. Where it's positioned does get covered in shade later in the afternoon but in the morning it's in the full sun. It used to be surrounded by trees but we cut them down because of the bush fire risk where we live. We have a roofed gazebo next to the pool to get some relief in the shade.

They are very expensive to maintain - not just in terms of chemicals and water, but the electricity to run the pumps.

Solar heating makes it even more expensive again, but it extends the swimming season significantly. If I went to the expense of installing a pool, I'd get it - otherwise it just sits unused for 9 months of the year.

My parents have a small pool, and it's fantastic - on Christmas Day it was a stinker, we just put an umbrella over one end and were in and out of the water all afternoon. But purely on the basis of cost it's nowhere near worth it for them (especially since they live near the beach). They just like the privacy and convenience.

I reckon a pool would be great if you had kids - we had one when I was a kid, and the entire neighbourhood would spend all summer in there. But as an adult I think I'd struggle to justify the expense in any house I owned myself.

Not sure how the capital costs of installing a pool affect the sale price of a property. Would be interested to hear, if there's a real estate agent around.

From an investment point of view you won't get the captial expenditure back when you sell if you live south of Coffs Harbour as you won't be using it for over half the year. From a personal view, if you are actually going to use it properly then it might be worth it, but if you want it only for the really hot days save your money.

Yeah that's my thinking. The house came with an in ground spa which we rarely use, her parents have a pool they haven't used more than 5 times a year recently... It just ain't worth it when it costs $5 to use the local a 5 minute walk away. Then you have to add time and costs and effort requires for maintainence, and the space a decent sized one will take up in the yard (too much IMO).

Just not something I see value in all things considered

It's good when you're really young.

They just become a pain in the ass

There are a lot of home buyers who will walk away the moment they see a pool because they don't want the upkeep.
