"Close, but no cigar"

This is more for the older people but when my brother was watching wheel of fortune the other day this was a final puzzle thing and he said "oh that's easy" and then my mum who is hell smart, doctor, heaps intelligent etc. said that she wouldn't have got it.

I thought everyone knew this quote but then we asked my dad and he didn't know it either, then my aunty, uncle, grandpa, grandma and none of them knew it.

Is it a generational thing or are their some older people who know of it?

I thought everyone did and it was common knowledge.

I'm 31, and I'm familiar with the expression. But my Dad wasn't - I was at the footy with him at a game this year and someone bombed a 70m torp that hit the post, I said "Close but no cigar" and Dad thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard.
He'd never heard that expression before - I've got no idea where I picked it up from.

Obviously it didn't rub off on to you then!! :D

The week of Round 21 I heard the phrase. I was in a handball competition with Rohan Smith and other folk, and the dude with the microphone commentated everyone’s handballing attempt. I lost count how many times he bloody said, “Close, but no cigar”
