Do you smoke?

Gave the filthy stinking things up 10 years and 8 months ago ... same time I gave up drinking. I've got no doubt that if I ever pick up a drink again I'll be smoking uncontrollably within minutes or, at best, hours.

Absolutely THE worst drug on the planet (and I've used most of them).

It is devastating to your health.
It is more addictive than heroin.
It makes your fingers go yellow.
It makes you stink.
It has NONE of the pleasurable effects that make drugs like alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or heroin so seductive.

So WHY did I ever take it up?

Stuffed if I know ... peer group pressure when I was a kid ... trying to act "tough" ... thought I was being a rebel ... by the time I realised I'd been conned I was addicted.

Over the years I gave it up several times ... with EXTREME difficulty ... but my downfall always came whenever I got on the grog. The two just go together. One drink completely weakens my resolve ... so I have another drink ... then a smoke ... one smoke weakens my resolve not to smoke ... next thing you know, I'm chain-smoking and drinking myself senseless.

The way to stop is to just stop ... no great secret there ... but much easier said than done ... forget the nicorette gum or the patches or any of that crap ... that just keeps you addicted ... you've just gotta make the break.

And don't even bother trying to delude yourself into thinking you can "cut down". It's the FIRST cigarette that does the damage.

And if you're also an alcoholic, like me, you've gotta do the same with grog ... just give it up ... you might shiver and shake and go into the DTs ... you might need medical supervision for a few days ... but give it up ... and remember that it's the FIRST drink that does the damage.

My last cigarette was on Christmas Day 1995.
My last drink of alcohol was on Boxing Day 1995.

But I'm only ONE drink away from my next smoke ... and I'm only ONE smoke away from being a full-blown smoker again.

I only smoke once every month or so when I am out drinking. I don't know which poll answer this applies to.

Put me in the 'never have, never will' category.

Once I'd started going out with my girlfriend I found out she had just quit smoking. Apparently she was a smoker while I was pursuing her, but I never saw it. Funny because I wouldn't have been interested in her if I knew. Disgusting, horrible habit. The people that start smoking these days knowing the risks just amaze me. I can understand the adults that smoke since when they started all the fact about smoking weren't known, and now they're addicted. But man, the amount of 20-year old girls that smoke at the moment is disgusting.

In recent times I've been lighting a few up, mainly when intoxicated and others offer them to me.

Could easily go weeks without touching one though, I don't find them addictive at all.
Easiest way i know to start smoking and hardest way to stop.

No. Never have, never will.
It's a disgusting habbit in term of smell and the effect on your teeth/fingers and even more seriously when it clearly states "this can cause lung cancer" and other diseases I cannot for the life of me understand why people would.

This is a very interesting point.

In the 1990s (perhaps also today?) the rate of smoking among teens was substantially higher than ever before.

These were kids that were bombarded with graphic anti-smoking messages.
They would almost never have seen cigarette advertisements.
They legally had to be 18 to buy cigs;); in the past it was 16.

Governments were moving heaven and earth to discourage smoking. Yet the amount of people who started smoking INCREASED. WTF happened?

My perception is that more people today take up smoking but they tend to quit after 10-15 years; in comparison with previous eras there are more 15-30 year old smokers today but vastly fewer middle aged smokers. Agreed?

BTW Do people know that smoking costs the country about $700 million a year in increased healthcare expenses? Do people also know that tobacco excises make the country about $7 billion dollars a year? Smokers kick in $6.3 billion net to the public purse! Smokers are patriots!:)
