This week I downloaded a 3 part doco from eztv called 'Stalingrad', part 1 of 3 is 'The assault'.

As a keen observer of military history, anything to do with Stalingrad I watch, after all without doubt it is the greatest battle in Military history. This 3 part series covers both the German and Soviet side including the strategies (mistakes) of the Germans and the resilient defence 'at all costs' of the soviets. Highly reccomended and you may shed a tear, just think about being in light clothing in minus 30 degree temperatures.....would you resort to cannibalism?

Come across another that is in torrent land at the moment. Fire in the Night: tells the incredible true story behind the Piper Alpha disaster. The worst ever of its kind that killed 167 men when a North Sea oil rig became a huge fireball.

For the first time a documentary presents the astonishing testimonies from the survivors who found themselves in the midst of an inferno, and through dramatic reconstruction, how they escaped the burning rig. Newly released recordings reveal how the coastguards and emergency services reacted to the disaster. Bloody amazing stuff.

I might have to watch.

I'm currently reading "Stalingrad" by Antony Beevor.

3 of my favourites:

"The Beckoning Silence" is a fascinating doco about the deaths of 4 Austrian climbers on the Eiger. It's narrated by Joe Simpson who almost died and was one of the subjects in "Touching the Void"

"Crumb" is a poignant and ultimately sad portrayal of 60's cartoonist Robert Crumb and his highly disfunctional upbringing. It's sad because his brothers are also portrayed in the doco and one of them committed suicide during the making of the film. Produced by David Lynch

"Fall in Light" about Jeff Buckley

Another one doing the rounds in torrent land at the moment is a doco about Formula 1 racing called '1' and how Formula one went from being a sport where drivers were killed/hurt regularly to a reasonably safe sport since the death of Senna. This doco takes you right back to the halcyon days of the 60's up to the modern era.

Lots of spectacular crashes and behind the scenes interviews. A very interesting look at the sport. 8/10

A must see doco you can find in torrent land now:

Dirty Wars - An eye opening and mind blowing doco about how a covert US paramilitary organisation known as JSOC is assassinating people all over the world suspected of terrorism. The only problem is a lot of these people are actually innocent civilians, women, and children. This documentary by investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill really brings home the dark side of the world we live in, and how the United States Government & President Obama are drenched in the blood of the innocent. Chilling. 8/10

"One Day in September"

A truly disturbing documentary about the 1972 Munich Olympic hostage crisis. You learn more from this than the Steven Speilberg film "Munich". They actually have interviews from the surviving terrorists.

Sports and politics should never mix, an absolute tragedy that changed the world forever.

Yeah that book gets a mention at some stage and I think it was just the beginning of what is happening now as JSOC began its life in Iraq & Afghanistan. Now they are responsible for assassinations from drone attacks, covert ops, and even employing local forces to do their dirty work in over 70 countries around the world according to the doco. President Obama is right behind these actions too. Like I said it's chilling.

Looks like I'm the only one contributing to this thread lately

Anyway come across a beauty for you zombie lovers out there. Do you want to find out where zombies as we know them today came from in the horror genre? It was Romero's 1968 "Night of the Living Dead" that created what you see today in shows like The Walking Dead and countless movies.

This documentary Birth of the Living Dead takes us back to how it all happened, why this film was ground breaking horror, and puts it into a social context of the 60's as well. Interviews with many including a producer from The Walking Dead, and Romero himself. If you like the zombie genre then you'll get a kick out of this.

*Note: I have come across this on a private torrent site so I cannot guarantee you'll find it on a public one yet.

A series of documentaries called 'Breakout' by NatGeo, with each episode going over a different successful prison escape (mainly from the US). It's really well done and I recommend for any crime buffs.

All eps are up on YouTube.

Watching the three part Jared Diamond documentary 'Guns, Germs and Steel'. Could do without the ridiculous music over the dramatised scenes but.
