Are the tweaks really that slight though? JUH, Weightman and Treloar are potentially done at the Dogs (granted I'm perhaps jumping the gun on Weightman). We've got massive holes in our KPDs. Libba is 34 next year, JJ and Jones both look on their last legs. Etc.

We can fix up our structure, but the list has some fairly substantial gaps.

The list is in a lot of trouble imo

Make no mistake, the margin was a lot closer than it should have been. We were comprehensively beat and lucky that they were historically wasteful.
Yeah, not sure what was honourable about that loss, maybe the last 10 minutes and some efficiency up forward. Brisb are very good. otherwise

82 turnovers to there 68 (we shit ourselves under heat)
44 to their 64 inside 50s
42 to their 60 1% ers

we lasted 1 quarter with matching their high pressure, then rolled over in the second and third quarters. there was not much i liked about that one

I can't remember us dominating inside 50s in any of our losses this year...
I can't remember the exact games but there have been games this year, but it was more a comment on the last few years. It has been a common way we've lost - dominate clearances and territory but lose to better ball movement and forward efficiency.
I feel like we're trying to play that way with our aggressive running with the ball but we don't have the ball users to support it.

Take a look through the alternatives.

It's the tired and tried of Duryea, Khamis or Coffield. Or its the untried of Walker, Sellwood of Jaques.

Some choice. eh?

One thing is certain. We cannot carry his one way game much longer.

Bailey Dale is the only good half back we currently have.

Tim English being your ruck to try and win/influence a must-win center bounce with a minute to go is...incredibly uninspiring.

We basically gambled the game on our notoriously uncompetitive ruck decisively winning that clearance against an old brute, it was over when our mids collectively overran it.

Would have been better with Darcy in there, but then you're obviously robbing Peter, paying Paul etc, with the forward line in this 6-6-6 era.
I thought English was poor most of the night. But I also think that most nights, so what would I know?

We’ve got several more years of being exposed at throw ins.

I think our top end talent is fine, and that's the hardest part to fix.
Tweaks in the sense we need better depth and back end. Some of that may come through natural development.
Although I'd want to be targeting a few Kennedy types in areas we lack. Dependable best 22 who won't cost the earth.

Sanders was putting together a season before being moved to the wing, and then bizarrely defense tonight.
I think he was given a run with role on one of the Ashcrofts and just found himself there A LOT!

When he did he got completely exposed and looked disinterested in putting any sort of pressure or going near his opponent and was led to the ball all night.

If there was a viable alternative and we weren't already carrying the likes of McNeil. Vandermeer and Garcia. Id be inclined to send him down to work on his defensive game at Footscray for a spell.

We have much less reliance on old blokes than the main contenders. Libba about our only important one who is close to the end, but that’s probably the one area we have depth in.

Secure Butters, get a key back and work on defence.

Frustrating season, but I think we’re a year away irrespective.

I don’t like the word “fraud”, but I agree for such a high pick he’s not shown anything to warrant that type of draft capital. Some of his htb seems like he’s never played senior footy before, his disposal is average at best.
I think he is actually a decent kick, I just don’t think he does it enough. What worries me is his lack of urgency and his unwillingness to compete at 100% in the contest on a consistent basis. His defensive attributes are not great, loses his man constantly around a ruck dual

This was probably the first confirmation game where I thought he doesn't quite have it for finals, wet conditions often do that. He tried hard and it's not sad, more of a nod for the champion of the club he has been. That said I 100% hope he proves me wrong the champ.

Too end talent is very good (you can say the same for Carlton too) but should/could be better given we have multiple recent first round picks not playing - Weightman, JUH, Busslinger, Croft. Those picks fell within relatively short succession, on top of Smith leaving, meaning a hole quickly opens up. Not to mention the effect of the Darcy and JUH bids on our depth.

Sanders and Darcy were our only first round draft picks taken since 2017 to be playing tonight...

Can anyone explain why Sanders and Davidson have been moved from their best position? Actually felt sorry for Sanders being badly exposed in defence.
Bevo is the AFL’s version of the tinker man. Some things will work and look amazing, others won’t. They can’t stop themselves from experimenting, high ceiling/low floor individuals.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudio_Ranieri

They both won an improbable title in 2016. Will dine out on it forever, regardless of other achievements.

Remaining games:

Essendon: they’re below us on the ladder, extremely average, have about 500 injuries - will easily win.

GWS - Good recent record against them, but they’re back in form. 50/50 game.

Melbourne - Should win but a potential danger game.

Eagles - We should be relegated if we don’t nail them.

Freo - Potential 50/50. Id back us given it’s at Marvel, but still danger game

So we play 1.5 finals teams and 3 average sides.

Probably still make the finals, but think everyone is over sneaking into the bottom half.

These past two weeks were a chance to get the Top 4 spot and we’ve failed.

Selwood and Jacques to be given a chance. Whether that’s back or on the wing. We want to see guys how are willing to physically complete. We need some enthusiasm in the side! Davidson, not sold on, first year, great when we are winning but average when we struggle. Main concern is his lack of physical presence when the chips are down!

Watching every week, there is no gameplane i genuinely believe that he doesn’t have one, there is no fluency in any games all year there is no structure what so ever, we get scored against the exact same way, do we not teach our players where to position, like hey in a defensive 50 stoppage don’t be boundary side maybe stand goal side of your opponent, don’t give them 5 meters of space, unless we go again for a whole bunch of new assistants this isn’t changing, and we are in so much trouble, aging stars and not much coming through, lose JUH there’s 5 years wasted of development that turns into a nothing pick, we could be in for a very long rebuild if this sh*t continues under his watch.
Could potentially finish 10-12 this year absolutely disgusting

That's all well and good to declare and type out. But How is that going to work? Any rumblings of disgruntled contest players looking for a move? They pretty much have to be dirt cheap with upside for decent development.
We couldn't even land Barrass with a head start on the competition.

Butters will have to wait. Don't have enough capital to inspire Port to pick up the phone at this time.

when English gets beat we struggle, he was passive again tonight

Davidson needs to build core strength

we get nothing out of our sub most weeks (Poulter 1 possession)

Williams had a mare (he needs to lift his performance floor)

Freijah almost needs a rest or week in the 2s

we have group of players who zone as instinct and too often dont go hard when they need to, Freijah, sanders, JOD et al

I’m not sure if it’s a talent/player issue or a development one, but he’s not performing at a level I’d expect from a high draft pick in a good team.

Sanders and Freijah show no urgency defensively, and that’s a cultural problem rather than a player problem.

Bevo can focus on forward half defense as much as he wants, but neglecting what happens when it gets out has killed this team for years and remains a problem. The young kids who look great going forward need to lock in defensively, but I won’t hold my breath because nobody else is really doing it.

Umpire throw ins have trended towards being short for the better part of 5 years but Tim always ends up behind his man. So frustrating. Also Tim rucking a ball up 20m from our goal makes no sense, go behind the ball for a dump kick and let Sam take them.
