To clarify, IDGAF, the dislike that some, not all, supporters have towards Richmond stems more from the Knights-Campbell and Libba issue than the recruitment of Brown and Wallace. Those two are the target for invective in their own right, not your club although the gloating by some Richmond supporters last year over Brown didn’t help. If Bowden leaves, supporters will feel disappointed and he’ll cop cat-calls next year, just as Penny does. Anyway a bit of healthy hatred between clubs is good for marketing.

Anyway, if you do get him then you'll do well out of him if you can get him to work a bit harder and focus more. He's a talented lad, a strong mark with suspect kicking but the consensus is that he is lazy.

Persoanlly, I certainly bear him no malice: I actually felt very sorry for him when he was later screwed out of the captaincy by the real villan of the piece, lying scumbag Campbell. This weak individual did not see the incident (as he stated for all to hear on 3AW straight after the game), but who lied at the tribunal to ensure that Libba got the maximum sentence. Not to mention his gutless playing style that avoids all forms of bodily contact (which most Richmond supporters I know agree with wholeheartedly). He is the enemy in all of this, and is the prime target of my personal vitriol. As Richmond supporters, you should be disgusted by the previous administration who appointed him as your captain after he walked out on the club previously, and always held the club to ransom at contract negotiation time. A very ordinary individual IMO.

I didnt see Campbell but I saw the incident, I was in the AFL members and was watching Knights directing traffic in the forward line (he was standing just in the centre square) when that wannabe midget hit him as soon as he turned around. I believe Campbell said exactly that to the media. He didnt get it to far wrong.

I dont usually get agitated, but this incident lights my rage, because I saw it all, and when dipsticks like you my friend comes and degrades a Richmond person, well thats the iceing on the cake!!

Hope the Bulldogs do well next year, and gets over all the incidents that Richmond have done to them especcially the Nathan Brown stuff, and we all become successful for the benefit of this great game.

And like any good psychotherapy session, I feel it is important to briefly delve into what appears to be the protected unconscious of the Bulldog supporter mind - confront this aggresive denial that appears to have become dominant.

Firstly, you're right, Knighter is and always was the innocent party in all of this. But you are very wrong that he has not ever been vilified by the Western Bulldog crowd. Such is the confused nature of the Doggie mind,they appear to have collectively associated Knighters passive role in the whole matter with both the tribunal decision and,perhaps, the violent act itself!

Secondly, that interview with Campbell on 3AW after that match was replayed ad nauseum in the week after the hit, and if you could not perceive his repsonse as simply being an automatic reflexive 'footballer's answer' when put under the pump immediately after a game, then you're probably just as likely to believe that coaches do indeed "just take it one week at a time", or that footballers really only believe "individual achievements mean nothing" and that they'd "swap it all for a premiership".

Thirdly, whether you agree that footballers should "break the players code" at tribunal hearings or not, Wayne Campbell obviously thought that on this particular occasion it was warranted. Maybe that should be seen as more of a reflection of how opposition players viewed the antics of Tony Liberatore - that they "dob" him in but not anyone else - than those who actually spilled the beans on his violence.

Finally, odd how you chose to pay homage to the testimony of Wayne Campbell on radio post-match, but also chose to ignore the many callers - Richmond supporters and otherwise - who'd witnessed the incident itself and subsequently phoned in during that post-game summary to unanimously condemn the act as an unprovoked, off-the-ball, behind-the-play, callous act of thuggery and cowardice on behalf of the true culprit here - Tony Liberatore.

Ghost, I enjoyed your thoughtful reply, but just a couple of points that need clarification.

I only said that most Dogs supporter I know, not Dogs supporters in general. I know that Knights has been booed from pillar to post by dopey Dogs supporters who fail to see that Knights did not provoke the situation on the field or at the tribunal. I agree with you; it's akin to Americans being conditioned by the Bush administration to believe that Saddam Hussein was directly involved in 9/11! Sad really.

Secondly, Libba is also a villain in this piece, for he treaded a very fine line for a few seasons. One thing he never, ever did on the field prior to that day was king hit a player behind the play. Debatable that he did in this occasion either. I've heard too many conflicting opinions from "expert witnesses" on both sides that are in complete contradiction. I didn't see it, so it's entirely possible that Libba did deck him deliberately, but it would have been completely out of character. Perhaps your new coach, who personally instructed a 10 year fair ball player to drastically change his style of play to survive in his later years, might also have something to do with the incident??

Thirdly, the only real reason for the uproar was a) Libertore was involved and b) the claret spilling from Knighter's head. Not 7 days earlier, Paul Licuria was knocked unconscious 100 metres behind the play by Aaron Lord. Not blood spillage, but that was a far worse incident with greater ramifications for the victim. Funny how barely a word was spoken about this incident. Maybe if Lord was a scragging annoying little wog with a couple of priors, I dare say he would have faced even more hot water than Liberatore.

Finally, there were just as many Bulldog supporters ringing up saying they saw the incident, and it was accidental contact. I pay no attention to these callers and I pay no attention to the Richmond callers either. As for Campbell post match, I actually think it would be easier to tell the truth immediately after the event than to spend 5 days putting together a good story for the tribunal. It's only my opinion, but it just seems too convenient to use the "conditioned footballer response" argument.

On a side note, I think it's great that Richmond and the Bulldogs have developed a bitter rivalry. Just think how much it will hurt to lose to the Dogs in round 3 next season. I know I will hate it more than any other loss if it happens. Long live the rivalry!

I don't believe for A SECOND that you give a rats about Campbell's contract negotiations so let's strike that one off.

Campbell goes in for hard balls frequently so there's the next lie out of the way.

I know for a fact that Campbell told the truth to the tribunal.

Yes, many Richmond supporters hate Frawley for his treatment of Knighter.

Ditto on your opening line, Sedat ... thanks for the well thought out response. I really appreciate an opposition poster - especially an opposition poster - who is prepared to go to the effort on putting together a reply ...

It's amazing how much of an impact our personal subjectivity on such matters influences what we selectively hear and read about the incident, and our lasting perceptions too ... I reckon we're as close to middle ground on this as we'll ever be, so let's just put our own views down to our respective love of our footy clubs and the unashamed bias that naturally accompanies this. If I could be so presumptuous to call it a draw.

And yes, it is great to build such rivalries - I put down much of Essendon's success over the past decade particularly to Sheedy's uncanny ability to contrive rivalries against just about every other team in the comp (Collingwood - Anzac Day, North - marshmallows, West Coast - scarf-waving etc)... ensuring that each match becomes a drawcard (and hence a money-raker!) for his club, as well as hardening his players for big contests.

At the same time, I reserve the right to barrack for the Doggies in the finals if you guys make it and we don't.
