I've backed him and I think Lyon has gone about it right way so far in trying to get our ultimate goal but we of course have unfortunately not been quite good enough and fallen short. But next year we just have to bring in new people and try something different, repeating something similar to what we did this year again will never catch Hawthorn now, if he does this I will lose all confidence in the man.

You know I read these boards a lot these days without really ever feeling the desire to post and I have to say I don't usually find myself agreeing with your sentiments...until now. Maybe I'm a little too deflated over bowing out how we did, maybe I'm just reverting back to my pessimistic self but to me it just comes across as being a strange mix of being hollow with a hint of desperation. Not the most comforting address

I completely disagree.

I saw a committed, passionate, professional coach, with very high standards, publicly admitting that he himself had fallen short as much as anyone.

That's not hollow or desperate - but human and fallible.

Most importantly, I saw that going all the way is something that still really matters to him, and he is aware of the cost that has on his loved ones.

Ross like everyone has only finite mental and emotional resources to draw on - and great achievement in one area by an individual invariably means poor achievement somewhere else.

I suspect its sometimes his family that pays the price for that dedication. Not having anything substantial to show for dedication like that is a very difficult thing to face. That speech suggests to me his family stand by him regardless of that failure, and are willing to do so again.

Nothing in that speech is even remotely inconsequential to my eyes. If Freo win the flag next year, you can bet it will only happen thanks to the support and faith of Ross' family.
