Doom

I remember playing Doom on my 286/386 many years ago, and the many hours I put into Quake and Quake 2......... I've only played it for a few drunken minutes so far but it seem to have that same awesome arcadey feel that the previous titles had. I'll check it out more over the weekend but it seems like a decent title so far.

Pity my PC can't handle anything more than medium graphics though :(

I really want to get into this but patiently waiting for some critic review or feedback on here just to be safe.

I loved the older titles and really enjoyed Doom 3 too, even with the slower paced horror route it took.

I haven't played a decent arcade style shooter since UT2004 and before that...probably the first Unreal Tournament.

Picked it up from Big W for $69 after reading the fairly positive first impressions so far from around the place.

Don't really care if MP isn't any good as I've never really known Doom to be an MP game anyway, all about the SP!

Will give it a go once I've finished Uncharted 4.

I posted this on the Port Adelaide board so i'll post it here to:

I picked it up yesterday, It's only problem is the music but I found a fix for that. What you do is just leave the SFX volume up and turn the music volume down in the game and crank some Slayer in the background, fits perfectly.

But seriously, I don't really like FPS games these days but this one stood out to me (probably cos it's called DOOM) you most certainly don't duck and cover in this one you just run out all guns blazing and F*** S*** up. It has a strong focus on melee combat though with chainsaw kills always resulting in ammunition drops and glory kills always resulting in health pack drops.

Not that that's a bad thing though, glory kills are so F***ing satisfying each and every time. I'm only a few hours in and it feels like single player campaign is just getting started. It even has a story to it and yet the players character is even more ambiguous than ever before. I haven't even touched the multiplayer yet.

I'll give it 4.5 frisbees out of a possible 5 frisbees.

Also I love the fact there is no sprint button, because sprinting is the default! That helps the games pacing immensely. My biggest irk with the game though was why do you need to do a 5 gigabyte day one update in order to play online? that sucks.

Game is ****ing awesome, I've put more time into it than Uncharted 4 so far and any game that can pry me away from that is doing something right.

This is what Doom 3 should've been. Don't get me wrong, Doom 3 is a good game but this feels so much like the classics with it's fast and fluid pace and non linear map design packed with secrets.

Returning to the old school roots of FPS gameplay and map design feels fresh after the last decade of linear designed corridor shooters. I keep trying to reload though, even after a few hours I'm still hitting square every now and then :drunk:

Can see a lot of replay value in this, it's even got me wanting to pick up the Wolfenstein games again.

Unfortunately multiplayer is still complete arse, thankfully Doom was never known as a multiplayer game for me so I can ignore that and still rate this game a solid 9/10. The industry, not so much Nintendo, needs to take note and go back to making "games" again, simple and rewarding gameplay that is fun. Too much focus on story and narrative nowadays.

To quote John D. Carmack: Story in a game is like a story in a pr0n movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important.

I picked up the chainsaw early on, and went to put it away and lost it. I've come across other ones and I'm unable to pick them up. Am I doing something wrong, shouldn't it be on my weapon wheel?

Are you on console or PC?

The Chainsaw is a secondary item and is mapped to the square button on PS4. It does not appear on the weapon wheel, just like the BFG is mapped to triangle button and does not appear on the weapon wheel.

The game does seem to be stingy with petrol tanks for the chainsaw but.
