Truly hairific
It is a dynasty that never gets the acknowledgement it deserves. Without the debacle that played out after the 1979 season, we could easily have won in 1980 as well.
A very good demonstration of how good that team was, given the poor preparation they had throughout much of the season. Poor old Perc had no idea.Round 22 1980 at Princes Park we were leading Fitzroy at 3/4 time by more than 8 goals, in good recent form and aiming to finish on top of the ladder as the tigers were having a bad day v's South Melb at Lakeside oval on the same day. But our season began to collapsed in the last quarter when the royboys started piling on the goals and we just hung on to win by 4 points.
We ended up missing top spot to the Cats by percentage only and then bombed out in straight sets in the finals. I think we copped injuries during the 3rd quarter in the round 22 game.

I understand the club had previously tried to get Parkin, without success. Thank goodness the Hawks fell away for a couple of years or we would never have nabbed him.Fortunately Hawthorn missed the finals 2 seasons in a row and Parkin became available.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I seem to have a vague recall that they had a bash at him after Jezza resigned, but he was still contracted to the Hawks, so knocked back our offer.Did this happen when Big Nick suddenly quit before the '76 season began and the club then settled for assistant Ian Thorogood?
No Sheldon, Perovic or McConville. FMD, Hang your bloody head in shame.I was just looking back earlier and those premiership teams of 79, 81 and 82 had some super bloody footballers in them. I know time fades things and each year the team that wins the GF is the best but damn those teams would stand up well against any comers. Fitzpatrick, Doull, Southby, Johnston, Buckley, Armstrong, Ashman, Keogh, Bosustow, Hunter, Harmes, McKay, Jezza, Austin, Maclure, Maylin, Glascott......
coz I can - the 5 best
