DISCLAIMER: Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
The title of this thread is the bleeding obvious, we have had many a thread on these boards proving that our drafting over the last 5 or so years has been quite poor.
If we had of drafted better between 2002-2006 I believe we would currently be a top 4 side and even a chance of winning the flag on a good day out. Here is some interesting facts that im sure will cause debate amongst fellow BF posters.
2002 DRAFT:
We pick up Daniel Bell (14) Nick Smith (15) Jared Rivers (26) Gary Moorcroft (39) Cameron Hunter (54) and Ryan Ferguson (66) makes up the draft.
We elevated Mark Jamar to the list that year so to use pick 15 on a ruckman when we had 2 greats in White and Jolly and upgraded Jamar is beyond me.
Daniel Bell has no awareness and is far to slow. Moorcroft Hunter and Ferguson were duds. Jared rivers was the best selection of this draft 2004 rising star but a horrible run with injuries have hampered him, he still plays a part in the dees Succes.
Pick 14 we could have used on Troy Selwood who went at Pick 19, Pick 15 on Stephen Gilham, 26 on Riv, 39 on Tim Boyle, 54 on Ryan Crowley and a packet of twisties for pick 66.
SUMMARY OF 2002- Defenders in Gilham/Riv, Mids in Selwood/Crowley and a potential KPF replacement for Neitz in Tim Boyle.
2003 DRAFT:
Traded Pick 21 for Ben Holland, Pass on 52 and pick Phil Read in the PSD. Sylvia at 3 McLean at 5 and Chris Johnson at 36 round out our draft.
Sylvia and Mclean were very good choices, its funny how with a full pre-season Col as been our most improved player and Brock dropping back a bit with a limited one. Both are part of melbournes future.
We all know what happened with CJ but he was a waste of a pick (not even half the player his dad. Should have gone with Jed Adcock at 21 who went at 33 Ricky Dyson (44) and used 52 on Andrew Raines (76) instead of a spud like Phil Read in the PSD.
SUMMARY OF 2003: 2 HFS/MID 1 inside MID 1 Back Pocket and 1 Half Back Flanker.
2004 DRAFT:
Pick 12 from thomspon trade gets us Moloney, Matthew Bate (13) Lyden Dunn (15) from trading Jolly to Sydney and Michael Newton (43). Aaron Davey was a rookie elevation this year.
Moloney although a good player, was not worthy of Pick 12 and why in gods name would you use your next 3 picks on KPF/HFF?
Pick 12 should have picked up Jarred Moore who was touted a potential number 1 draft pick but went at pick 31, Bate still at 13, Dean Polo at 15 who went at 20 and Justin Sherman at 43 (45).
SUMMARY OF 2004: 1 FP 1 KPF 1 HBF 1 MID
2005 DRAFT:
Lose picks 28, 44 and 62 for Byron Pickett but gain 52 (Buckley) and 60 (Bartram) Nathan Jones (12) Heath Neville (68)
I know we wanted that premiership player because the window was "open" but Pickett was not the man, we gave away too much to get a bloke who only played 29 games for us and was to busy drinking then wanting to play. I'm not sold on Jones Disposal for a pick 12 selection and obviously should have kept pick 28,44,62. I like Buckley but now not having pick 52 i don't see him worthy of a lesser pick.
Would like to have seen Beau Muston who averaged 23 disposals 9 contested possessions and 6 hardball gets in the TAC cup at 12, Robert Warnock at 28 who went at 42, Sam Lonergan at 44 (50), Clint Bartram at 62 and pass on 68.
SUMMARY OF 2005: 1 Inside Mid 1 Ruck 1 HFF/Mid 1 Back Pocket.
2006 DRAFT:
James Frawley (12) Ricky Petterd (30) Colin Garland (46) Isack Weetra (62)
Extremely happy with Frawley and Garland, both will be 2 of our best defenders over the next couple of years. You cant question Petters courage but his skills let him down at times. Do I even need to give an explanation on Weetra?
Lock Frawley and Garland in for Picks 12 and 46, Alwyn Davey at 30 (36) and pick 62 on Justin Westhoff (71).
SUMMARY OF 2006: 2 DEFENDERS 1 FP/MID 1 KPF.
POTENTIAL BEST 22 AT RND 1 2009 (NOT INCLUDING 2008 DRAFTEES)
B: McDonald Martin Rivers
HB: Raines Frawley Davey
C: Grimes Morton Selwood
HF: Lonergan Bate Green
FF: Al.Davey Boyle Moore
R: Jamar McLean Muston
INT: R.Warnock Sylvia Garland Bruce
EMRG: Cheney Dyson Polo
