If we can manage to get picks say 5 & 15 from GWS, assuming Carlton give up 5 for a Marchbank deal.

Assuming we get Steele as well.

Who should we take?
McGrath
Scrimshaw

Or

SPS
Tarranto

I don't know I'd upgrade to get any of those guys, after Luggage and Brodie there seems a pretty even bunch up until the teens. Ainsworth and SPS will go in the top 4 would be my guess then it's a pretty even spread and guys some clubs have at 5 could go as late as the early 20s. I would rather have two picks in the 12 to 18 range almost. I'm no expert but I'm a little less excited by this draft for some reason. there doesn't seem to be a great deal of superstar quality about it. SPS looked amazing for along time though so it would be him if he's still there or Ainsworth but I'm not sure we need him.

Neat as in disposal? His kicking is meant to be inconsistent, which, along with his less than ideal height seems to be the main knock on him. If not for those things he'd probably go pick 1 or near enough.
One AFL recruiter had him at number 1. (RTD Podcast)
Yes heard his kicking isn't great probably range 3-8

I like Rotham who surely must be considered along with Taranto and Scrimshaw....
Haven't followed his season since the champs and at that stage I'm not sure he'd done enough to warrant going top 10, but if he's done well over in WA since then he could be with the attributes he's got.

As Tommy Wigs said - probably a late 1st rounder so unless we downgrade probably unlikely I guess

He's the type that might be in the mix if we trade our two first rounders and perhaps something else for an earlier top 10 pick, a later first-rounder and say a Steele.

If we can nab Jack Steele and also keep our first pick for the draft we will have done very well.
Rather than trying to poach from other clubs all the time we should look at developing our own talent as much as possible.
I know Richo wants to recruit ready made players to sure up his contract but the club needs to hold firm on this.
Someone like Josh Rotham may be be available at our pick:

POS: Defender, Ht 192cm, Wt 79kg, DOB 25/2/98
From West Perth/Western Australia

The rebounding defender is athletic, quick and can take on the game. Eventually he could settle as a wingman, such is his speed off the mark and willingness to give drive out of the back half. Rotham got a taste of Western Australia's under-18 system last year and although he has not had the breakout top-age year that might have looked possible, he remains a talented option.

Lets be realistic. If the Lions get a PP and then GWS get an Academy pick (Setterfield) our pick might end up more like a pick 12.
Scrimshaw would be ideal if available but if he isnt then we are looking at Taranto or Rotham.

Having said that I reckon the Lions will get a PP but at the start of the 2nd round so more like a pick 21. Which leaves us with pick 11.

I don't think Richardson is worried about his contract just about building the best team.
Trade/draft decisions are not up to him after the Lyon and Watters disasters he only has input.
Also don't we have enough rebounding defenders already

The worry isn't the academy kids pushing our picks back, as those academy kids won't effect who is still available to us at our pick. The worry is GC & GWS getting 'free hits' at their own picks, ie: if it comes to their pick & no club has made a bid on their academy guys, then they could use their pick on SPS, McGrath, Ainsworth, Scrimshaw & completely **** everyone over.

Don't really care how many academy kids are selected before our pick as we don't have access to them anyway so it doesn't change who is available for us to take. The more acady kids taken before our pick, the better, as it uses up their points & brings our later picks further in

I didnt mean it in a critical way.
Just as a general comment about having some separation between recruiting and coaching.
Nothing personal at all re Richo. I just think as a general principle there needs to be some separation.
Nothing at all against Richo. Just saying it is human nature and we need to account for it.

Of course the Academy kids will affect who is available at our pick.
e.g Lets say Port nominate Setterfield at pick 9. GWS have the opportunity to take him using points. So he is drafted at 9. Then Port get next pick before us.

Look at last year - Mills, Kennedy, Hipwood and Hopper were taken before our pick. We had pick 14 but Gresham was the 18th player selected.

That is how the draft works.

If we trade anywhere near as much as people on these threads think, we won't get many good draft picks. That means we will either be drafting very late picks ( de-listed players?) or elevating rookies and taking on new rookies.
What prospects are there for late picks and Rookies?

So again, seeing as Setterfield is an academy boy, how has GWS jumping in front of Port taken away who would have been available for us?

- Port bid on Setterfield at pick 9,
- GWS match it & take him at pick 9,
- Port then take Taranto at pick 10 who they could have taken anyway at pick 9,
- We then move from pick 10 to pick 11 which hasn't effected those of the non-academy players are still available to us.

Hypothetically, Essendon could bid on Bowes, Setterfield, Perryman, Macreadie, Sproule with pick 1 with all bids matched (if the academy clubs desired of course) & still take Brodie or McCluggage at pick 6.

Hasn't changed which of the non-academy players would still be available to us at our pick, which would now be pick 16.
