If I ever want to see whether my tear ducts are working, I look at this list. However, it seems there are a few gaps, so any additional info would be appreciated. Birss should be in there somewhere, and maybe the rookie list is not exhaustive?

Port traded pick 4 in the 2000 draft for Wakelin? I didn't realise he was worth that much back then.

Yep one of the widely held myths was that we gave up both Wakelins for nothing. Darryl got us Hamill & Shane had golden staff & looked like never playing again. The Pies took a chance & great coaching turned him into a player he never was close to at St.Kilda.

1999
Round Pick Player
1 9 Cayden Beetham
2 24 Jason Blake
3 39 Justin Plapp (pick traded to Richmond)
4 54 Murray Pitts
5 68 Tony Delaney
Rookies Davis, Gowans

Wow, that looks really painful.

That is F#$%ing painful to read.

I can't even remember Cayden Beetham... Did he do anything?

Other suicidal tendancy increasing picks:
1 Pick 17 traded for Fergus Watts
All of 2004
1 8 Raphael Clarke
1 6 1st round pick traded for Barry Brooks (pick received for Everitt)
3 31 3rd round pick traded for Barry Brooks

I am willing to forgive misses on a lot of lower picks, altho really with the 1000 odd players that nominate for each years draft I am sure there was better players available than some of the garbage we have picked up.

Picks saving my wrists from total annihilation are:
Gram, S Fish and S Gilbert - good later picks.

Not particularly good considering the quality of some of the picks (high 1st round)

No point labelling a pick as a miss if you don't take into consideration what else was available at that pick. I think given our the circumstances at the time, some (by no means all) of these so called "misses" were the best on offer at the time.

Birss was essentially a freebie. We traded our fourth round pick (59) to the Bulldogs for him, they then traded it to West Coast (I think as part of the McDougall trade) and they then traded it back to us with Michael Gardiner for pick 43

It's funny that some of our player's like Monty and Sam Fisher were picked very late. Many of the clubs passed on the round before we picked up Sam.
It is so hit or miss we need to make sure we get a full draft of fresh players.
Instead we - Redraft McQualter and Gehrig, how is that working out for us.
I can't complain about the King trade though.

Should Guerra count as a "miss"

Shows how vital it is to keep the young blood pumping through the heart of the club. As everyone knows 2004 and 2005 were our years to take the flag, two years to have a go at a flag isn't long enough. We could have had an extra 1-2 years to snatch that elusive flag if we drafted better than we did in 04 and 05. I'm afraid we are paying the price now. :(

On the upside i think we have some beauties coming through,

McEvoy, Allen, Armitage, Steven, Geary :thumbsu::)

Hey, I've never understood how a draft finishes.

I know teams end up having to pass if they wanna take rookies or have too many people on their list, but if you got rid of enough players could you just like use picks 80-120? Had no idea why we didnt just like take Gaertner or Gourdis with picks after 70 odd..

Do rookies count towards salary cap/cap of 40 players?

List is 38 players plus a maximum of 6 rookies at a fairly minimal rate of pay ($25-30k?). The saints decided to save a buck by not having any/many rookies at times and this has hurt us list-wise now. If we accept that drafting is a punt and you have late developers, and that some great players have come from rookie lists (such as Dean Cox), then we stuffed up.

Snippet out of the age

Player manager Ricky Nixon will this morning meet officials from Geelong, St Kilda, Richmond, North Melbourne and Brisbane Lions, who have paid $30,000 each to be the inaugural member clubs in what is essentially a national Irish recruiting scheme.

Nixon hopes their reward will be almost immediate.

"I'm pretty determined to get each of our original member clubs a good player in the first 12 months; I'm committed to that," Nixon said yesterday.
Seems we are putting more money into recruiting:thumbsu:

I can't even remember Cayden Beetham... Did he do anything?

Played 37 games. Had some ability but seemed lazy and ended up walking away from the club.

Never forget the game against Collingwood where he thought someone was chasing him (he was 35m in the clear), baulked the ghost five times, and then when someone finally did wander over to tackle him he missed the ball with his kick.

The crowd (predominatly one-eyed monsters) laughed.

That is classic! Although would not have been at the time!

SaintsSeptember : It would help if Harvey, Burke & Leowe stop pumping out girls!

Change the rules, stop being sexist , Some of these girls are probably tougher than half our current list.

( I think girls are associated with lower sperm count - did these guys burn up all of their testosterone on the footy field or are they soaking too long in a spa? )

I hope that's $30K well spent, but I can't help but noticing that those with Irish players on their list now, i.e. Sydney, Collingwood and Carlton, are not part of this group.
