Ok, just trying to make heads or tales of the Compensation pics and what it means to us.

We get two first round picks for Gaz right?

So say we go into the 2013 Draft having finished last in that season(hypothetically) we then snag 1 & 2 or 1 & 3 as priority picks correct?

So does that mean we can then get picks 1, 3, 7 & 18(assuming 18 teams in the competition).

I am just finding it hard to get my head around, does that mean whenever we use our compensation picks that all the other teams behind where we use the pick get pushed back? Meaning if we use a couple the premiers of the season miss out on a first round pick, or does the first round just get extended?!

Not trying to whinge Hybrid, but there are several other threads on this you know, probs should have put it in there. Anyway...

We get a a first round plus a mid first round.

If we use them this year they have to both be at the end of the first round though, in the 20's, which is crap, so we won't.

If we use them from 2012 onwards, assuming AFL keeps the final 8, then we get a pick after the 10 teams that missed the finals, so pick 11.

The other pick is directly after where our normal pick is. So if we finish 13th, we would normally have pick 4, so we would get 4, 5, and 11.

I think the AFL have or will, get rid of priority picks, so even if we finished last, it would be 1, 2 and 11, rather than 1, 2, 3 and 11.

Sorry, I couldnt find anything specific to what I was after.

Ok, I understand now.
So for instance, if we finish last, from 2010 onwards, we would get picks 1,2 & 11?

So what happens to the other teams in that draft, say the premiership team, with the introduction of 2 extra picks that wouldnt normally be there? Would they just get pushed out of the first round or does the first round get extended?

Depends on how many other clubs nominate to use their compo picks in a given year. End of first round picks (i.e. Harbrow and Rischitelli) by definition are AFTER the first round picks of every club, so they don't affect the preimership team. But our picks, as they are inside the first round, would push everyone else's down.

Ahh ok, got it. Yeah I couldnt figure out if the other teams above the picks we used lost out or not. Thanks for that!!

Oh well, we should wait till the GC win the cup then use the picks to screw them back :)

The guts of your query is the reason I think the AFL have erred in their compensation formula.Every team gets effected and put back because extra picks are inserted into the draft. If GC signed their full allotment and then all teams decide to use them in one year it would have been an almighty mess. Then due the introduction of a second team means that teams like us who loose the best quality players cant get fair comp till min 2 years later.

My preference would have been that GC picks given to them in overwhelming numbers should have been used as comp. even if that meant more picks at the start for GC. GWS have in fact 4 picks/players that must be traded , I would have preferred a system like that.

I doubt anyone would deny that Ablett would be top compensation , the AFL have said he is worth 2 R1 picks well GC have 1,2,3,5,7,9,11,13,15. Give us P3 and P11 this year ,it would have been far cleaner/fairer to us and probably all other clubs if they happen to be pushed back.
