2 of the spots will go to Evans & Walley.
See I don't get why we would just automatically give our rookie spots to those guys just because they are our NGAs. Unless they are projected to be better players than others we could take a punt on, I would rather roll the dice on some other diamonds in the rough. Evans has looked exciting so sure maybe sign him up, but I haven't heard anything about Walley that sounds interesting except for his name.

Just my last bit on Swadling. I compared him a little to Warner in his draft year and no one really has picked up on it yet.

Similar numbers, both dominant in the colts, both a little quieter in the state games. Both viewed as third round prospects due to a lack of pace and kicking ability.

Rookie me haven’t done Swadlings player profile yet but it will read pretty similar to this but with better stats.

Man if we could snag a Chad Warner type player in the 3rd that'd be amazing

Plus Swadling was played out of position in the state games, and still made AA as one of WA’s most consistent players.

Rated harshly by many due to dominating wafl colts instead of Coates league.

We only have 4 main list spots available atm, so we can't draft anymore than that including matched bids. If noone bids on Banfield & Williams etc, then it's all good, but there's no way to be sure if they will be. So better to be safe than sorry.

Clarke said last week we have 5 main list spots and that we would use a minimum of 4 draft picks

Since then Cal Twomey has written that we intend to use only 4 picks and Duffield said this morning we have 4 spots but I’ve no idea where he got that information from

Right now it’s unclear whether we have 4 or 5 or even if the club wants/needs 5 but the only specific mention of how many spots we have is Clarke saying we have 5

I’m not saying he’s the next Warner I’m simply saying there are some really close comparisons in terms of how there seasons and rankings have gone in there draft year.

A player that we get in the third round or late second that becomes a star is exactly the type of luck or good recruitment we need currently.

The kid absolutely works his arse off, which is half way to becoming an AFL player, can you get him to speak to Barnett.

If Brock or McCarthy remains as rookie in 2026, we should have 5 picks in the main draft. (Probably, we can have 6 if we delist and rookie redraft Cripps)

Suspicious Kenan Thompson GIF
The draft/recruitment team - Allan, Shanahan, Gross, Grego, Davis was a v good haul with the picks we had.

Certainly some comparisons to Warner based on that but he reminds me more of Simon Black in the way he moves, his quick hands and his evasiveness around the contest. Black went at pick 31, and that haunted the club for many years thereafter. I think Black was an elite distance runner, I’m not sure of Swadling’s athletic capabilities.

With the sheer numbers he’s putting up I expect he has some good distance running numbers.

Looking at Draftguru we have seven currently empty spots on the main list and six rookies. It sounds like we have to upgrade two of the rookies - Maric and Dewar - so we'd have five available main list spots (1,2,13 and two others) and four rookies (out of 10 including 2xCatB).

This includes Cripps as still on the main list and Livingston still on the rookie list, and the additions of Young and Starcevich (but not Dev as we haven't actually brought him on yet). I can't see why Cripps wouldn't be on the rookie list next year though and maybe Barnett.

I'm guessing that the strategy might be to take four draft picks, and then a combo of these things to fill the main list, in order that we'd want to do them:
  • Match any bids we want to match (up to two).
  • Upgrade one or more existing rookies (Hutchinson probably as he has the longer contract).
  • Put Dev on as a DFA on the main list (but if we don't have the spot, as a rookie via SSP)
Then we fill the rookie list:
  • Cripps if demoted (and maybe Barnett?)
  • Other NGA/FS players who don't get taken in ND
  • Dev via SSP if not taken as a DFA
  • A mega SSP period to fill the rest from the list of players we've talked to.
One of the challenging choices will be if a bid comes before an open draft player we have an eye on. If that happens, and we'd prefer the player on the open list (say Swadling), then we'd have to either pass on the NGA, and hope that the player we want remains available -or- just cut the losses and take the player we absolutely can have (bird in hand stuff)

It's understandable that apart from Duursma at 1, the club is still undecided on who to go for with pick 2.

Atm, I'll give it 60/40 we'll take CDT but that could change.

Feel like that's the first time we've actually been linked to Sharp, if the narrative begins to change into next month, it'll be a 50/50 toss up between the two prospects.

Nah developing a successful, winning mentality with the development squad is pretty important IMO. If the WAFL didn't saddle us with ammo top ups it would be a different story.
Wafc has given the Beagles enough salary cap and points to recruit decent players.
Even Perth were able to recruit some decent former Afl players in the last couple of years and they have been a basket case.

Good to hear we have been "strongly linked" to Sharp

Will be really interesting to see which way our recruiters go with pick 2 if we do keep it

I am about 95% confident we will be walking away with Duursma, CDT and Farrow from the first round.

5 spots sounds right as Dewar has spent 3 years on the rookie list, while Maric has been on it for 2.5 years, so both need to be upgraded. We can draft up to 5 players including matched bids. If more than 2 are bid on, we won't be able to match one of them. Delisting Cripps and/or Barnett gives us the flexibility to match up to 3 bids and the possibility of drafting 4-5 other players rather than just 3.
