Do we need someone in there specifically to fish the ball out to these guys every time?
Harley is more than capable of getting it himself(imo hes VERY good at it), Hewett seems capable, Duursma we hope will be capable, Gross/whoever else will be capable.
As a sum of all midfielders we would have it covered, do we really need a specialist? makes us predictable and can slow the midfield down

Im not saying to neglect this role, but why cant someone like Graham/Allan(?)/whoever do it? Do we need this player to be at every centre clearance or can they be someone who starts off hff and rolls up to defend a specific oppo mid?

Could we try to ensure Allan is this player for us long term? Bo has less midfield craft than Sharp but does he need it doing a defensive role? More useful than Sharp in transition or on attack too

See comment above

Ive used Sydney and Geelong midfields as examples a few times now.
Sydney have Rowbottom doing defensive work (a B grade role player) and then a bunch of more attacking mids Heeney/Warner/Gulden/etc. Imo Sydneys midfield mix is something we should model off, but we have bigger bodied mids than they do.
Geelong have role player defensive mids, at times running multiple tags in the midfield with the sole intention of getting the ball to Smith or Holmes so they can run with it.

Geelongs midfield worked very well this year and Sydney had some injury issues this year, but their midfield in 2024 carried them to a grand final.

No A-grade players like Sharp in those teams, so why do we NEED a player like him?(like the majority of this board seems to think)
Or are we ok picking Sharp at pick 2 expecting him to be a B-grade defensive mid/extractor like Rowbottom/Atkins?
Not having a dig at you. Different opinions are good but I’m a bit confused.

You rate Dunkley so highly and project that’s what Sharp turns out to be all things going well but you think that’s unlikely. Yet in the same breath you are projecting out a pretty optimistic view of our current midfield and other potential draftees.

Take Reid out as he’s a bonafied superstar. I’m not sure we’re as set in the middle as you say. There’s question marks on every player.

Hewett - I’m optimistic of but he has a lot of work to do. Fumbles too often at the coal face.
Gross - first year player shown signs but by no means a sure thing
Allan - has the agility but the knock on him in His draft year was midfield craft.
McCarthy - looks to be a gun and the surest thing of the lot other than Reid.
Hall - first year player. Showed signs but also limitations. Still question marks long term
Hough - could be a solid Dunkley-esque midfielder. Jury still out as a mid but obviously not spot in the team.
Robertson - done it at VFL level never really at AFL level. Time to show it.

Then there’s the seasoned guys.
Kelly - old and unmotivated at times
Graham - good workhorse but for how long.
Yeo - pretty much planning his funeral. RIP

Whilst we are debating whether we take Sharp or CDT at 2 I think there is one very important thing to look at, CDT wouldn't last to our pick 13, Sharp could and I wouldn't be shocked if he was available.

Not to sure now that a trade of picks will happen, we didn't get the offers we were hoping for, we don't want to trade pick 1 and really the chance to do a trade would have likely involved another team. The teams with the most currency to target 2 seems fair happy to hit the draft with what they have.

Get used to the idea that we'll be taking Duursma and CDT and perhaps Sharp at 13.

A draft of

Duursma
CDT
Sharp
Banfield
Williams
With Evans as a rookie

That would address a lot of needs in our list

With Carlton holding 9+11, it will be really difficult to predict what will happen after Dees picks.

I know we all hope Dees will want to trade up. My thinking is it would take 2+13 to get 7+8. Maybe if we are lucky we also get a F3 or a trailing pick as well.

Hall was a second year player in ‘25

I might be off here and maybe it’s the old man hairstyle, but Sharp reminds me a bit of Mundy

The gws recruiter was on gettable during the year. When asked who was the number 1 prospect he said duursma and sharp. Theres no way he lasts till 13 when gws have the pick before us at 12. We would have to trade up from 13

Fox Sports summary on every teams list deficiencies.

I think we already know but just in case everyone thinks we should be prioritising mids and going for tweener project players or half back flankers

WEST COAST EAGLES

List chasm
: Midfield support

To the surprise of no one, Harley Reid can’t do it all himself in the middle of the ground — at least, not this early in his career. The Eagles struggled mightily in the guts without the reliable presence of veteran ball-winner Elliot Yeo — who the club will be hoping can get back on the park next year — and the stark form drop-off of 2019 All-Australian Tim Kelly. The Eagles are expected to sign former Brisbane midfielder Deven Robertson as a delisted free agent in a move that would add a seasoned, ready-made body to an engine room in need of just that. Further, it would shock most pundits if West Coast didn’t stand pat and draft highly-touted ball-winner Willem Duursma — this class’ best prospect — to add to its young midfield brigade. Greater output from the middle portion of the ground is crucial if the Eagles are to improve on their all-time-worst 1-22 campaign.

Cool, so the club recruiter I spoke to said he could be available at 13.

You heard it here folks, we're getting Duursma and Sharp with pick 1, which means we can take a guilt-free swing at CDT with pick 2.

See I don't get why we would just automatically give our rookie spots to those guys just because they are our NGAs. Unless they are projected to be better players than others we could take a punt on, I would rather roll the dice on some other diamonds in the rough. Evans has looked exciting so sure maybe sign him up, but I haven't heard anything about Walley that sounds interesting except for his name.
Totally agree, the NGA's have to earn their spots on the list. We have to pick the very best player available to us at whatever pick we have.

Well, for starters, GWS just traded in Clayton Oliver and already have Tom Green, so I am very doubtful they'd have any interest in Sharp.

2nd, there's plenty of other options at that pick.

Blake Kelly would be this years Chad Warner. Understated inside midfielder who gets out the front of stoppages from the inside, solid turn of speed and good agility. Best transition midfielder from WA after Koby Evans.

Charlie Banfield went past all other WA midfielders after his combine results. 6:05 2km and 8.03 agility run on top of strong back end performances.
Play style yes Kelly is more like Warner but his season hasn’t been as good as what Swadling has put forward. The comparison was the dominant years that Warner and Swadling have had and the fact that both have had similar knocks on there games in there draft year. Not that he plays like him.

The crop has also changed since then, is anyone even rating Sharp in the top five talents now? No one had Robey as a top five chance either. I said it ages ago, the word out of SA was Sharp by the end of the year would not be the top rated SA talent, if Cumming didn't get injured he'd be rated much higher as well.

Time will tell.

Is CDT still a smoke screen? Or are you assuming since we don't have offers for 1 or 2 you think he is no longer a smoke screen...

Or have you gotten word he is no longer a smoke screen?

Spitballing on how Sharp might get to our pick 13. This is ignoring northern academy bids

1. West Coast- Willem Duursma
2. West Coast- Cooper Duff-Tytler
3. Richmond- Sullivan Robey
4. Richmond- Sam Grlj
5. Essendon- Sam Cumming
6. Essendon- Aidan Schubert
7. Melbourne- Xavier Taylor
8. Melbourne- Mitch Marsh
9. Carlton- Harry Dean (used on bid match)
10. Hawthorn- Oliver Greeves
11. Carlton- moved back as part of Dean bid match
12. GWS - Lachy Dovaston
13. West Coast- Dyson Sharp

* Jacob Farrow and Josh Lindsay could be substituted as a player picked before 13
** Carlton’s strategy with picks 9 and 11 will have an impact. If they hold both picks in the draft, their best strategy is to match with pick 9 and have pick 11 slide back 3-4 spots. Alternatively, they could trade one for a future R1 in which case we’d be the best placed team points wise to trade up using 13,34 and a F3 or 41

Not saying that’s how it will play out, only that for Sharp to slide the above needs to happen. Make up your own minds as to how likely that is
