Yep that's the thing. If we're going to pick CDT, it'll be because we think he's the best available player.

Reaching for Sharp over CDT(presuming our recruiters rate CDT higher talent-wise) would indeed be like your scenario of going needs over talent at the point end.
Sharp is the better player now and I don't think it's really all that close. If we pick CDT over Sharp, it's because we think CDT will be better than Sharp in 5-6 years.

I think that while you have talked up CDT, you have hit the exact nail on the head at why so many of us do not want him at 2.

The way the game is evolving, the one thing you would want him to be good at is overhead marking!!
If he can just not get outmarked by oppo ruckmen that will be sufficient. He would more than make up for it once the ball hits the ground, idk if theres a single ruckman in the comp who seems to be as proficient as CDT at ground level.

A bit of balance for those that think Sharp is just purely a slow inside mid.

In the champs he avg 27 possessions and only 11 of those were contested. He actually provided quite a lot of spread on transition including nearly 5 marks a game and 1.3goals a game.
He was also asked to play forward to show some versatility and took some nice overhead marks and kicked goals. Even with time up forward he still avg 6 clearances, 5 tackles and 11 contested possessions.

He releases a lot of players with quick hands on the spread but he's also hungry for the ball and stays involved in transition. I also like that he does all the little things that help at stoppage, like block for players and little knock ons to the advantage of his teammates. Add in his defensive side, leadership qualities and competitiveness and you've got a pretty well-rounded player.

Like Murphy Reid last year people just seem to pick up this narrative that he's too slow when he's football doesn't really suggest this. He may run a bit funny (bit like Swanny) but has no problems making it to contests and finding space in transition.
Funny all the folk in here screaming from the roof top that we shouldve taken reid before Allen are the same ones bemoaning that sharp is too slow and we shouldn't take him.

For those thinking Duursma and CDT will be our picks, how do you rate them top 5 if you include the Academy/F-S players in the draft?

(Thinking bids)

Duursma is a clear 1 and CDT is 4 or 5.

I rate Duursma as the best overall prospect in this draft, better than any Academy/F-S prospect in this draft.

I hated Duursma at the start of the year purely because of the Surname and the Cale Morton comparisons.

Having watched him throughout the year, he's all the good qualities of his brothers combined together with shades of the Bont.

At 193cm, if he can develop his contested game to go with his explosive pace and high IQ, he's likely to become a complete beast of Player.

How many experienced players do people think will come in with the draft/delisted/free agent and SSP period?

1. Appears that Dev Robertson is taking one list spot.
Ted Clohesy has been linked from reports. Obviously other players mentioned as well such as Schoenberg and Fin Mcrae. I wonder how many mature midfielders they intend to bring in. Would it be two

The only one linked to west coast who will be in the national draft will be Blamires so I would love to see the whiteboard of the order which the list management team have for the mature midfielders currently.

e.g. first preference Dev and Blamires, follwed by Dev and Clohesy or Mcrae

And rest of top 5?

Never thought the club would be so stupid to pass on Sharp but here I am. I now have to grill the other talents.

Robby, the “explosive” midfielder who completely shit himself at the combine — God-awful in both endurance and speed testing? Are you serious? He’s played a total of four decent games… against literal kids. He also performed god awful at the NATIONAL CHAMPS

Cummings, supposedly the best talent out of SA, had one good SANFL game against men — one. And he was injured for half the bloody year. He also performed god awful at the NATIONAL CHAMPS

Then there’s CDT — the so-called ruckman standing at 201cm. Even his own fanboys were praying he’d hit 203cm just so they could justify taking him. Only one good vfl games as. FOWARD. He also performed god awful at the NATIONAL CHAMPS.

Let's be real here-
Then you have sharp. The best resume since rowell. With all the expectations on him winning the LARKE Medal. He came in as a heavy favourite and he did it. He also tested top 8 in agility in u16. Played against men ONLY and when he played against kids he completely recked them averaging 30 possesion.

The only thing Sharp hasn't so called won is the combine....
And CDC'S one good game, as a Forward, was Joe the goose 3 goals out the back.

Scintillating stuff.

Maybe we can revolutionise the game and play 6 of these tall, never gonna make it as a ruckman, on the field at the same time. Rotate them through ruck every 2 minutes. Could work, confuse the **** out of the opposition.

You realise there's an art to being able to pull off the Joe the goose move? You beat your opponent back to goal with your ability to read the game and being athletically superior - two extremely valuable traits imo.

I am expecting the 4 additional rookie spots to be DFA
Our normal rookie spots for normal rookieing

Nah that's bullshit. You politely ask your direct opponent if they mind not defending or following you around the 50 arc and then you just put the ball through the two big sticks. Anyone can do it.

Or be a lazy prick letting your defender get loose, then you get lucky with a turnover still standing in the square!

In lower grades, sure. Once in a blue moon in league footy that happens.

When it occurs regularly, it's due to a superior gameplan/matchup. There should be no shame attached to Joe the Goose goals, they're an integral part of all high volume scoring sides. Scoring easily is a feature, not a bug.

Probably, yeah.

In time im sure Duursma will play in the middle but for now half back is an easy spot for him to play, unless we take Farrow or something thats where I expect Duursma to play
Duursma, has all the attributes to be an A grade mid in the modern game in time.

Evasiveness, speed, strength and footy IQ.

I don't think getting outmarked will be an issue. What impressed me about his VFL outing was his ability to get hands to the ball.
