Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Interesting the report that we might bid on Dean. This signals a shift in strategy by our drafting team who, previously, have seemed reluctant to offend. I suspect it’s just a bluff, I wouldn’t be happy if we gave pick 2 for Dean (if Carltin didn’t match).

As others have noted, maybe the ploy is to get Carlton’s first pick. Or maybe it’s tit for tat and Carlton have been sniffing around Banfield and our NGAs.

HUN reporting that West Coast planning a draft bombshell with a bid on Harry Dean with pick 2.

A McGovern replacement. That would take all of pick 9 and push 11 to the second round. Failing that, Cavanagh reporting that Tigers will bid on him.

That could be an interesting discussion.

Blues - what price for 9? We like Harry a lot. So do Tigers.

Option 1.
Trade us 9 for 13 +33
Draft goes
  1. Eagles Duursma
  2. Suns match Uwland
  3. Lions match Annables
  4. Suns match Patterson
  5. Eagles player xxx
  6. Tigers bid on Dean - Blues need 90% of 1,659 =1,493
Option 2
No deal on 9

  1. Eagles Duursma
  2. Eagles bid on Dean - Blues need 90% of 2,481=2,233

Blues either match at 2 or 6. Difference is 740 points.

Is dean worth pick 2 if blues pass?

We are in need of a genuine key defender draftee.

If there isn't much in it, throw a blanket over 2-8 in the draft then why not.

Yep that's the thing. If we're going to pick CDT, it'll be because we think he's the best available player.

Reaching for Sharp over CDT(presuming our recruiters rate CDT higher talent-wise) would indeed be like your scenario of going needs over talent at the point end.
Was Clayton Oliver a reach?
You’re allowing phantom drafts to control the narrative.

Interesting.
Eagles don't leak unless there is something in play, wonder who the leaker is?
Maybe WC have worked out where all the other clubs sit on the talent and want someone to make a play for pick 2 so they can get their desired players close to their ranking of others??
Duursma, ???, Sharp, Cumming.
Can see why they like him but can't see why they would bid at 2 unless it shakes something else out?

Blues could opt not to match?
They could but he’s nearly their perfect fit. Plus if it is a bit of a tactic to move up to 9 the trade would be ideally done before we decided if we do bid or not, Blues don’t really lose out of a trade back if they get points.

Or our team might actually rate him that high

Well yeah you don't want to bid on those not expected to go in the top 5.

F-that start bidding from pick 1 and make them all pay. Pick Duursma with the first live pick (ie 4 or 5).

I don't know why but this just made me kinda wish the recruiting team did go ham with the bids at 1.

After we finally pick Duursma:

Keep the change, ya filthy animals!

Pardon the interruption, I was wondering what you all thought of a trade for richmond to move up to pick 1 would be? Don't think there's much chance it happens but genuinely interested.
You will get a range of responses but for me, it is both 3 and 4 for 1

A club bidding must be very happy to take that player at that pick.

I would happily bid at 2 on Annables, Uwland and Patterson in that order as I would be happy for any of these three players to join Duursma as our top 2.

Personally with Dean, I would not bid that early. But there again, when have the recruiters ever asked or taken my input?

Yep I'd say this is the only offer we couldn't refuse. Even still, I'd be salty about missing out on Willem

I find it very difficult to believe we would be seriously considering Dean at pick 2. This has surely got to be a play to trade up from 13. Dean is a genuine list need, so it makes the threat somewhat plausible. He's not a pick 2 at his height though.

Well for the majority of us here 1 for 5+6 from Essendon would not cut it, and theres no hesitation there.

Youd have to beat that comfortably, and the difference between pick 3 vs 5 is minimal, there are players we could use all through that range

To go to the draft with 2 3 4 and 13 would make me turn my back on Willem.

We would have massive options?
1. Risk CDT then fill needs at 3 4 and 13. If his upside is viewed as high, then OK to take a risk with CDT as the next 2 can offer greater certainty
2. Sell one of 2 3 4 into 2026. Would Melbourne be interested interested since they have 2xR1 next year?
3. Get with Blues and move 13 up to 9 (losing 13 and 33 and not bidding on Dean) leaving us 4 picks inside 9.

I believe the talent this year up until 9 in the open draft is strong. Not outstanding but strong. I see a drop off at 10 which is why I would like to get 9.

Agree, 2 3 & 4 would be amazing and I would do the same but I would still hate to see Willem running around in anything but an Eagles jumper.

Moot point as it will never happen

Interesting picking for the Drug Rats in the mock we are running. I refrained from bidding on Dean at 5 and 6 as my tall option I really wanted was Schubert. IF I was to bid and the bid not matched, I did not want Dean. Hence I let him slip. Melbourne then bid as they could do with a Lever replacement.
