I’d be wanting to explore a shuffle back of 13, 34, and 41 with GC to 15 and 36 providing we get Melbourne’s F2 thrown in and we don’t bid on their boys. Think that’s great value considering they moving ahead of us means we technically only slide 1 pick back in both behind dogs and gws respectively. Keeps us in the hunt for Williams match post-bids as well. No interest in moving 13 up tbh. Don’t want Farrow and can always trade back up if Sharp slides.

So yeah it’s all an exercise to replace what was lost but with 4 extra rookie spots it might not actually matter and you just take best available with the first 4 picks 😂
Maybe we should go after Sultan Kösen ( tallest living man) as a Cat B rookie, could be handy in the ruck at 251cm

Take a step back and look at the cards on the table from a list point of view. Pretty good sign as to who we are taking at pick 2... we won't split unless we get a F1.

By all reports we are taking two mature inside mids as rookies in Dev Rob and one of Macrae/Shoenberg/Clohesy to "help Harley" if you like. With Graham and Yeo (The fit version) and Gross and Hall in the wings, we will have at least six inside mids on the list. Sharp would be seven...

With Livingstone delisted and Barnett likely to get the Tic Tac next year, all indicators are pointing towards drafting best available and taking CDT at 2. No doubt about it!!!
I honestly think the club is trying to get three best picks in this year draft Duursma CDT and Sharp

its just working it out which is the issue

We can find another Sharp far easier than another Duursma (and CDT) , there’s players like Sharp every year. Duursma and CDT types also take longer to develop, makes far more sense to grab them this year and the ready made low ceiling inside mid next year for our timeline.

The odds of Sharp making it at AFL are higher than any ruck. So in that respect you're right because the top end mids tend to succeed at AFL level but CDT development curve when measuring against his peers is unknowable.

When is the draft? It's been too long arguing over the bid order and who we’re taking in the open pool - Duursma, CDT, Sharp, Cumming and the next brigade: Farrow, Dovaston, Lindsay, Schurbert.

Address the midfield.
Aim for three in the top 10.

Do that then we do okay....

But im a greedy campaigner; Aim for four in the top 12 and get a F1 top 10.

If not traded or bundled up today I guess it gets wiped out any way due to only being able to take the same amount of picks as open list spots to the draft?
Might be a deal with bulldogs where they are holding that pick for us until the draft starts and then once it does we have another deal ready to go if we need extra points for a bid

Genuine question for sharp detractors and fans alike; how do his traits compare to Joel Selwood? From what I have seen/read they’re not far apart at each characteristic.

Because if we don't have the list spots that pick will vanish so they have just moved it into next year

I was under the impression picks fell out of the draft once a club has filled their list spots during. So they fall out immediately as soon as the draft starts?

Maybe. I know they have changed the rules around that sort of stuff after the Eagles and Swans found a little looophole in 2018 I think. Not sure about pre draft ect.

Seems weird to be giving that pick away for free when it will have points attached and there were other options.

Duursma is a lanky high talent kid who could start on the wing, build his frame and go on ball and he can break the lines and deliver the footy.
Duff-Tytler agreed, who knows considering he switched from basketball late.
Robey isn't Hutch FFS. He's a half forward mid with a bit of toe who has clean hands, a good leg and a bit of mongrel in the contest who's 5cm taller than your boy Sharp.
Cumming can win a contested ball but can also break from stoppage with pace, has great hands and hits the scoreboard.
Farrow is a natural talent who could start on a wing too and has a laser left foot and a good step in traffic, can also win his own ball.
And yes Twomey does have an idea about football and the draft and has a lot of intel. He's positioned to be the Sharms of the AFL breaking stories and trades. The guys knows which way the clubs are leaning.
Getting hands on the ball is half the battle if you're no threat to the opposition because you've got a shit leg. It's Matt Priddis ball hunting while Shuey cops the tag. Go ahead Pridda, get the ball...

You missed the point.

What you've said about the other players is mostly correct. The problem is the exception being made and weaknesses being exaggerated in the case of Sharp.

Yeah the amount of draft picks you can take into the draft has to be the same as the list spots you have open. So it matches up with us having 5 list spots open.

Other clubs with open spots can carry extra draft picks for you though. It's why you will see a pick swaps at the start of the draft as soon as the first clubs on the clock. Brisbane & GC having been doing it most years

Im not too sure. You might be right. Which makes this trade even more of a head scratcher

I think the loophole was that you could just trade the same pick back to the original club it came from but thats been changed.

You 100% lose the pick before the draft. It's why clubs carry picks for other clubs and then as soon as the draft starts they trade them a heap of picks back for points when you can have more picks than list spots. Its a big loophole

Example of a trade in the 2024 draft when the first team was on the clock.

Greater Western Sydney
Brisbane Lions
to Greater Western Sydney (from Brisbane Lions)

  • pick No. 34
to Brisbane Lions (from Greater Western Sydney)

  • pick No. 37
  • pick No. 56
  • pick No. 73

I’d argue this board does the opposite, a lot of you talk about CDT like he’s a nothing player, the majority of you wanted to trade Willem Duursma away 2 months ago as well.

Meanwhile if anyone addresses concerns about Sharp, they get mobbed by a bunch of people whinging about clearances, as if the only way to win clearances is with a midfield full of bulls, the archetype that teams are willingly getting rid off if they aren’t explosive and don’t run both ways.

So next year we have:
1 first
2 seconds
1 third
2 fourths

And 1/2/13 plus change this year. Lots to play with if we want to move around the top end of the order.

Lots of points to play with for Academy bids also and trading up (Garrison Kenh)

Id completely disagree with this.

No one does that. People talk about the fact that he isn’t an elite ruck in the ways you’d want to see, nor is he a good overhead mark for a KPF. You won’t find anyone debating whether or not he’s a good athlete or has skills. It’s about how those attributes fit his position. I compare him to a blend of Blicavs and Jackson, leaning closer to Blicavs.

To be fair, that was before his VFL performance and finals games.

The only way to win clearance is not with a midfield full of bulls, but you do need A bull, which we don’t have. Teams are willing to get rid of non explosive, downhill skiers yes. Good thing Sharp is not that. He’s a better athlete than the likes of Hobbs and Phillips who he gets compared to by you guys, and he is the best two way player in the top end of the draft by FAR
