Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Thinking if we cant get 9 off Carlton, the best scenario for Eagles is probably that the Dean bid comes late enough that Carlton hold both 9 & 11, use 9 to match Dean and then let 11 slide back (hopefully back past 13). Surely they are going to split both 9 & 11 for additional points if we bid on Dean at 2, meaning those 2 picks will still be live selections ahead of our 13.

If Melbourne like Nairn with one of their picks, and Carlton hold both 9 & 11, there is a great chance we get Dovaston at 13. Schubert probably still there too.

Live selections could look like:

WCE: Duurma
WCE: CDT
Rich: Robey
Rich: X Taylor
Ess: Sharp
Ess: Cumming
Melb: Grlg
Melb: Nairn
Haw: Farrow
GWS: O Taylor
WCE: Dovaston

Duursma at 1, CDT at 3, Dean at 6, Sharp at 8, Cumming at 12 for some players that should impact us

He's hardly any more speculative Farrow. Production at Colts and Champs, lifted in finals and tested better than anyone bar Williams from WA.

Only knock on Charlie is he lacks a single killer trait but he's not dragging around huge weaknesses either. If he was from Caulfield Grammer he'd be blue chip.
He seems a very good player, but every Phantom draft or piece of media I read doesn't have him going before 40.

Now that is likely attributed to being a f/s and perhaps hidden in WA, but my point is more that f/s picks are rarely bid on if they're not considered top talent. History suggests the majority of f/s picks even decent players like Waterman, JDaicos, Silvagni, Burgoyne, Dear etc are either not bid on at all or it's a late bid which is fine for where we sit.

Clubs with late picks they might use as a speculative bid on Banfield/Evans:

• Adelaide (16,48,55,61) - potentially taking 3 picks. If Curtin is still there at 48 you’d expect them to take. Also talk they might trade their F1 for one of Carlton’s early picks.
• Collingwood (39,45,56,58,67) - could use as many as 4 picks and likely to use their early picks matching a bid on McCarthy. With picks they need to use they are a possibility to make a bid
• Fremantle (20,47,64,72) - are only expected to use 2 picks and might want to hold a spot open late in case a bid comes for Whan after 47.
• Hawthorn (10,22,59,66) - Might make a third selection so pick 59 they might use on a bid
• Melbourne (7,8,37,63,65) - Might make 4 selections but also have Kalani White as a F/S they’d be wary of a late bid coming for
• Port Adelaide (49,69,74) - May not use a pick at all this draft so they’re probably using 49 at most then tapping out
• St Kilda (50,62,70) - Possibly only using one pick that could be them trading in to get Phillipou or matching a bid on Fincher if it comes late enough for them to be able to match. If they use pick 50 it could be a bid on Evans given their recently found penchant for indigenous players
• Western Bulldogs (14,33,53) - maybe with pick 53 but as with Melbourne they have Will Darcy as a F/S they might want to keep a spot open in case there’s a late bid

Collingwood look to be the biggest threat of launching a late bid with Hawthorn and St Kilda also possibilities to throw a spanner in the works

The other clubs don’t seem likely so a good chance at least one of Banfield or Evans gets through without a bid

Where things stand

List Openings:
• 5 Primary list
• 4 Rookie list - Cat A
• 1 Rookie list - Cat B

Draft Picks:
• R1: 1,2,13
• R2: 34,41
• RD: 1

Picks 1,2:

• Willem Duursma is all but locked in as the No.1 draft pick for 2025
• West Coast haven’t entirely ruled out trading pick 2 but it’s unlikely and they are yet to receive any offers for it
• It is anticipated that West Coast will make a bid for Zeke Uwland (GC Academy) with pick 2 and then possibly a bid on Harry Dean (Carlton F/S) after that.
• Further bids on either Dylan Patterson (GC Academy) or Dan Annable (BL Academy), whilst possible, seem unlikely at this stage
• Cooper Duff-Tytler is the most likely player to be selected with the Eagle’s second pick- very few, if any, media reports have West Coast linked to anyone else so we’re near certainties to take CDT or have performed some world class misdirection

Pick 13

• West Coast remain in discussions with Carlton to move pick 13 up the order to pick 9 using pick 34 and/or 41, but there’s been little progress so far or detail on what a trade might look like
• Other clubs (Adelaide, St Kilda, Essendon and potentially Collingwood) are also exploring a trade for Carlton’s pick 9 or 11, however, any trade is not expected until a bid is lodged for Harry Dean. Carlton may decide not to trade either pick at all depending on the timing of the Dean bid as when it comes will significantly influence their options
• The presumed target for a trade up the order is Jacob Farrow from West Perth, however he is also being linked to Essendon (picks 5,6) and Melbourne (picks 7,8) before that pick so might not be available
• If a trade for pick 9 isn’t completed, pick 13 will likely become either the 11th or 12th pick in the open pool depending on what Carlton do with picks 9 and 11 when matching the expected Dean bid
• There is very little/no information in the media on an alternative option to Farrow with our third pick - regardless of whether it’s moved up the order or stays where it is - so our ability to keep our intentions out of the media has been impressive
• As many as 10 players are a possibility with our third pick depending on trades and picks prior to ours - Farrow, Sharp, Grlj, Dovaston, Lindsay, O Taylor, Hibbins-Hargreaves, Nairn, Barker or Schubert would be viable selections in therange the pick will fall. There has been a loose connection to Latrelle Pickett from Glenelg and suggestions we’ve put some work into Beau Addinsall (GC Academy) as possible targets

Picks 34/41

Due to bids on academy and F/S players early in the draft and picks lost matching those bids, including possible pick swaps to generate additional points, these two picks will likely be in the 28-30 and 35-37 range respectively before other bids start late R1/early R2

There are numerous possibilities on what happens with these two picks:

• One, or both, picks might be used to trade pick 13 up to pick 9 which may or may not include a pick coming back from Carlton (they hold picks 43 and 54 currently)
• One, or both, picks might be used matching a bid on our NGA player, Tylah Williams, which reportedly could come as early as GWS (pick 12) or more likely from Fremantle’s pick 20 onwards. It is unclear how early West Coast would match any bid, but I doubt they’d match one from GWS with their first pick
• Make a fourth live draft selection based on who is left on our draft board, although as with pick 13, there’s been very little discussion around who we would be targeting with this pick - possibly because the media assumption is we will match a bid on Williams. We would have to guess who’s likely to still be available with our pick should we decide not to match
• In the unlikely event, a bid for Williams doesn’t come before pick 34 we might use that pick then match a bid for Williams when one comes or trade the pick into 2026 depending on who’s still available
• It’s not been raised in the media, but there is also a possibility we trade either, or both, of these picks into 2026 or combine them to move further up the draft order slightly. This would depend on plans around our own NGA and F/S players we’ve nominated and would only happen if we don’t intend to match a Williams bid prior to pick 37

F/S and NGA Nominations

• We’ve nominated Tylah Williams, Koby Evans and Wes Walley as selections from our Next Generation Academy plus Charlie Banfield (son of Drew) as a F/S. This gives us the right to match a bid on any of these players during the primary draft or add them directly to our rookie list if a bid doesn’t eventuate but we aren’t obligated to do so.
• To match a bid requires the following:
  • Picks 1-18: The points value of the pick less a 10% discount
  • Picks 19-36: The points value of the pick less a fixed 84 point discount
  • Pick 37 onwards: Next available pick regardless of points but, most importantly, only if there’s an available primary list spot. We have 5 open spots, 3 of which will be filled with our R1 picks, meaning we will only be able to match a maximum of 2 bids
• Expectations on when bids will be lodged:
  • Williams: As discussed a bid might come as early as R1 and in the 19-36 range. If we’ve retained picks 34 and 41 we would have sufficient points to match a bid from late R1 onwards. However, if we’ve traded pick 34 then where pick 41 lands on the night likely only covers a pick around 30 onwards. Trading both picks would mean it’s unlikely we’d be able to match a bid before 37 unless we used a future pick to trade back in
  • Evans and Banfield: A bid on either player isn’t expected before pick 37, if at all. That means points won’t be required to match a bid but an open list spot will - it’s likely we’ll have used a fourth selection by this point (either by matching a Williams bid or using a live pick) so we’d be in a position to only cover a bid on one player, not both. If there’s no bid on one, or both, they can (and will) be added to the rookie list after the draft - Banfield as a Cat A and Evans as a Cat B
  • Walley: It would be a surprise if a bid comes for Walley meaning we’d be able to add him to our Cat B rookie list post draft. However, there is only one vacant Cat B spot so if Evans also goes through without a bid we would need to move Malakai Champion onto the Cat A rookie list in order to add both. That would swallow up a Cat A opening the club might have other plans for so it’s possible Walley is only listed if a bid is made on Evans

Rookie List - Cat A

As mentioned above, we have 4 Cat A rookie list openings:

• Dev Robertson has committed to joining the club as a SSP signing post draft, which has effectively been confirmed by the club, so he will take one spot
• Finn Macrae has been reported by Josh Gabelich on the AFL website to have done the same so, although this has yet been confirmed by the club, he will take up the second spot. If the report is incorrect then this will be another DFA instead
• The club seemingly intends to leave one spot open to find a player via a train on process like they did with Sandy Brock last offseason - Harry Schoenberg (ex Adelaide) is one possibility we’ve been linked to
• We have first pick in the Rookie draft so it’s probable we look to select a player we like who has slipped through the main draft - based on our overall intake i suspect this would be a KPP or ruck option
• Depending on if/where Banfield, Evans and/or Walley end up on our list one of the latter two options might not eventuate - we can have a max of 4 from the 5 possible options of those three players, pick 1 in the RD and a train on option. (Assumes we take a fourth player in the draft - either Williams or a draft pick)

Likely Outcome

• Willem Duursma - definite
• Cooper Duff-Tytler - near certain
• Pick from the 12-16 draft range overall (Hope for Sharp as the best possible result)
• Tylah Williams - probable matched bid
• Evans/Banfield or Banfield/Walley or Evans/Walley - one of those three combinations a near certainty.
• RD Pick 1 - KPP/Ruck
• Deven Robertson
• Finn Macrae
• Train on option (possibly Harry Schoenberg) or Wes Walley
I thought WC has 4 "extra" rookie spots not just 4 spots. Please correct me if I am wrong

You are forgetting Livingstone got delisted I think. Livingstone was that Cat B rookie which takes us to 5 spots free on the rookie list

Our rookie list does look somewhat settled at this point with little to no surprises awaiting.

Robertson, Macrae, Evans, Walley (Cat B), Banfield

Tylah Williams will be the one to go on the main list which then leaves 4 draft picks

I can't believe we're going into draft night and are at risk of missing out of Banners or Evans

Absolute terrible list management, should of cut Barrnett or rookie list Cripps

Honestly, Clarke should be fired

All 3 are good prospects, we didn't need high picks. All we needed was a ****ing list spot

If we bid on Addinsall at pick 13, do Gold Coast actually match?

If they did it would wipe out there 2026 1st round pick which probably holds more value ?

Not a open and shut case that move

Depends a bit on where a bid comes for Patterson and if it’s before or after Annable/Dean as to how many points get chewed up by him and Uwland - particularly if we do in fact bid on Uwland with pick 2

Then they’d need to make a decision whether to match Addinsall if we bid or pass so they can match a bid on Murray when it comes. Twomey seems to think they can’t/won’t match both, and he also said he expects a bid to come for Murray first

Addinsall might be a bit of a reach with our third pick but he’s more an actual midfielder than the others in that range. Reports are we have put a bit of work into him

If we cant get to pick 9 id probably split pick 16 with Adelaide who would get a much different player at 13 compared to 16 (would be Barker/Marsh). If we slide down we can go for Addinsall as that reach

Pick 13 for Pick 16 + F3rd works

We basically gave up pick 20 to move up to pick 13 from that range.

I highly doubt we’re going to move back for a F3.

Suspect eagles have a tier which at least goes up to pick 13. We’re going to be taking that pick.

Had there been any formal confirmation regarding both Robertson and/or McCrae? Or even just sonething informal like a radio interview from Puke or Clarke?

I say this coz perhaps we've told McCrae his spot is contingent on how many draft picks we take - or does that not influence our ability to add McCrae at all?

AFL.com.au wont go with a guess like that when it comes to things like this so think we can trust them with the news. Its not like Tim Gossage said it
