One of in order of preference : Harry McKay, Sam Wedeman, Keiran Collins, Ryan Burton

One of in order of preference : Darcy Tucker, Mitch Hibberd, Clayton Oliver, Wayne Milera, Ryan Clarke

Of course if by some remote chance Aaron Francis is still there at 9 we take him and reassess pick 13 on a needs basis.

Having said that I have great faith in Ogilvie and the recruiting team and will back them in on whoever they choose.

One youngster that I would love to rookie if he doesn't get drafted in the main draft by chance is Yestin Eades, seen a bit of him locally and honestly believe with the right development could be better than Charlie Cameron, certainly has heaps of X factor like a lot of the indigenous lads.

Have just been watching draft prospects highlights as the all sound awesome on paper. Apart from Francis, another player stood out to me, (left the top 2 listed out), Clayton Oliver. Great pace, tackling machine, knows where the goals are, follow up, team player and of course..... A red head!!! Sign him up!!
I would like us to get him as well

I noticed that they really like to talk up beep tests, sprint times etc, but I saw a list that shows past players who had high scores and they never made it. Naturally exceptions include Nic Nac and Cyril.

Seems a bit daft doesn't? I would've thought that athleticism and endurance in particular would be one of the easiest things to change about a player from an AFL club's perspective.

I have beep tests nightly. Wife talks over me when I use an expletive.

I notice a lot of posters here seem to place great credence on individual player's "HILIGHT" reels which is a very small sample size and usually only the good bits, just hope they realise all recruiters place just as much importance if not more on what players do when not in possession of the ball, things like work rate, team first, temperament, effort etc. Also player interviews are quite important in the general scheme of things to assess the individual's character, leadership potential, off field temperament and how they will fit into working in a team environment etc.

Speaking of great characters Crocker is close to the best when it comes to leadership potential

Do they do any hand eye coordination testing?

I agree, look into Oliver's journey and what he has done to play footy. Would love to have a player with that determination at my AFC!

As is Darcy Tucker at the North Ballarat/Ballarat Rebels where he is held in very high regard by Talent Manager Phil Partington and Coach David Loader for his high character and leadership skills among the young group, very similar in that regard to last year's "gun" recruit Jake Lever. Also Captain of both his school footy team and the Rebels in the TAC comp, also Captained the AFL Academy Squad earlier in the year.

NORTH Ballarat Rebel Darcy Tucker is shaping up as the next great leader of men, with the young star named captain of the AFL Academy squad.

Tucker led Australia’s best young footballers against VFL side Werribee in a practice match at Simonds Stadium on Sunday. The Academy outfit finished on the wrong end of a 20.7 (127) 7.3 (45) belting.

Rebels coach David Loader described the appointment as an “enormous” honour.

“He’s our standalone captain and he’s just a great kid,” Loader said. “There’s no coincidence that this is where he is at the moment. Being the consummate professional, I think he was more focused about (how) the Rebels boys went on the weekend.”

Two other Rebels were included in the squad, with Yestin Eades and Jacob Hopper also named.

Ppl bang on about leadership way too much. Melbourne, GWS, Brissy, Gold Coast: maybe they might take it into account as a fourth or fifth tier thing they want. For everyone else it should be talent, attitude/character, role, athletics.
same thing in most cases

It'll be interesting to see whether we change our selection strategy with respect to the home state of our draftees. In years gone by we've had no issue taking the best available regardless of their state of origin, and while we've heard Noble & Ogilvie in the past say that they'll give slight preference to an SA boy if there's little to no difference between him and an interstater, there's been a lot of talk over the last few weeks that we'll be placing heavier weighting on locals this year.

By all accounts, these are the 5 most highly rated SA boys in this years draft - tipped in a number of phantoms to go in the top 20 or so.

Aaron Francis (192cm, 92 kg) - Utility
Ryan Burton (191cm, 90 kg) - Forward
Wayne Milera (185cm, 75 kg) - Outside Mid
Riley Bonner (191cm, 85 kg) - Utility
Luke Partington (182cm, 75 kg) - Outside Mid

Unfortunately it sounds unlikely that Francis will still be there at pick 9, the other 4 however should still be on the board for either of our first 2 picks. It seems unlikely we'd let all of them slip past, the question for me is do we take 1 or 2? Who would we prefer assuming Francis is off the board?

Having just traded in Seedsman & Hampton, and with Smith, Henderson, Shaw etc already on the list in that tall, quick, running defender mould - you'd think that despite his undoubted skill Bonner doesn't really represent a need for us and consequently would slip down the priority list.. My guess is that having lost Podsiadly and not really brought in any talls during trade week, we'll use 1 of those picks on Ryan Burton.

I've heard Harry McKay mentioned a few times and I'm a bit wary - these giant, 200cm, big marking tall forwards have been all the rage in the first round over the last 3-4 years, with some very early picks spent on securing the likes of Day, Dixon, Lynch, Patton, Boyd, Daniher, Wright & Apeness. These types are always hyped up massively around draft time (3 are tipped to go in the top 20 this year - Schache, Weideman & McKay), but are they your best bet if you're looking for an elite key position forward with one of those early picks?

Compare those names and their performances to date relative to what we've seen from the likes of Gunston, Cameron, Darling, Stringer, Hogan, McCarthy, McCartin. It seems to me that the more skillful, mobile forwards around the 190-195cm mark are probably a safer bet, and once you get over ~195cm (6'5"), that forward had better have some pretty exceptional traits other than just being physically imposing and a strong mark to be worth the investment of a top 10 pick. That might be enough to dominate at under 18 level, but in the AFL I feel a few of these guys get caught out when it becomes apparent that they can't just rag doll defenders and take chest marks all day.
He's highly mobile and good at ground level, turns opponents inside out and is good up the ground, prob better high than deep

He's only 17 still so if he was in next years draft which he is nearly eligible , he'd be top 3 if not a first pick

WA originally, he's been boarding/schooling at St. Patrick's under the St. Pats/AFL backed Indigenous Program whereby the lads are mentored in life skills as well as playing footy for the school, Jake Neade and Dom Barry two of the recent players to go through, an earlier notable player was Adam Goodes.

A very insightful and heart warming story earlier in the year by Emma Quayle about Yestin's journey to the AFL is a good read......and the lad can play believe me!
