My semi realistic preferences....But who really knows..

6. Heppell, Polec, Harper
30. Tape, Horlin-Smith, Mitchell
47. Farmer, Michie, Lester, Stienberg
51. Giles, Crocker, Milera

5 days out from the draft and I've got 2 scenarios I'd be happy with depending on who we take at 6.

Option 1 - Midfielder first:

6. Brodie Smith/Jared Polec - Smith is the one I like and reading a few comments above it seems like a couple others seem to also like what they see, concensus says that we're probably going with Polec though. Either of the 2 would be fine if we go with a midfielder first up.

30. Luke Mitchell/Tyler Chalwell - we need more young KP types and these 2 present as the best available IMO at this point, whether either will be available at 30 is the query.

47 & 51. Viv Michie/Daniel Farmer/Sam Menagola/Aaron Young/Blayne Wilson - For me its pretty much pick any 2 of the 5 and I'd be happy with them at this stage. All I'm looking at doing is building up depth in the midsized range and all these guys do just that. All 5 appear to have good skills.

63. Josh Walker/Andrew Phillips/Jacob Gilbee - The first 2 are both needs based picks, Walker is a KPF while Phillips another young ruckman and both would be a good way to end the ND. Gilbee is much like Collins was to Rusty in that he is a kid that I like the look of and wouldn't mind seeing at Richmond.

Option 2 - Tall First:
6. Tom Lynch/Daniel Gorringe - Lynch is the popular pick if we go tall, but I'm throwing in Gorringe as we could just go for that quality ruckman/forward to add some flexibility with regarding the reduced bench rules. Gorringe and Vickery alternating ruck and deep forward would certainly be interesting and would put some pressure on opposition backline to cover Jack Griffiths and a 200cm ruckman.

30. Ben Jacobs/Seb Tape - adding either would be great as they would allow us to use Lids in a more damaging role, either midfield or forward. Both have the ability to slot into the rebounding half backs role.

The other picks are as above, although I'd probably drop Walker/Phillips from the list and would simply take 3 of Michie/Farmer/Menagola/Young/Wilson/Gilbee with our last 3 picks.

* Note - I'm not a draft watcher as such, rather a reader of varying opinions and use them to build my opinions which are posted above. Some might not be as popular as those of you who do watch so I hope you will take this into account before having a shot at me.

I'd like us to add another tall to our list after years of short people during Walace's reign, but I understand the Clubs' policy is to take the best available in the ND.

Would like to see Lynch on our list but can see us probably taking Polec.

We have actually taken a fair few talls with quality picks in the last 4 drafts.

2009: 2nd Griffiths 3rd Astbury 4th Taylor
2008: 1st round Vickery 2nd:post
2007: 2nd Rance
2006: 1st Riewoldt

I realise that we've taken some quality talls in recent years which is why I only want to really target the one tall this year.

With less than a week until the draft my current wishlist stands as:

6. Jared Polec
30. Luke Mitchell / Seb Tape
47. Daniel Farmer / Viv Michie
51. Sam Crocker / Myles Sewell / Michael Hibberd
63. Andrew Phillips
79. Pass (Houli)

hectic i actually have a pretty much identical wishlist, like your thinking. i'd prolly also add leif cope to pick 63 and i don't know much about sewell and hibberd but i'm all for gtting crocker at 51.

i cant believe just about everyone is going with the notion that the top 6 is set in stone.

surely atleast one maybe even two of those picks will be different to what everyone expects?

as for polec being compared to fiora, i disagree, polec is alot more competitive, better contested ball winner, better mark over head and most importantly looked good against grown men

good point about polec. liking him alot.

also i dont' see it as all that surprising that top 6 is 'set in stone'. if i remember correctly, last year's top 6 was pretty much predicted by most of the mocks as well a few days out from the draft and it didnt' have the 3 guarantee picks from GC.

Just looking at the vids...not sure Smith is the way to go...seems to bomb long with alot of the footage I saw. Was impressed with Caddy though...could he be chance at 6?

I'll be at the draft at Broadbeach on Thu....will be interesting seeing it live and up close.

actually now i think of it, your probably right about the first half dozen going according to predictions. its probably after that when its anyones bet.

i didnt expect rohan to go quite that high but the others were pretty much predictable.

cant wait for thursday, funnily enough its one of my favourite days on the football calendar.

im most looking foward to our second and third round picks, the first pick is fairly predictable with only 3 or 4 realistic options, but the other picks will be a suprise:thumbsu:

i went last year, you kind of feel like your sitting at a dinner table while an interesting conversation is going on but no one can hear or see you so you just have to sit there and watch.

i enjoyed it, many otherr didnt, but i guess you need to have knowledge of the players and understand where they were expected to go.

yeah i agree..i went to the draft last year too, good experience if u take an interest in the draft and keep a keen eye on the mocks....otherwise may be a bit dull for others

Emma Quayle has her top 25 in order of talent out

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/the-golden-boys-20101113-17s03.html

A few interesting placings and Harper isn't in the 25. She's generally a really good judge as well.

Interesting no Harper or Mitchell in the first 25 ??

If we could land 1 of harper/mitchell with pick 30 & farmer ,Mitchie, phillips with 47, 51& 64. WoW

6. Lynch........... 6. Heppell/Polec
30. harper.......... 30. Harper/Mitchell
47. Farmer
51. Mitchie
64. Phillips

Looks like could be a really deep draft

I like her assessment of Caddy. He is the one i would love. Hard and tough is where i want us to go, and Dimma would LOVE him in the middle with Martin creating havoc.

11. JOSH CADDY

(Northern Knights, 18, 186cm, 82kg)

A madman midfielder who fights like crazy for the ball inside packs. Tackles and harasses, yet if he does get a few moments in the clear, plays with enough poise. Uses his height as an onballer well, makes people get out of his way and has the pace, endurance and strength to do it all at AFL level.

A lot of talk from the journalists over here in Perth that the Eagles should be taking Polec rather than Gaff.

Trevor Woodhouse has confirmed it will be one or the other and most people here seem to feel it should be Polec.

I thought Gaff was set in stone before this weekend but we may well end up getting trumped by the Eagles on Polec.

Brisbane appear to be big fans of Heppell but I wonder which way they will go if Gaff is available.

Also did anyone see that Emma Quayle had Reece Conca as a potential pickup at pick 6 for us... right out of the blue, but as others have said - she is a fair judge on these things.

Not sure if this has been posted earlier but apparently Brisbane are looking at taking Polec over Heppel. I have really started to like the thought of getting Polec but would probs be even happier with Dyson.
Brisbane is believed to have wavered on taking gritty Victorian country midfielder Dyson Heppell.
The Lions now appear more likely to pick classy Woodville-West Torrens on-baller Jared Polec with their first choice and number five overall.

Cannot see Harper lasting past Sydney at 21.

For me I am hoping we take Josh Caddy at 6 a goal kicker, tough midfielder. Then back this up with someone like Viv Michie or Luke Parker at 30.

if we leave them as they are and they dont come good we are just further and further away.

mcguane doesnt have the skills or decision making in my opinion.

thursfield just doesnt do enough, i think he is a natural defender and good spoiler but just doesnt have enough of an impact.

moore is the one capable of making it as a third defender if surrounded by good key defenders, but by the time we make the 8 we may have a better option.

as i said astbury is the one capable of making it as he has the foot skills, decision making and will eventually have the size.

rance will never be a key defender.

gourdis im not a fan of, for me he is an athlete not a footballer, and those types dont usually make good fullbacks.

grimes is one i rate, he has the football brain, skills are decent and to me looks like a composed player down back. of course he has a long long way to go, and im far from saying he will make it, but he is the type id prefer in defence to gourdis, mcguane or thursfield.

i doubt we will draft a key defender this year because we have so many, but next year im sure we will, with atleat 1 and maybe 2 of those mentioned above.

when we do draft a key defender he needs to be a footballer, someone who can read the play, make good decisions and has handy footskills. of course they need athleticism to go with modern day fowards, but a footballer first, then athlete.

I don't think you can just someone like that, you have to develop them and get the best out of them.
