Draft Week Idea -?

Had nothing to do on the plane today so:

If the complaint is that draft week is too long and clubs play poker till the last minute, how is this idea......workable or not

1. There is the normal pre draft club get together ......then after a two day moratorium where no deals can be done and all expressions of interest are considered ......each club has a total of two days per trade with each club able to trade a maximum of 4 players over an 8 day period.

2. If after two days the "deal" is not completed then that player cannot be traded but you still have up to 3 additional players trades at your disposal......each having 2 day trade periods.

Would this create the sense of urgency in trade week?

Would this stop the increasing backlogging of trade deals because these trades are conditional on another trde being completed.

Thoughts???

Clubs are just so scared of making a bad decision. That's what causes all the waiting and the frenzy of talking but little actual activity.

When you trade a player it may come back to bite you for years and years. Examples of player trades, negotiations and deals gone wrong get brought up all the time. Andrew McLeod and Fremantle? Carey/Wells and Adelaide? Mal Michael for Jarrod Molloy? The fallout from a poor decision is massive.

I don't think the format would necessarilly change this mentality.

I think we need to get to the root of the problem before coming up with a solution.

Why do clubs draw these trades out ? A number of factors I reckon.

1) The threat of the PSD. Clubs will offer stuff all for a player if there is the faintest hope they can get him in the PSD (realistically or not). It's more or less a scare tactic. Take the PSD out of the equation and I think we'll see trades completed in a more timely manner.

2) Judgement of trades in hindsight. More and more clubs are prepared to do trades only where they win 'big time' as opposed to a trade that 'may not work out'. Teams just dont want to take educated chances on other teams 'discards' anymore. Not much can be done about this.

3) The overvaluing of draft picks. This is the biggest one. For some unknown reason, clubs and their supporters have a fascination with draft picks. The ability to sell that a club 'has promising youngsters and will be a force in the future' to the supporters/sponsors, seems to be a line that will wash with anyone. Just like the Skipworth trade. "I'd rather take a chance on a youngster in the draft (at pick 53) than take Skipworth !" I've even seen quotes from recruiting guys like "Under no circumstances will we be trading our early draft picks !". What a joke, any draft pick should be for sale for the right price. To completely rule it out is short changing the club. Again, not much can be done about this.

p.s. - I like the idea you floated, but clubs love the idea of being able to 'sell' a player to the highest bidder, so it probably would never work.

I don't understand why everyone seems to have a problem with trade week.

Currently is goes for a week and teams can make trades in that time. If they want to trade they will, if they aren't happy with a trade they won't make it, simple.

What's the big deal? Some people seem to want to entice clubs into making trades for the sake of it. Why?

It's fine as it is. The opporuntity is there if they want it.

Agreed.:thumbsu:

If everyone really wants to see more trades and player movement the best thing would be to introduce free agency a la the NBA or NFL.

In other words we would keep the draft but after a drafted player had either a) completed 4 years on a clubs list or b) played 60 games and is out of contract then he would be free to find a new club on his own.

And the Victorians think their clubs struggle to compete with the big bad interstate clubs now...

Have a trade period that runs from the Monday after GF to the Friday before the draft. This allows for teams to conduct deals in private, rather than having Club A coming in to a room after Club B has all but agreed a deal, and undercutting.

Also, allow teams to trade picks from both the PSD and future years National Draft. West Coast may think their list is good enough for another shot at the flag next season, and may see the need to begin re-building in two or three years time - give them the option of trading their first rounder this year for a first rounder in 2008 with a team in need of immediate rebuilding. At worst, they will end up with pick 16 in the 2008 draft!

That happens now ...hardly anything is done on premise ...just paperwork and last minute capitulations on negotiations.

Like your second suggestion and it is gathering support within the industry ....at this stage only on talk back radio ...but isn't that where a lot of ideas are generated?

Shouldn't matter as long as there is a salary cap. I'm not advocating an English Premier League scenario but something similar to the NBA where generally teams have healthy up and downward spirals without a PSD is site.

Stiffy18 will have a better grasp of this then me.
