Would like to know the stance on our latest young draftees and trades in how you think there going.

Draftees
Conca
Helbig
Bachelor
Big X

Trades
Houli
Grigg
Miller

If I have missed or spelt wrong any of these I'm sorry

Draftees
Conca - Well above expectation.
Helbig - Going ok, but not in the same class as Conca or Batchelor at the moment.
Bachelor - Well above expectation.
Big X - No idea.

Trades
Houli - Wasn't actually a trade, which makes it better. Is a huge improvement on an untried rookie that would have been selected in the PSD.
Grigg - Improvement on Collins, I'd like to see his disposal be a little cleaner though.
Miller - Happy with what he's done for the team when he's played, both on the field, and by allowing Post & Griffiths to earn their spots.

Conca - Playing very well, very cool, takes the game on. 9/10

Helbig - He's got a huge kick on him, and loves a bit of biff, but is not ready for AFL yet. 6/10

Batchelor - Steal of the draft, doesn't do anything flashy, is solid. 8.5/10

*MacDonald - Not fit enough yet. Another one who loves the rough stuff */10

Derickx - Been injured for a bit, not sure. */10

Trades -

Grigg - Been very solid, a few kicking mistakes but is still young, will be a very good player for us 8/10

PSD -

Houli - Brilliant kick, does lack a defensive side to his game though. Needs to go harder at it, will once we get the Essendon out of him ;). 7.5/10

Rookie -

Miller - Has done his job, been serviceable, Griff or Post will replace him at the end of the year. 6/10

Was incredibly impressed with Houli on Saturday. Played his best defensive game for the club. I'm not sure if he was Reimers but when Davey came on he wore him like a glove. I reckon he will turn out the far superior of he and Grigg

Fair call...:thumbsu:...

Nothing has surprised me.

All to expectations except Nahas and Kingy!

Derrixx I thought might come on more but is a Ruckman and young so need patience.

The draft picks where better than the past except the Martins /Cotch's so expectations just matched. That is okay as long as we keep up the good selections!!!

Not a bad time for this thread.. A 1/3 of the season through.. Would be good to revisit this after R16 and then at the end of the season and see how opinions change etc...

Conca - The dreaded pick 6. From the get go has been unfairly scrutinised and compared to Heppell, although they are completely different players. Conca has poise, maturity and core strength/balance well beyond his years. One of those players that you don't worry about when hitting up a target. Usually picks the right decision and executes well and is happy to hold the ball and tread water around opponents. Whilst Heppell is getting all the plaudits from the media, us tigers supporters just sit back and acknowledge that this kid is a 200+ gamer...

Helbig First thought on this kid is geez... He has a beautifully, straight kick. When he lines up for goals within 55m, you are pretty confident. Strange for a young player. Doesn't have a tank to get to a lot of contests and as such rarely gets above 12 disposals a game. However, it is good to see the club looking for beautiful users of the pill. Very solid pick at that stage of the draft, will need plenty of development (and rests), but looking forward to him in 1-2 years.

Bachelor Absolutely nailed this pick. Once again, does not get the credits he deserves.. One could get more confidence in our recruiters for this pick rather than Conca. Solid half back flanker, who looks like he has been out there for 3-4 years. Never rushes it or panics and has trusty footskills. Keeping Connors out of the side after his breakout season in 2010 is no mean feat for a 7 gamer.. Reminds me a lot of Newman.

Big X Been injured and hasn't provided the instant impact which we were after with a mature aged ruckman, albeit he's still young. Good prototype player to have on the list and hoping that Dimma and the development staff can have him improving in no time. Too early to speculate with but as a worst case scenario - Adds much needed depth.

Macdonald Came to the club very unfit and was never going to be a likely selection in the first three quarters of the season. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get a game late 2011, however, needs to have plenty of game time at Coburg.

Trades

Houli It is easy to see why the players we traded for were in/out of their current clubs. They all have weaknesses in their game and I am sure we were/are aware of them before we bought them over. In saying that Houli has provided much needed instant impact to games and is a beautifully creative user in the back half. The main positive is that he will provide both an instant and long term improvement to the club. Solid pick and recruitment by the club, who fits all the club's policies and mantra's for trading/recruiting.

Grigg Guy has some flaws in his execution, however, he provides that extra big body in and around clearances. It is no coincidence that Cotchin, Deledio, Martin, Conca, Nahas etc are all getting more of the ball on the outside as players like Grigg, Jackson and co do the grunt work around the grounds. Am more comfortable when he is not deep down back ;) Another solid player who will improve significantly.

Miller The knowledge, experience and leadership that this guy brings to the club is invaluable. He is comfortable to come in and out of the side and understands that one of his main roles at the club is to take the battering of a CHF but then also step aside when a youngster is playing well in the ressies. Has provided a valuable focal point up forward and taken some heat of JR8 and Vickery. A good pickup for this year. End of season - who knows what will happen...

i think its a bit of perception thing, but grigg is certainly not playing as an inside player as much as everyone thinks, or he is and he spreads very well, because he leads the comp in uncontested posessions ahead of deledio and martin.

good read .. I agree with your view on Conca very underrated by the media. I believe heppel is going to be a good player in a good team but that's all he will be. I think conca could become that Benny cousins type player that west cost had. It's just a shame he isnt involved with the club any more.

yeah i wasn't sure about him after the dogs game but thought he played a really good defensive game against the bombers. looks like he's locking down a half back position for himself. Unlike griggs - who might be competing with the likes of conners for his spot

to have so many of the new draftees getting games straight up is great for them - not so good for the boys missing out.

agree but will add helbig will improve greatly with a more mature body to go with his guts and hardness.houli is a brilliant kick wen hes got no pressure on him and is a bit sus in the one on one high ball always looks shakey in that situation. grigg needs to eliminate the real shocking miskicks.

Conca, how impressive has this guy been. First 2 games played on Garlett, Betts and Milne 3 of the better small forwards in the comp and didn't batter an eyelid. Then started to push further up the field and has shown his class:thumbsu: 9/10
Helbig, shown some good things and has been impressive. 6/10
Bachelor, dead set draft steal and has been like an experienced def from the start.8/10
Big X, no comment. Yet to see the big guy play.

Trades
Houli, getting better by the week and very happy with his season so far. 7/10
Grigg, same as Houli. 7/10
Miller, done what he was listed to do and a bit beyond IMO. Pity he missed the weekend could have really created some headaches for the Bombers.6.5/10

Best thing about all the young guys we recruited, Hardwick has stuck to his word and picked guys that can kick the footy, will go a long way to getting through the forward press that sides are employing more often.

Conca-Love the way he goes about it Is hard at the ball, uses it very well. has set up numerous goals, has poise, is very coachable and is a leader of the future

Batchelor-very classy, gets the bloody job done. Will be more than serviceable for us in the future. As others have said an absolute steal

Helbig - has the tools needs the body Once he gets some upper body strength brad will be a very damaging player for us...bring it on!

Derickx- liked what I saw pre season Given our ruck stock situation at the moment, his chance will come as soon as he gets a few runs on the board at coburg Will be our no 1 ruckman in 2012

McDonald...the dark horse...I am quietly waiting for this dude to explode on the scene He was unfit when he first came to the club and then had some minor injuries which he has now ovrcome. After seeing him at a recent coburg game we all know D-Mac can play and he is my tip to grab a few games at the
end of this season to make tiger head fans get hard

Houli and Grigg -both great pick ups/ trades My concern with these 2 though is their attack on the ball - just feel they don't have the desperation I had hoped Houlis left foot is an absolute cracker Griggas disposal is at times suss

Miller- really like his wife...oh and Brad has also played his role well

Just waiting for our rookies to stand up
Of the 5 only slops and paddy contin have showed glimpses

Hicks and Westy have been meh!
O'Reilly I assume is injured...is he still in the country?
