Heading to NSW for the weekend... just curious as to what road laws are different from those in Victoria.

What's the go with the left hand turns at a red light?
Is the speed limit 50 on local streets?
Anything else to watch out for?

Are there restrictions on P-platers (ie - lower speed limits, passenger limits), and do they apply to Victorian licence holders?

Any help would be appreciated.

Definately 50 in local streets. No idea about the rest. (No traffic lights in the bit of NSW near me.)

The big one is double demerit points for speeding on long weekends.

Left turn at red light intersections are always signposted...basically you treat it like a normal intersection without traffic lights - go when you can

50 on a lot of suburban streets, but its often marked at the entry. Being Sydney, some main roads look like suburban streets so that can be tricky.

Dunno about P plate specific rules. Remember to drive extra slow across the border because thats prime speeding fine country.

Thanx.

Used to 50 for local streets because that's the go here in Melbourne. I'll do most of the driving I think, so maybe the P-plate restrictions won't be an issue, but I do recall an ex-g/f who was from NSW saying that L& P platers are limited to 80km/h on all roads above that speed (as it used to be in Victoria until about 1988).

So it's just signposted intersection for the left hand turns on red lights (as opposed to it being a law for all intersections) ? Probably the one that concerned me most.

P-Platers are strange up here - don't know how they correspond for victorian P's but basically red p's (first year driving off L's) is max 90km's, 100 for green P's (2nd and 3rd years). ALL streets unless otherwise signposted in the sydney metro area and all built up areas I think it is are now 50km/hr only.

Oh P Platers also only have a 0.02 alcohol limit.

We don't have those strange turn right from the inside lane rules - you either can turn right from the right lane (signposted) or you can't.

Lots of speed cameras and red light cameras up here too.

Watch out for the highway patrol near Holbrook and Goulburn too - nasty pircks.

Got back last night... went the Hume all the way up, then took in Wollongong and the coast on return.

One thing that I noticed on the way home was that in NSW there are plenty of rest stops, all conveniently located on the left of the highways....

In Victoria, you can go 100km or more without seeing one, and then it's stuck on the right and badly signposted. Mind you, every 5km there's big signs warning drivers about fatigue. Guess there's no money to be made from providing rest stops.
