GC Debutants

EDIT BY 54DOGS

Post all discussion here on rookies for 2011, be they mature age, draftees, PS draft or rookie draft. Doesn't matter if it crosses over with the positional threads, many posters will come looking for this information.

I've also merged the GC debutants thread with this one.

Cheers

So the new year is now upon us, and with it comes the introduction of the new GC team, and with it a host of new players. Many of these players will be at rookie price, despite some of them having been able to do be drafted highly in 2009 or 2010. Also, most of these players will get juicy TOG given the lack of experience on GC's list. And so for those who know very little about most of these players (myself included), this thread is a good place to discuss them. This thread is more directed at the players not picked up at the draft.

Which of these are the best selections? Which are most likely to get TOG? Obviously anyone else I missed?

Marc Lock
Zac Smith
Mav Weller
Luke Russell
Jack Stanlake
Hayden Jolly
Trent McKenzie
Charlie Dixon
Josh Toy
Matt Shaw
Taylor Hine
Brandon Matera
Rex Liddy
Jack Hutchins

Re: GC Debutants

Good thread given the special circumstances with GC this year. Plenty of posters looking for information on how the best 22 will look. Made even more interesting by the Rd 1 bye for GC so no look at their initial lineup when picking your team.

Pricing of the 2009 GC selections will be interesting. Many would have been high draft picks in 2010 so remains to be seen whether VS put a loading on them or leave them at base price.

From the list above Smith, Toy and Matera look the most likely for early games IMO.

Re: GC Debutants

The round 1 bye definitley changes my approach in this regard.
Toy looks the goods, but I'd like some indication he'll play round 2.
With the sub rule, is Smith still going to play with Fraser in the side? You'd think so but it's hardly set in stone.

Re: GC Debutants

I will pick Toy almost regardless of form and word or not if he will play.

He should have been number 2 pick in the draft this year, and priced at rookie price, can't go wrong.

Re: GC Debutants

Choosing some of the better (hopefully) cheaper GC rookies could make or break your side. Toy, Matera and Smith look the goods, but may get one or two others.

Re: GC Debutants

I've done a bit of research on the GC board and have come up with a Top 5 prospects (from the list in the OP):

1. Josh Toy
2. Brandon Matera
3. Zac Smith
4. Mav Weller
5. Trent McKenzie

Re: GC Debutants

Another thing worth discussing in regards to GC debutants is the maximum number there should be per position. I will probably try to limit myself to 1 per position, or 2 if absolutely necessary. I think it will be a danger to overload with GC rookies and a) not have enough cover on GC byes if there are other injuries and b) risk having many of your rookies dropped in a team which will be finding its balance.

If this is the case, the GC rookies I will probably get will be
B) Toy
C) Swallow
R) Smith
F) Matera

Re: GC Debutants

Good point. Is it worth potentially overloading with GC rookies to earn more cash? It's the question that will sort out the men from the boys.

Re: GC Debutants

Mature age rookie Michael Coad has recovered from his sliced kidney and is in full training. He seems to be well respected at the club and picked up both the 2010 Players "Player" and Coaches awards.

The GC aren't exactly over-burdened with mature age match-hardened bodies. At 27yrs of age and 192cm he looks like a good show to sure up a backline position.

Re: GC Debutants

I would think with 3 bench players you could almost lock a couple down as season long cover. You still only need a similar amount of cash cows as rookies so the extra bench space could be used to keep a toy all season long. Let's not forget they also give up to price rises prior to round 10.

surely they wont make the mentioned players more expensive just because they "should" have been top 5 or whatever:rolleyes:

Re: GC Debutants

^^No; According to FanFooty the un-drafted players will be base price, which is about 84k

Re: GC Debutants

That's true - I guess we'll just have to wait and see

Re: GC Debutants

Well these guys were the pick of the crop 12 months before the draft so some form of loading would not be unreasonable.

If they crank the value of these players upward then the MN would have to be decreased even more (in additional to the decrease required to be able to include an extra benchy in each position), making premiums cheaper.

Re: GC Debutants

How does that work Narkee?
Can't the salary cap just increase. (which I read was the case)
It could just be x amount to each GC player already on the list.

One tasty implication of this is that the usual round 3 tinkering of teams can extend to round 4 with the extra trades and the GC bubble being one round further out.

Not sure I get what you're saying Walesy.

Wouldn't the tinkering be only limited to GCS, Adelaide and North Melbourne players who have their byes in rounds 1, 2 and 3 respectively? Even then, players you have in your team from all other clubs will have price changes in R3 anyway.

you know how in round 3, people generally trade out their wrong picks and pick up the "next-best-thing" (TM)- Well the NBT's from GC, Ade and NM will extend through to round 4, allowing for more leeway in this trading period. (Unless you're chock full of the GC, Ade or NM already...)

In short, it gives you an extra week to make the call on any under-performing rookies, but also allows you to watch the GC before committing to them.

If you have committed to a GC player from round 1, once they have played 3 games, it's going to be a lot harder to get out of them if they aren't performing.

Re: GC Debutants

Hey, if we've got 3 teams that aren't moving in round 3- do you reckon that would increase other salaries- or just decrease the degradation of premiums a little for that round?

Good thought Walesy. Now we're getting serious, some would say Too Serious.

The decreasing MN is aligned to the TPP so it should flatten out a little slower with only 16/17ths of the pool adjusting. A large % of the movement will come from GC who have the bye Rd 1 so a little slower again. Plus in Rds 4/5/6 only 14/17ths of the pool will move as 3 teams have the bye.

So overall the MN should take longer this year to find it's true mark, maybe up to Rd 10-12.
