With pics like that they're lucky they didn't get more time, Dumb and dumber is too good for these twits.

US prosecutors have released photos of two Australian bank robbers dubbed Dumb and Dumber, who are seen posing for the camera while holding stacks of bills.

Anthony Prince, 20, and Luke Carroll, 19, were sentenced to prison last month after pleading guilty to robbing a bank. The men, who were working at a Vail ski shop, were given the nickname by the Australian media because of a string of clues they left behind that led to their capture the next day.

It was not immediately clear who took the photos or why they were released. US attorney's spokesman Jeff Dorschner did not immediately return a telephone call, but a news release said the FBI and Vail police would discuss the investigation on Tuesday.

The March robbery of WestStar Bank netted $US129,500 ($A170,000), prosecutors said.

In the photos, the man identified by prosecutors as Prince grins into the camera with $US20 ($A26) bills fanned out in each hand. The man identified as Carroll has his lips pursed while clutching a plastic-wrapped stack of bills and holding more in his other hand, spread out in a fan.

Prince was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and Carroll to five years - a longer term because authorities said he threw a bank teller to the ground. They were also ordered to pay a combined $US21,657 ($A28,500) in restitution, the amount still missing, prosecutors said.

Witnesses said the masked robbers had distinct accents and wore badges similar to ones issued by Prince and Carroll's employer. Ski resort employees told police Carroll and Prince used their ski passes to board a chairlift near the bank within minutes of the robbery.

Investigators distributed flyers with Carroll and Prince's photos from a previous arrest on vandalism charges.

An officer at the Denver airport arrested them the next day after recognising them from the flyer and their distinctive accents. Authorities said they had tried to buy one-way tickets to Mexico.

Investigators said they found thousands of dollars on Carroll, in an airport rubbish can, and in a yard near the bank.

Men robbed US bank to pay debts: report
October 22, 2005 - 10:50PM

Two Australian men robbed an American bank because it seemed the easiest option for quick money to pay off their debts.

Luke Carroll, 19, and Anthony Prince, 20, were last month jailed for the $171,000 hold-up of the WestStar Bank in Vail, Colorado, in March.

The Byron Bay pair have been dubbed Dumb and Dumber by the Australian media for leaving behind a string of clues which led to their capture the next day.

Carroll allegedly told police he owed money to people both in Australia and the US, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

"It was the easiest option for quick money," he said.

Court documents said Prince was going to use the cash to "get a clean slate and pay off all his debts".

The pair allegedly "freaked out" when they realised how much money they'd netted and "did not know what to do".

US prosecutors on Saturday released photos of the two, mugging for the camera while holding stacks of bills.
