Being a journalist must be the easiest job in the entire planet. Just sit at your desk and write articles so ******* obvious even a child could write this shit.

The AFL media is a national embarrassment.

It's easier than that. Sit on BF forum and type your latest stories from posts read online.

We aren't folding lol.
We are just as financially sound as St Kilda and Western Bulldogs.
40k or so members and no pokies.

Btw Dusty is as good as gone.

No chance PSD but the Tigers if they lose him will try all they can to get something more than pick 16.

I think something all parties will agree on is the compo will be manifestly inadequate, and I reckon there will be enough outcry that the system will be reviewed afterwards, but it won't be in time to help the Tigersin this case.

Isn't the difference between the two offers less than Richmond are paying Deledio to play for GWS?

Not sure if the tiges are paying part of lids salary after this season, but Yarrens numbers are off the books after this season.

What happens to players at big clubs after they finish? Mick Mcguane is a premiership player that had to coach Gisborne to earn a living. How good is Carey, Clarkson, Longmire and Simpson going?

This gold ticket for life you get from playing at a big club is a complete myth. For every big club player doing well in retirement I will give you one from a small club.

MCGuane had other issues that held him back. A brilliant footy brain and was ear marked to coach but his gambling and drinking finished it. McGuane was not a brownlow medalist. Big difference to Martin (if he wins it as expected).

I understand the concept. When the Hawks lost buddy and got end of 1st round pick I was ok with that as they had won a flag - no need to make them stronger. Also when the Dees lost Frawley - to the Hawks - they were a bottom side and got a top 3 pick to help them rebuild. Although that looked overs to me.

But the Tigers losing Dusty and pick 16 would only be fair in my view if you won this years flag. Last year you were bottom 6 and pick 6 is much closer to the mark than 16. With how tight the comp is losing Dusty could send you back down the ladder.

I can't see any changes due to the 2017 season being amazingly even. The 17th team smashed the top of the ladder team, Blues beat GWS - any team can now beat any team. Not sure they will change something that looks to be working.

They don't always sit down and write articles. Sometimes they get out and about, you know, to scrounge through people rubbish bins - ala Damien Barrett. Journalists are parasites.

Herald Sun, so I am not holding my breath.

Richmond will be armed with draft and free agency warchest if Dustin Martin joins North Melbourne

RICHMOND will be armed with three first-round draft picks and a recruiting warchest if raging Brownlow Medal favourite Dustin Martin accepts North Melbourne’s godfather offer.

The Herald Sun understands the Tigers will not match the Kangaroos’ contract, believed to be more than $10 million over seven seasons, for their restricted free agent.

On Tuesday, the AFL confirmed the maximum compensation the Tigers could receive for Martin would be a first-round pick tied to their ladder finish.

Rival list chiefs suggested the Tigers could then bank the cash saved on Martin and spend 12 months plotting a raid for Gold Coast superstar Tom Lynch.

The Suns’ co-captain becomes a restricted free agent next year and his retention could make or break the struggling franchise.

Landing Lynch, from Sorrento, would also ease the pressure on Jack Riewoldt, who will turn 31 in 2019.

Lynch, 24, was labelled the game’s No.1 player by Jonathan Brown and Dermott Brereton and could command the largest contract in the game’s history when his Gold Coast deal expires.

Richmond’s desire to lure a power forward was laid bare when the club confirmed its interest in No.2 draft pick Josh Schache.

Schache, 20, re-signed with the Brisbane Lions in June.

Richmond already owns Geelong’s first-round pick, which was received for losing Brett Deledio to GWS last October.

Based on current ladder order, losing Martin would deliver the Tigers picks 15 (their own selection), 16 (Martin compensation) and 17 (Geelong’s selection).

They have not boasted such a strong draft hand since activating five top-20 picks — led by Deledio at No.1 — in 2004.

One of their early selections would likely be used to match an expected first-round bid for father-son gun Patrick Naish.

The Kangaroos’ desperation to land a big fish has seen them up their offer for Martin as hope of trading for Greater Western Sydney’s Josh Kelly starts to wane.

Dustin Martin is being pursued by North Melbourne.
The Herald Sun recently revealed the cashed-up Kangas had enough salary cap space and board approval to poach both midfielders.

The Tigers are not prepared to sell the farm to keep Martin given Riewoldt, Brownlow Medallist Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance and prized recruit Dion Prestia are also on wealthy deals.

Martin and manager Ralph Carr will travel to New Zealand during the pre-finals bye to visit Martin’s father in a meeting expected to be pivotal to the explosive midfielder’s decision.

List expert Gary Buckenara recently said the Roos had to blow Richmond’s offer away by about $400,000 per season to lure Martin.

That discrepancy now seems a real prospect given the Tigers’ final offer is in the vicinity of $1.1 million per season.

“They need to do something pretty big … and get a big deal done for their own credibility,” Buckenara said.

Kangas legend Wayne Carey said his former club’s unprecedented offer for Martin would hamper future list decisions.

“They’d be neglecting their duty. That is too much money for one individual to come to that club,” Carey said on Channel 7.
What would 15, 16 and 17 be worth in regard to draft picks? Much more than pick 1? If they lose big Dusty maybe they can get little Dusty.

Yeah, i think the Tiges are gonna have to bend over, touch the toes, inhale and take it.
$1.5 mill over 7, how could you not take it? And the system is the system. Gil and co will tell us it's all fair and relevant and there's not a thing anyone can do about it.

Thats a really interesting point you raised.

Generally speaking if a Club were to fold, so to does the contract.

If we are being brutally honest of all the Clubs in the AFL and especially in Victoria, North would be right up there in folding first.
Why is that?

No mate, the fact you think it's plausible is the funny part. Like he will **** the club over to get to North. If he goes, he will go, but to think he would go to the PSD is one of the funnier scenarios i have read in the thread.
I'm a realist, i deal in real scenarios. But, you enjoy that book. Looks a good read.

Again I never said it was 'probable' or 'plausible' or any other words you continually put in my mouth, I just threw it out as a whether its possible. You said it wasn't possible as he is a restricted free agent, and that was 100% wrong. Turns out it is possible, regardless of how 'probable' or 'plausible' it may be in that scared little mind of yours.

Its ok, as I've said I don't think he will go, but he might, and there are a number of ways he can do it..

1.2 is still an amazing offer to play in a good side and in front of big crowds. I can see him staying. He did this last time - although the offers have doubled.

You kidding right? The days of clubs folding are long gone. With the TV rights, our membership and about to clear 10 mill of debt we have never been further from folding. The Tassie 3 game deal also tops us up nicely.

$1.2 is a great offer fullstop for anyone. But, $1.5 is better and there's never been an offer like it before. It's unique.
His last extension was in 2015 and it was done without fuss, but, lets face it, that 2015 extension was always about this one into RFA. Carr is just doing his job, and this is the new world clubs are in.

Are North allowed to offer 7 year deals when they may not be around that long?

It's like a Dick Smith gift voucher Dusty - don't take it!!
Maybe. More importantly would you guys have won a final in that time when Dusty leaves?

It seems he is looking at another 2 million if he accepts moving to North over the next 7 years. Its likely if he moved it would be a purely commercial decision. It seems unlikely even Dusty is going to lift the bottom team to a premiership in that time.

The argument I often hear for him staying is greater commercial opportunities if he stayed at Richmond to be possibly part of a successful side in its premiership window.

What sort of opportunities are these likely to be?

- Would he be able to do a Visy with some affiliated sponsor?
- Would it be something more subtle ... some anonymous Richmond backer (or backers) pay him or his dad money or property or something after his career finished (or sooner)? We know clubs have successfully done things similar often in the past. No links no foul.

He is never going to go into a Media career, he is not noisy enough.

He would certainly become an immortal for a significantly larger supporter base if he anchors a long overdue revival at Richmond but how does he gain a financial advantage from this?

Regardless of where this ends up you have to admire his ability to focus on playing great football despite the extra pressure.

Who won the flag last year? Where were they two years prior?

Arguments about future success are pointless because there are so many variables. If you want to go on recent history then you could argue that he is less likely to experience success by staying at Richmond.

It gets to the point where you have to take the money though. It has been reported (Caro, good links at Tiges) that Tiges offer is final offer.
North, it would seem, were rejected the first 1/2 times their bid was put in. Now we have a widely reputed offer of $1.5m by 7.

As I said before, I rejected more money to move until it reached a point where I just had to take it. $300k/year would be close to breaking point for loyalty.

1.2 over 5 or 7 still sets him up for life - if his manager is any good at his job he will have that money working for Dusty so that he will be able to not have any finanical issues going forward.

All you blokes think somehow being a one club player will amount to loyalty and $ long term from some unbeknown figures are delusional.

He'll take the money no better way than to assure his future.
