Have you ever wondered who has the highest kick/handball ratio in our team? Or who is the best at getting contested possessions?

No? Well..... fine, I got these stats anyway. Take a look, or don't. I put together the stats from the AFL website each week, and seeing as we have a week off it might* be interesting to have a look at a few. If there are others that you want to know (inside 50's, 1%ers, clearances, clangers, contested possessions etc.) let me know and I'll put them up as well.

*It also might not

Hahaha, it just goes to show stats aren't always right.
Or maybe people watch games with a certain bias in their mind ;)

Nico had a shocker in the first half on the weekend, no doubt. But he's been pretty good this year...

My main beef with it is that when Hurn kicks long, it's almost always to a target. When Nico kicks long it's usually to a contest.

Both would be considered 'effective disposals' though.

The tackling of Ben Mckinley and Mark LeCras is very disappointing.

Mark is having a great year but this is a aspect of his game that needs great improvement.

Just goes to show how much we need two or three quick small fowards on our list.

Please dear god at draft time bring me one Lewis Jetta wouldn't mind a Travis Colyer used in the small foward spot as well.

Then god if your being nice hand us Brandon Matera in 2010 please.

Stats don't tell **** all of the story here. Look at Josh Kennedy's and Mark LeCras' stats for disposal efficiecy. The reason they are low is because if they aren't kicking for goal they are kicking into the forward 50m where space is at a premium and bombing long is generally one of the best options. However because this doesn't hit a target directly (rather hitting a pack and pretty much giving us a 50/50 chance) it is no counted as an effective disposal.

I grant you those wishes, but on one condition, you are the girl in your pic and you let me have my way with you.

This is the stat that worry's me the most:

Contested Possession %
1-Nick Naitanui 63.6%
2-Daniel Kerr 53.5%
3-Mark LeCras 47.7%
4-Adam Hunter 45.5%
5-Brent Staker 44.7%
6-Darren Glass 44.5%
7-Mark Seaby 44.0%
8-Adam Selwood 42.1%
9-Dean Cox 41.0%

12-Sam Butler 37.0%
13-Matt Priddis 36.3%
14-David Wirrpanda 36.2%
15-Adam Cockie 35.4%

*In the top 5 players only 1 is a midfielder
*In the top 10 players only 2 are midfielders
*In the top 15 players only 5 are midfielders

Guys like Staker, LeCras, Wirra and Lynch arn't genuine Mids.
I bet if we looked at those same stats for geelong it would be 4 out of every 5 would be Midfielders or part time Midfielders.

This is our real weakness we have too many soft Co*ks who like to get easy touches rather then do the hard yards.

Interesting.
Not really.

Points effect DE%. Generally the top forwards have fairly poor DE% because they get a lot of shots on goals where points, out on the fulls and free kicks against all count as clangers.

The fairly high ratio of these compared to an often fairly low number of average disposals and the fact they are often kicking to contests in the forward 50 (where there is a higher chance of a disposal being ineffective) all effect the DE%.

The top goal kickers all have pretty low DE%, most are sub 70% with a few in the mid to low 70's.

Wow, good post.

I guess you're right, I would have thought Aker's DE would be around the 80 mark, because he's one of the better users of the ball in the AFL... and Stevey J's too.

Do you think it's a coincidence that all the highest contested possession winners have mature bodies?

Our kids simply aren't big enough to compete and win yet (besides Naitanui). It's not because they are soft.

This point in particular is dumb if you ask me. Sure they may have missed the goals but they still scored a point for the side. It also doesn't account for the difficulty of shots. That goes for any possession really.

Ultimately, those stats are only useful as a supporting reference upon watching their performance. The stats themselves are shit.

... except Priddis..... mature body, mainly a receiver.... with disposal worse than Swifts - who has been poor in that area .... :p

Where is Alphanumeric when ya need him. Surely hes got something for us.

One stat I want to know

Kicking to contested situation
Kicking to uncontested situations

IMO the 2 teams who lead the kicks to uncontested situations. St Kilda and Geelong, with Bulldogs a close 3rd. No surprise they occupy the 1 2 3 spots in the ladder either

Thanks buddy:o.

Yeah it is one of those quirks of football statistics. Due to the type of game forwards play you get these results.

Sheerly based on observation I would agree about Aker and Stevie J.

Also Underdog I agree, but I assume the reason points count as clangers is because the ball is turned directly over to an opposition player.
