Also probably low on confidence and possibly mentally fatigued

I get in trouble for saying rub but ppl on here turn on players that quick its actually disgusting

Tracking only just ok. Depends what you.are.hoping he can be as to how you see his progress. I dont put a lot.of credence in this is a tough team to break into.

Kids who turn into top class mids almost.always stand out early and break into best 22s. Ed isn't tracking like that so odds of him being top class are lessening for mine. He should be doing more in the VFL and when he gets his AFL.chances.

Don't think we Added Long in the Pre-Season as a SSP Prospect he was just there as a VFL Listed Player

Completely disagree…Ed slowish? Whaaaaatttt? I really have to question how often you’ve seen him play. The only similarity between them is that they are both 194 cm. Different skill sets, different roles.

Ned plays like an out of control bulldozer, smash bang, wallop! He plays with incredible intensity and strength, tackles like a demon and is very inside. Yup, his disposal can be a bit agricultural, and his pace isn’t too bad, but he isn’t going to win Stawell.

Ed on the other hand is very athletic, has genuine break away speed. He isn’t as strong or as inside as Ned, but is much faster, and provides run and carry. He has a nicely balanced inside and outside game. I can forgive you for thinking his disposal is questionable at AFL level, as he is still adjusting to the tempo; at VFL level his disposal is pretty good - a strength. My concern for Ed is that his intensity waxes and wanes, he doesn’t play with the frenzied intensity of Long, isn’t a great tackle, doesn’t run so hard the other way. It’s the other inside/outside players who are keeping Allan out of the team -eg Sidey, Pendles, JDG,

Two things.. almost always stand out early? Well that’s highly debatable for a start. Many examples of stars who took a while to come good. Dane Swan took 4 years, Josh Daicos 3. Hodge’s first 3 years were modest and the feeling was the Hawks stuffed up in not picking Ball or Judd, Kouta, was ordinary for 3 years, GAJ had 5 long years as a good but not great HFF before his breakout year…Kids develop at different rates..

Secondly, You aren’t taking into account the fact that he missed almost his entire U18 year with stress fractures in the back. He is effectively a year behind the average 3 year recruit

I’m not sure how much you have watched of him, but to me, he is not that good of a kick. That concerns me as he is seen as our best young mid ( not including Naicos ) for the future. no where near elite with his disposal

Steele would avg close to 1 OOB on the full per game. His kicking I think is fine, perhaps it becomes more consistent as he learns to better manage the moments.

I think he gets a bit anxious when he gets game time and rushes his disposal as a result.
His disposal generally is good - I think confidence and composure are the issues at present.
The remedy?
Full games, starting with ones against teams like WC, North and Melbourne.

Getting to 50 games is the remedy. Experience could resolve the perceived issues

People are too impatient thinking we have to play him. I'm with you. Unless WC has a brain fade and offers us something too good to refuse, I'd be keeping him and just continue to develop him. He was earmarked for inside mid and that's not going to work. A 194cm wingman could be really handy but as you said, he's no where near it as we speak

He's tricky for me to pinpoint. For me, he doesn't apply enough defensive pressure to fit too neatly with our current midfield group. I think that would be his best growth area. Not saying he has to be Tom Atkins, but just tackling a bit more, positioning himself a bit better to not be exposed the other way, and the like. You compare this to Long, who in his VFL career with us last year averaged 9 tackles over 7 games... Bringing very different things to the table.

I think wing too. Needs to get his running patterns and positioning right and stay tuned in whilst not directly in the play. A Lippa standard player is what I'm hoping for in the medium term, whose strength is running with the ball and breaking lines rather than exceptional kicking.

He'll get a long time in the system, with us or someone else, as his physical capabilities are so high.

It's not a coincidence that the best ground ball players are on the shorter size. Height for a mid is only an advantage of if it enables you to carry a lot more size and strength than the little blokes, otherwise it's a disadvantage. We won't really know if it's an advantage for him until a couple more years and whether he can become big and strong and whether he can use that size and strength.

If you’ve only seen those games I can understand your post. I’ve also seen several games where he is on, and then he looks mightily impressive. I’ve seen him burst out the front of a pack in a way that would make Judd proud.. I’ve seen elite run and carry, clean hands in the contest, lovely weighted hand passes and kicks.. unfortunately I don’t see it every week… but rest assured, he has weapons and strengths a plenty..

Yup, his tackling needs a lot of work, it’s his biggest weakness and you are right, he doesn’t play tall…

When you say he has talent to burn, what are u referencing exactly?

From what I've seen his kicking is quite poor, hasn't really shown much overhead

I'm not convinced on him offering consistent run and carry from the midfield - he's got the straight line pace so if it's open for him he can take metres, but he's not someone I've seen change his direction to cut through or break through tacklers to create the space ahead of him the way those who do it consistently can. For him to do it from the midfield, he'll need to really add some power and burst - which isn't out of the question, but not something I'd bet on either.

I just don't see him as someone who is particularly good with the ball, or in a contest for the ball. I'll be happy if he gets his running patterns right and becomes a solid wingman - I think that's doable, but I'm not seeing the star quality that others seem to see in him.

Watching him in the VFL on the weekend, he really looks under developed still. He's still only 20 and hopefully will develop his body more. It would be handy if he was strong overhead but he isn't. We can only judge by what we see right now and to me, he's got some developing to do. The fact that he's not a good 2 way runner is really holding him back atm.

I'd like to hold on to him and see how he goes after another pre season. Did you notice his skinny legs?, he needs more core strength. I'm with you guys on his skills atm.

Trade him.... honestly don't know what he offers. He runs around, but he isn't inside or outside. So.... what is he? He's 194cm and doesn't go for marks, WTF?! There's ZERO urgency/mongrel in his game and you can't play like that with a 194cm frame and without the skills to be outside.
