Player Watch Ed Allan

Pretty hard when Grundy is doing whatever he wants in the ruck.

Allan had the 2nd most clearances amongst all our mids with 5. Only 1 less than De Goey.

That's fair. Maybe it's the Long effect where I see him get less then 20 disposals every game as a full time mid.

I think we just have too many similar mids rotating through and I personally think Long should make way for Allan.

I'd love to have a mix of Nick, Jordy, Anderson and Allan, with Pendles supporting.

He is a Liability at AFL Level

Not even close to good enough
There is one bit of play in the 3rd quarter when he was sort of competing (next to Heeney) for the ball in the Sydney forward area on the right side of the goal - between their half-forward flank & forward pocket to be more precise - when he allowed the ball to easily go between his legs to Papley. In turn, Papley picks up the ball & kicks a pretty good goal. I think that convinced me that he is never going to make it in the AFL. There was just no sense of urgency in his attempt. I hope that I am wrong but I doubt it. Enough said.

he was ok I thought, got in the right spots plenty of times but as usual a bit too much fumbling and panicking. He’s clearly a mid and not a winger but the problem is you can’t play Allan, long and Anderson in the same team when pendles comes back. If pendles can somehow inject some of his composure into Allan then we have a player.

Can Long play a defensive forward role on players like Andrews, Barrass/Battle, Stewart type players with the odd big bodies rotation in the middle?

He must play again this week and for a number of weeks hopefully or he'll be asking for one way ticket home to Perth. He has loads of potential and I can see him developing into a very good player with some encouragement and opportunities in the midfield as opposed to the wing!

Funny how his best moments have always been when he attends the centre bounce/ball up.

Other than Lachie Schultz and Ned Long no other player divides BF posters as much as Ed Allan.

Ed Allan – what is he? A talented young player still adjusting to the speed and decision-making demands of AFL footy, or an elite athlete whose game may be better suited to VFL level?

On a night when Collingwood desperately needed some run and carry, it was interesting that Allan finished with just 62% TOG — only ahead of the injured Oscar Steene.

He had 18 touches, but very few actually impacted the game. Too often he fumbled or hesitated with ball in hand.

At the moment, I’m not convinced he’s a genuine inside mid. Right now, he looks more like an outside runner/wing who’s still trying to build the connection and composure required at AFL level.

Watching him play, he appears to struggle with processing speed and composure under pressure. He regularly defaults to the instant nothing handball — often putting teammates under heat — rather than taking territory or owning the moment.

I’d love for it to click for Ed. He is the ultimate Anthony Koutoufides prototype player. Koutoufides, early in his career was inconsistent and a poor overhead mark. At VFL level, Allan’s size, stride and acceleration let him explode away, recover from mistakes and play instinctively. But the tempo of AFL footy compresses time and space brutally.

Hopefully it clicks, because his tools are obvious at VFL level. The question is whether the game can slow down for him consistently enough at AFL level.

Do you know how absurd writing off a kid based on singe mistake, sounds?
Give yourself an upper cut!!!

Think he’d struggle on someone like Andrews and he’d offer next to no threat as a forward. Big bodied defensive mid is his most likely position imo. Still don’t think you can play long, Anderson and Allan together though. They all seem to have the same limiting factors like poor disposal and low possession count. If one of them goes on to be a 150 game player I’ll take it

How did it hurt us playing them all last night?

They were all servicable last night but they just don't get enough of the ball to all be playing midfield. Plus they all have average to below average disposal.

Do you really see all 3 as part of our long term midfield?
