Eddie McGuire going apeshit over AA selection

Is telling anyone who'll listen what a disgrace it is that not one Collingwood player made the 40-man squad.

But who was realistically good enough?

By my reckoning only Tarkyn Locker, Dane Swan and Heath Shaw would be any chance whatsoever and if that's the case then you could ask where the hell Goodwin, Thompson and Edwards are from Adelaide alone.

What a toss. Agree?

I personally think the 40 man squad is a joke.

Youd have trouble convincing me that 9 of Geelongs players are in the best 40 in the league, but whatever.

Agree DT - I agree that some of the selections in the squad have been interesting but the only Collingwood player I would have thought would be lockyer or Shaw. Shaw started off well but has been up and down since then.

Yeah, he's a toss, the concept is a joke and so forth.

But Heath Shaw is the most overrated footballer on the planet. He's just Joel Bowden mark II. Sure he'll get 30 uncontested possessions a game but he'll do no damage with them. He's an Ethiopoian man's Andrew Mcleod

I reckon in general the concept is sound, we got 5 in 1993 (first 20 or 21?) and no doubt could've had a few more in given our lairising possession-rich game.

As I've said before too, under this system at least we know that Chad Cornes won't get the CHB slot as a token gesture despite playing in midfield all year - you'll see forwards, defenders and midfielders picked on merit.

SHaw isnt All Australian quality. Hayden has had a much better year than Shaw.

Lockyer is the only one that I would have had in there.

He's a Shaw. Please give generously.

I dont mind the concept...

Its just i think the selectors are lazy. Too often it seems they just look at the best team and pick at will. Nearly half of Geelongs starting line up are potentially the best player in the league at their position?

Can someone with pro-stats list the goals against list for glass, scarlett and rutten, out of interest?

Champion Data have those stats, Pro-Stats probably have them too but don't publish them to us plebs - even those that subscribe.

Reading the 2007 AFL Prospectus, Max Hudghton was the best fullback in the league in 2006 when it came to goals scored by direct opponent but didn't get AA selection.

There is a perpetually underrated bloke from Adelaide who is almost single handedly responsible for us making the 8.

I didn't expect him to be noticed by the media, so a lack of recognition is understandable. Plus said player has plenty of bench time in his old age. But when he's not on the pine and in the middle, he's clearing the ball as often as anyone in the comp.

I heard a bit of his rant on Dumb & Dumber on 5AA this arvo.

Collingwood never get picked for anything ... wah wah wah ... some kind of conspiracy ... wah wah wah ... ignored in Team of the Century ... wah wah wah ... most important club on the planet ...

Then he was asked if the 18 games at the MCG was a consolation to which he replied, in true champagne comedy fashion,

"Well, you get 12 games at Football Park every year."

That's gold Ed.

Goody?

He is a Pies fan, he is talking about Scott Burns, and that is the only one I might agree with. Burns is very much an under rated player the Edwards of Victoria. Heath Shaw is soft as shit shouldn't be anywhere near an AA team. Neither should Bowden either.

Truck has been great - his stats are awesome.

However, as evidenced by the Brisbane game, we are usually double marking their big forward when it gets in the 50.

ie, Rutten holding out Brown while stevens drops off his man to take the mark.

We were a victim of it early in the year - especially the saints game, possibly why Max Hudghton wasnt looked at last year.

if it were that simple, brown wouldn't even be in the league. too easy to stop him. except that it's obviously not true.

lets be honest, eddie's is right.
he's very, very right.

Collingwood finished 6th, and they have not one player in the best 40?????

it's not even the team, it's up for consideration. ridiculous.

as he says, if that were true - it's not - then Malthouse must be a coaching god.

agreeing with Eddy may make you feel dirty, but it cannot be argued rationally that he is wrong in this case.

Whats with the Shaw-hate?

I've seen a lot of Collingwood this year and he has been brilliant; hard at the ball, gutsy, brilliant at reading the play, he's quick, has great foot skills, amazing leadership for such a young guy (don't forget he pretty much led their defence for most of the season with Clement injured) and he provides relentless attacking drive.

He's in my 2007 AA team FWIW (and yes I'm sure some of you will say its worth **** all).
