Cunningham said that the club had had an overwhelmingly positive response from its members and supporters in regards to the events surrounding Nick Stevens, however he understood that there may be a few that are disappointed.

Sorry, obviously none of you know what wheeling and dealing is about and none of you are in business. Footy morals, please, give me a break. You don't give up something for nothing. Great to stand on ones morals but in the end the result, what have you got out of this - answer diddly squat. By all means feel satisfied. Two biggest losers of this draft period - Power (lost Stevens) and Hawthorn (lost Rawlings) - both got nothing...

Great to hear you support the club’s stance with Nick Stevens. It has been a real boost to hear the overwhelmingly positive response we’ve had to our decision.



As you have probably read or heard by now, the club was not offered an adequate trade by Collingwood after we learned via Nick’s manager on Thursday that it was the only club we could deal with. Given that, we decided to not accept the meager offer and instead let Stevens go into the pre-season draft for no return in order to make a statement that we will not be manipulated by players, their managers, or opposition clubs. Nick is one of the comp’s premier midfielders and we would have liked a return for him but given the circumstances we are happy with our decision.

Forget Collingwood - apparently that was never gonna happen due to "personality" clashes according to Max Stevens on Fox Footy tonight.

But he did mention that Melbourne apparently offered pick 5 in return for Stevens. If that's the case, you've got question the club why they didn't take that one up.

I wasn't listening intently, so i may be wrong - but if I was a Port supporter I'd feel a bit ripped off.

What has this got to do with business? If this was the real world half the clubs we have to deal with would be extinct and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission would be looking very closely at the practices of Collingwood and the Bulldogs after today's events.

Sorry, obviously all you know about is measuring tangibles and probably you crunch numbers for a living. Dud and a draft pick, please. You don't give up something for nothing. Great to have some token offering from Collingwood but in the end the result, what we would've got out of it - answer diddly squat.

We are satisfied. We've stopped one of our greatest premiership rivals from being noticeably stronger for no real cost, we've set a precedent for the rest of our heavily non-local squad to take notice of, we've shown Collingwood and their ilk that they ain't going to get what they want all the time, we've given Nick Stevens a very good lesson in the benefits of loyalty, and all for only the cost of an SANFL standard player and a very late first round pick, neither of which would likely help us in the next three years (our major premiership assault) anyway. Thats a bargain.

Port minus Stevens should be the same as Collingwood + Stevens it makes no difference to us....and indeed:

Port minus Stevens + Pick 17 + Pick 35 > Port minus Stevens

and

Collingwood - pick 17 - pick 35 < Collingwood

So the "let's not hand our contender and advantage over us" line does not work. Of course relative to Brisbane Collingwood do not gain....but that has nothing to do with the price of eggs. As soon as we throw Brisbane into the mix we also lose in this non trade.

Bottom line it can only be a pricipled decision (which is OK). It cannot be justified on a playing list basis.

If you ignore the concept of time, then you're right, on a playing list basis it should make no difference.

But when lists consist of peaks and troughs of player development, then its probably not much different over the next two or three years from a purely Port perspective. Its after that that we might wish we'd done the deal.

Now if an instantly ready first 22 player was ever offered, you're right, there would be a clear and present comparative loss. But to the best of my knowledge there wasn't.

a fringe player still has some value though. We wanted 2 1st round draft picks....we were offer a 1st and a 3rd....this is obviously better than nothing, and whether it is Collingwood Brisbane or Carlton making the offer it does not matter in terms of our own premiership chances.

Pride and Priniples aside there seems to be a couple of options.

Taking your numbers from the other thread.

If Port = 600 and Collingwood = 600 and Stevens = 50

then so long as Port get more than 26 for Stevens they should trade

Ie not trading : Port 550 / Coll 600 - difference = 50

Trading if deal = 27

Port = 577 Coll 623 diff = 46 so....do the deal.

The bit missing of course is that Collingwood are not the best side in the comp. Take Brisbane = 700.

Under this scenario we should trade with Collingwood even if the value of the trade is 1 because relative to Brisbane we would be better off with 551 than with 550.

Of course we are better trading with Richmond in any case....but if all you have to trade with is Collingwood, and Brisbane are the best side then any trade is a good one....so long as it does not make Collingwood better than Brisbane....which is highly unlikely in this case.

You may be in business but you're clearly not a strategic thinker. Not every business decision is made for the here and now benefit of the organisation.

There's a fair bit of difference betweent the first rounder Collingwood offered, and the first rounder Carlton/Melbourne offered.
