des headland and the club appear close to agreeing to terms for a new 2-year performance based contract. it is said the contract worth a possible $600,000 is designed for "encouraging more consistent performance" from headland. mcpharlin is also reportedly close to signing a deal that will see him end his career at freo worth a possible $1.2mil.

sounds like good news to me:thumbsu:

Great to see McPharlap signing on essentially going to finish out with us...
I hope a performaced based contract will certainly motivate dessie

McPharlin's only 25 (26 in Dec) - how long is this contract supposed to be for if it means he'll "see out his career at Freo"? Not that I'm unhappy for him to do that - I love McPharlap... but a loooooooong contract for someone who has been known in the past to be rather injury prone would be quite... ummm... a risk, wouldn't it??

This just doesn't make sense to me, assuming we are tlaking about a long term contract for Elvis (haven't we learnt from J-Lo) also why are we offering Des a massive 600,000 a year? this would put him in top 10 payed players in the AFL if i'm not mistaken, and I odn't kniow about you guys but I odn't believe him to be top 10 let alone top 50 (maybe scrapes in at 48 or something) and yet we couldn't pffer Haselby a mere 450,000? I odn';t lnow what's going on in the meetings obviously but it just doesn't seem right to me.

Its $600,000 over the two years, not $600,000 per year.

Im going to ignore the trolls comments.

If we can get Dessie at $300K per year that is an absolute steal! On this years performances alone he is worth more than that and im sure he could get more on the open market.

McPharlin seems like a good contract however he does have a history of injuries so it is a risk for 3 years. The question for him is where he plays, personally i think he should be our CHB for the entire year and use Campbell up forward. With (hopefully) Hadrill, Grover and McPharlin down back we have a pretty handy setup.

Bring on 08.

McPharlin is probably a three or four year deal

Either way (3 or 4 years) with it being worth 1.2 million if it's a 3 year deal thats 400.000 a year....still good considering what he brings to the team (solid in both attack and defense) but then again I'd be over the moon if it was for 4 years at 300.000.....we can only hope:D

Just a quick question, how do these performance based contracts work?....if des will receive 300,000 a year is that the ceiling rate? or the base rate? like if he plays better than expected does his pay packet increase? or vice versa if he plays badly?....What's always had me querying these kind of deals is this....if say a player is on a contract like des and he get's a $1000 a goal bonus for every goal he kicks over say 30? and he end up kicking 60.....that's and extra 30,000 in the salary cap...and as such you'd be treading a very fine line in respect to going over, and as we've seen with carlton...that is NOT what you want.

So yeah basically what is entailed in these performance based contracts?

sorry i guess it wasn't a quick question after all

i cant remember mcpharlin having an injury over the last two years. maybe an ankle last year for 1 week. but i think he has been quite durable since they sorted his OP out, which was effecting his hamstrings, so im confident a four year deal would be good for both parties.

headland should have a base salary of 150K IMO, and if he plays consistently well he should be able to make up to a further 150K. giving him motivation not to slacken off like he has been prone to do since being at freo. i think that is fair

He may have done a shoulder/collarbone last year or the year before... memory is pretty ordinary lol

Yeah i have no idea how they work out performance based contracts. I guess they leave enough room in the cap for the maximum amount they can earn through performance. Im sure there would be a cap on how much extra they can earn.

I dont see the need to sign players up on anything more than a 3 year deal. That really should be the maximum. The biggest recently was Alistair Lynch, he got a 10 year deal with Brisbane didnt he?

$150K a year base salary is insulting to a player like Dessie. He would leave and rightfully so.

I think he missed 3 weeks last year with an ankle injury - but overall he has become far more durable the longer he has played. I am more than happy to have McPharlin with us till he hangs up his boots... and I guess $1.2 mil over 3 years is a very good deal for the club - considering what an experienced KPP would get on the open market. Newspaper reporting of course, can be a little misleading (;)), especially with the amount of cliche they rely on... but he'll be 28 when this contract expires - still plenty of time for him to change clubs if he wanted to... but he, like Pav, will be eligible for the Vets' list in 2012, so the greatest likelihood is that he will see out his career in purple. :thumbsu:

I would imagine he'd have a base salary say $250,000.

Then based on his gameday performances (could use the champion data rankings or the club's in-house measures) he would have a bonus situation either per game or per season.

It's very common in the american sports leagues, they have stuff like played X amount of games, etc..

NFI! Who's going to want him? He'll get homesick outside of WA, so no team outside WA will take him, and I can assure you the Eagles wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole!

His performance this year would barely rate him in the top 200 players in the league. Don't kid yourself. And in any case what's he done in the last 4 years?

Did not expect that from you Scham :p

Des was easily in the top 100 players this season.
