dont think its that bad a call

Hurley, Crameri, Ryder, Monfries are our primary targets.

Gumbleton is starting to worry me.
Starting to get a C.Johns feel about it. Injuries, fitness, experience are all lacking.

gotta weigh up that we lost Lovett for Williams and a couple of picks that got us Carlisle and Long.
Thats a big price to pay for a player that could have been an elite mid and no-one knows where his career would have ended up had he stayed...

Imagine a Fyfe, L Jetta, Bastinac or Menzel in the squad over Willo.
I think the recruitment of Williams was more about inflating the prospect of a finals appearance again than actually developing the list.

We would've gone tall anyway.
Lovett was a dead-end. Move on.

The choice we missed was Talia, Griffiths or Carlisle vs what we got Carlisle & Williams.

I think the overall result of that 2009 trade/draft situation needs to be stickied. No matter how many people post it, no matter how many times, it just doesn't sink in. It always comes back to "we lost Lovett and a draft pick for Williams! Damn Knights".

One day facebook will have a chip in everyone's brain so we can install the truth :D

Biggest problem in this era of footy, opinions seem to become facts very quickly and not just at the average punter level, seems some media personal are quick to call something a fact now days.

Some?

I can't really think of one journalist that does what they should; investigate thoroughly, writing pieces based purely on facts and information obtained, with a genuinely relevant contention.

Emma Quayle is fairly good, but her stories are hardly groundbreaking.

Still rekon the Lovett trade was good and the Williams trade was bad.

The Carlisle pick looks fantastic but would have been nice to get another mid type with that pick 16 such as Bastinac.

While Keane is the recruiting manager, isn't Dodoro as list manager, Keanes boss? So id imagine he has the final say and reports to Robson.

I may be wrong though but thats how id always seen it.

No not exactly, Keane and the recruiters sort them out, Dodoro does the stuff he is good at in talking to the family's, the relatives etc then Dodoro and the coach and football manager decide if they are going best rated or best mid etc
He has an impact but they do go off the recruiters lists.

As list manager he also works with the coaches and footy manager on who gets the chop at the end of the year.

Ant, could you give us an idea of how our recruiting team compares to others?

The impression that I get is that other sides e.g. Freo have huge a recruiting team with recruiters positioned in most states.

Do we have the same resources in this department? And if not, should we?

Middle of the table as far as fully employed recruiters go, we are lucky that we have had some good part time guys in SA and WA that have been really good.

The system i work in has a few more full time spots and a number of part time spots like mine which look at TAC and VFL here in Vic (3 FT & 7 in Vic) plus a couple of FT and 4 part time in SA and WA and 2 FT plus 5 PT covering NSW, QLD and NT.
We often get games , anything from colts interstate to SANFL reserves to WAFL seniors ,sent via email to watch and give an opinion on.
It is a lot bigger than where i have worked over the last few seasons ( i am back at my original club after spending the last couple of years working for an interstate side.) Who had about 3/4 of the above mentioned numbers

As far as Essendon goes i do not know the exact numbers but they are loaded more towards par timers, ex players like Ken Fletcher and a few others who get out and about.

Should they be spending more ? probably yes as the sides like Geelong, Hawthorn, Collingwood having the biggest set ups have also won the most recent flags and the Eagles who are struggling now but are also recent flag winners have a reasonable size set up with a few getting around the TAC Cup games.

Spending is not the be all and end all though, it is the quality of your part timers and former players or staff that is really important, if you have a good network of 20 or so across the states then you are in good shape.

One reason they hang onto to Dodoro is not his ability to sit around and spot good players but his network. He has a lot of contacts he talks to that see TAC Cup or are involved with clubs. People used to wonder how he picked any players at all given he spent half the game talking to people but that was where he was getting a lot of info from.

Cheers for that ant. Detailed response as always.

Hopefully, there is still enough coin left over from the coaching staff spree to spend on other areas of the footy department.

In particular, recruiting should, as well as development, be the number one priority.

IMHO we were always going to go at least one tall in our top couple, as we've done roughly the past 9 billion drafts.
That was the hints I got anyway

the only way williams will get a game is at the expense of one of crameri or monfries. they're both clearly ahead at the moment so i agree williams is well down the list for getting a game.

the worst part of the article was suggesting gumby won't be getting a regular game.

Williams in before Monfries? Surely you jest.

I actually agree with Robinson and Gullan. I would be surprised, even disappointed, if Williams is in.
