I can't help but think we missed an opportunity and so did Emac in staying another year at WCE. We won't be able to give him the game time this year because of the emergence of Barrass which means he'll likely stagnate in the WAFL (which is a waste of $600k). If we traded him last year we could've gotten Brisbane's pick 21 (IIRC this was on the table according to the rumours) and Emac couldve played in the Best 22 of a League team. Hindsight...
Brisbane would have had rocks in their head to do that, was a gun but turned into a spud post injury.

We were desperate for a KPD. I reckon we would have done that deal, but I expect late picks would have been involved in the trade in this years draft.

If Brisbane had seen him play in the WAFL last year I don't reckon they would have, even dropped back to that level was poo.

He's also pushing 30 iirc, not the sort of player you burn a 2nd round on.

No idea why we kept him, but keeping him was a West Coast type move. Is 4th in line now, and any trade value he had is rapidly diminishing.

WC don't seem to trade players unless they want to go. How about making the hard call and virtually shipping them out? He's taking up so much salary cap space that could be used on an actual elite player.

I have a feeling another reason it fell through might have been because we wouldn't offer 21, given what they ended up bringing in Frost for.

he also didn't want to leave.

Didn't he do his ACL in that time? That'll often do it.

Yep there's reasons behind it, but I never thought Eric Mackenzie would be on the give away pile in trade value at 29.

Is playing OK in the WAFL currently but it's hard to gauge how valuable that is for a key defender. Not like a mid who can run into form getting 30 touches a week. With McGovern and Barrass in we don't have a spot for him. Even Schofield who is more mobile can't crack a game and we're more balanced with only 2 key defenders in.

Played a bit of ruck and did look ok up forward last week according to Keys. A team with less of a team defence and more man on man type set up could be interested. he is still a very good 1v1 player. another attractive thing is that he is pretty good leader and mentor and both mcgoveern and barrass have accredited him with their rise. Someone like Brissy could potentially give him a 1-2 year contract to help add depth to their defence while helping out their young KPD's.

So even with Tom Barrass dropped, Mackenzie still can't get a recall.

Will he get picked up as a free agent at year's end?

If so, WC will probably tell the world they expect a second-rounder as compensation and then act dumbfounded when they don't get one.

Well, Mackenzie is back playing senior footy. And he's been OK.

Will he stay or go at season's end? He's an RFA.

Has done very well the last few weeks and done what he did best, blanketed his opponents.

Starting to regain his form of old.

Which club needs a 29 year old key defender?

I doubt we'd let him go without getting band 2 compo in return (pick ~30, not that great), so he'd need a contract offer equivalent to Mayne/Vickery.

One that is close to a flag of needs someone to take pressure off the kids developing.

So GWS or Lions.

A pick in the 30's wouldn't be great but it's almost out of our hands.

I like McGovern up forward and then Darling plays the 3rd medium /tall to take over Le cras spot, so retaining MacKenzie helps that.
