Essendon 2022

To lose to a fellow bottom 8 club at home by 80 points is significant

Not sure where they go from here
We all know where they go from here; winning the draft and trade week.

Just need to get these pesky finals out of the way then its Adrian time!

I'm actually curious to hear from Bombers fans how they objectively think 2022 has gone for them. They'll finish with 7-8 wins and a % of around 85.

Leaving aside all the over-the-top pre-season hype, is this about realistically where you thought it would be?

Sounds like Adrian has some work to do before winning October and November this year.

Sounds like him and Uncle Kev might have to sort Josh Mahoney out first. Just another pesky one for Adrian and the coterie heavies to swat.

Then the normal boondoggle can continue.

I actually think am embarrassing year is more likely to bear fruit than yet another middle-of-the-road year.

The usual feeling at the end of a middle-of-the-road year is basically, "Yeah that was okay, Something to build on. Feeling optimistic about the next year" etc etc. And that misplaced optimism, cycle continues year after year.

And that's the problem. In most years, the Bombers are never quite bad enough to tear the whole place down, yet usually "just" good enough to be optimistic for the next year without really making the necessary changes.

Richmond is a good example in 2016. After years of mediocrity culminating in three successive elimination final losses they slumped to 13th with a percentage of 79%. They lost their last game of that season to Sydney by 20 goals. This springboarded a whole lot of introspection and arguably catapaulted them to what they would go on to achieve, a mere 25 matches later.

I don't know what's going to happen next year, but I suspect we will have a better season in 2023 after being humiliated than if we were middle-of-the-road again.

Essendon has needed a season like this for a long time. They need to be embarrassed.

Sorry to condense your post but just top n tailed it for the relevant bits.

The problem is that EFC's malaise is much more than just their players. It is the people running the joint.

And those people are unembarrassable. Totally unembarrassable.

Sheedy, Dodoro and their coterie playthings. Totally unembarrassable. And apparently unmovable.

Dodoro has literally had your mids playing without any muscle around them since Jobe retired.

Was expecting to plateau this year. Still a fairly inexperienced side albeit with a seemingly bright future. Probably 10 wins was my expectation. I just don't like how some games they really don't look like they care, like, at all.

It's obviously a club culture thing to be so consistently average. 1 week they can compete with the best teams in the comp and the next week get obliterated by a team in bottom half of the ladder. Doesn't matter who the coach is, so that culture must come from CEO down where they only care sometimes.

Everytime I see Geelong play, it seems their players are all heavier, bulkier and bigger than ours. Even their mid-sized players are all bulky.

FWIW I think our recruiting over the last 3 years has actually been very good, if you go through the players selected. But that doesn't guarantee immediate success obviously. One day something will bring it all together. One day. sigh

Yeah Essendon have avoided embarrassment for years 😂😂😂

You know exactly what I mean. You don't have to play dumb. The club hasn't really had a bad year on field (taking out the drug thing) since 2006. I mean a genuinely bad year - competing for the wooden spoon type of year.

The club is never bad enough to be an on-field joke, but always good enough to win the usual 11 games give or take.

This year is different and I think that might be a good thing. The club needs an embarrassing year, because frankly, we just havn't had one since 2006.

didn't expect finals. But this is the worst season since 2010.
Weigh that up. We've had the drugs stuff, the ban year, the covid hub year....and we've found new depths.

Most disappointing is how our "leaders" just quit.
there's really no other word for it.

i thought we'd turned a corner last year and had the chance to build on that.
Added a good kid in Hobbs. See so much of a young Selwood in him.
Martin for a last minute addition has been great too. Clean, doesn't stop and has a lot of tricks.
Redman has really come on as a defensive general
Draper got more games in and built confidence
Durham & D'ambrosio nicely little ex-Tigers VFL gems.

Stops there
Rd1 v. the Cats. Season ended before it hardly began.
Freo training drill
Swans game was an embarrassment from the moment Heppell made it a party for himself.
Dreamtime week was diabolical on so many levels before the game even came round
Losing to WCE
GWS "effort"
Then what i assume is the cherry on top...though there is still next week.

This club has demons and skeletons it needs to purge itself of.
Mahoney should be given the keys. Peter Jackson should be brought back in for a bit. And just cleanse the joint.

The President is a jerk.
Xavier Campbell is a jerk.
Dodoro is a jerk.
Sheedy is well past it.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a group of ex players forming a new group to challenge the status quo and force a full Board spill?
too busy coaching GWS :p

I hate the idea of Essendon people trying to save this club.
but i do respect what Solomon and McVeigh have done since retiring.
