Yes but if the player wants to leave and you know he will again
what you would have got last trade period is always going to be more than what you could possibly get a year later

There was, mostly because last years draft was considered poor and teams weren’t willing to trade into it.

essendon were looking for a high pick (hard last year because West coast, Richmond and Essendon) had all the best picks already and those picks weren’t available to trade.

Beyond that their best chance to get a high level prospect is to hope to get Bewick as a father son and for that we need 2027 picks. Trading Merrett is basically the only chance the club has to get a pick to match that bid.

This season a trade (after butters has chosen) has the opportunity to set up the team to match a 2027 bid for a high pick which is better then 3 picks in the 10-30 range
