Missed the tag for some reason.

Heath Hocking. Buddha at his best was one of the best taggers in the competition but even if he wasn't playing a lockdown role he was still a very effective blocker at stoppages and would be useful to the likes of Mitchell, Cooney and Hutchinson if this side ever played a game. Some of the names that went before him are baffling (even one of mine in Murphy) and I'm very happy to get him so late in the piece.

Roy McConnell. Wikipedia says McConnell was a strong, dashing defender. He was well known as close playing spoiler with good spring and unexpected speed in his long legs. Surprisingly, he had a vision range of not much more than fifty yards, but this never affected his play. He had a remarkable ability for such a big man and was a top full back and centre half back during his career. He was a member of the 1949 and 1950 premiership teams and burst into League prominence by beating Carlton star, Jack Howell, in the 1949 grand final

FB: David Shaw - Roy McConnell - Dustin Fletcher
HB: Adam McPhee - Michael Hurley - Michael Hibberd
MF: Brent Stanton - Hugh Mitchell - Justin Murphy
HF: Jake Melksham - Alan Noonan - Mathew Stokes
FF: Tom Bellchambers - Ron Evans - Tom Reynolds
OB: Graham Moss - Adam Cooney - Bill Hutchison
IC: David Grenvold - Heath Hocking - ??? - ???

I'm gonna take the kind of player I think BrunoV would've loved if he was playing now.

Billy Griffith

Triple premiership player - as rover in 1901 and then amusingly as full back in 1911 and 1912. He was also captain from 1907 to 1909.

You're slower than Dean Wallis running around Fraser Brown
It’s taking me longer to search to see if players are taken. But I have found a hidden gem:

Charlie Payne

In the mould of James Stewart (kind of):

Payne started his VFL career in 1962 as a forward, at the age of just 17, topping Essendon's goalkicking in his first two seasons, with 39 and 36 goals respectively. He was at full-forward in Essendon's 1962 premiership side but played in the back pocket in their premiership three years later. He would remain in defence for most of his career but was also used as a follower

I'll take my man David Myers.

191cm, 92ks | inside mid and occasional half back

Played 122 games for Essendon between 2008 and 2019. He kicked 40 goals.

Drafted as an inside midfielder who played as a running defender who had a decent turn of pace and a cannon for a left boot. He spent his early years at Essendon being shuffled around the ground, even playing on Adam Goodes at one time - that is, when his hamstrings gave him a clear enough run at it. Said hamstring injuries reduced his mobility over time limiting him to 47 of a possible 112 games in his first 5 years. He then filled out and became about as big a body as you can get at 191cm.

2013 and 2014 were his best years which netted him 38 games in total. He was an important part of our inside midfield group mainly playing more defensive roles around stoppages and acting as a battering ram. During this period he laid some loose/stoppage tags and belted up the likes of Ziebell and Priddis who were some of the most prolific inside mids at the time. I remember him disciplining Dusty who was attempting a 'don't argue'. He was a real brute.

While he lost the speed he had he was still effective on the outside because of his ability to hit a target effortlessly over 60m (with a total range which gets pretty close to 70m).

2015 and 2016 were lost years. While he was solid in 2017 and 2018 he faded quickly in 2019. He at least had the dignity to drop himself as he lost form in 2019 and then drove our VFL campaign to a prelim. At the lower level he was a man among boys.

I was told by someone who had spoken to Dr Reid in 2014-ish who quoted the doc as saying Myers was one of the most impressive players during the supplements saga. He was a sounding board for many of the players and a real leader. His standing was recognised a few times when he was included in the leadership group. I understand there was a time when, his body permitting, he was a realistic chance of inheriting the captaincy from Jobe (or at least in the conversation as a bridge between Jobe and Heppell).

Neville Fields

Most improved in 71, B&F in 72 and state representative. Enjoyed a goal with 193 from 200 career games. Later in his career was traded to South Melbourne for one Terry Daniher, however he's in this team for his early 70s form.

Hocking is another of those guy whose best 70 odd games finds his way into any of these sides.

I was torn between Hocking and NLM.

I needed the versatility of NLM and thought the combination of NLM and Myers made more sense.

I would have picked both Buddha and Nat Rat for those picks if you had chosen Myers first. I needed the 7th defender and another midfielder. The next 2 are going to be annoying, the guys I want are extremely unlikely to slip through IMO.

Alright. I need some mongrel in my team. KYLE REIMERS

I'll take 2 time premiership player Bill Sewart

From australianfootball.com
+++
A superbly gifted centreman, Bill Sewart joined Essendon in 1905 from Castlemaine, and went on to play a total of 171 VFL games over the next 11 seasons. He was in the centre when the Same Old won consecutive premierships in 1911 and 1912, and was widely regarded as one of the leading players of his era. A Big V representative in 1906, 1907 and 1912, Sewart joined Footscray as coach in 1919, and promptly steered the club to that year's VFA premiership.

Thanks Shermy.

As I took Dick Reynolds with my first pick, as he famously wore No. 3, I'll close my team with another one.

YEP!

This is a No. 3 bookend.

Welcome aboard Norm Beckton.

Okay.

Thank you for that.

I completely forgot I selected Gerlach and Freyer.

I've lost my way in this thread so apologies if I seem slow.

Gonna add another name to the interchange bench.

With pick 181, I select Geoff Gosper.

Shermy is on the clock.

I'll go with Damien Peverill
