Re: Essendon to announce Danny Corcoran as director of coaching

This is a bad move on 2 counts.

One - Corcoran was the man who ratted on the club in the 1990's, in regards to the salaray cap breaches under Ron Evans (anyone see the symmetry?) and he was also the club's fitness co-ordinator at the time of the club suffering numerous long term injuries to the likes of Long, Salmon and Watson.

To those of you who don't remember the 1990's, this is the warning.

Heaven forbid we add a man of proffessional integrity to the team. He was also instrumental in helping us win in 1993.
I am not sure how he will work in the Director of Coaching role though. I suspect he is being given this title temporarily to take the pressure off Bomber Thompson, who I think will join the club in that role in the new year.

Re: Essendon to announce Danny Corcoran as director of coaching

wait. what's wrong with the first point? he did the right thing.

Maybe...but, by doing it, it cost the club a lot. The punsihment we got out of that ratting was to see us not have a draft pick in 1999 until we took Hille in the 3rd round. This, combined with premiership success, has ultimately led the club into being where it is now in terms of the list. We have a handful of 10 year players, very little depth in the 22-28 year old range, and then a bunch of kids.

Sheedy and Knights have had 1 hand tied behind their back in terms of getting the list they wanted because of the action taken.

Some would also say the way he has ran Athletics Australia, and his messing around with Melbourne's list around the late 1990's would mark him as even further damaged goods.

Messed them all the way to a grand final didn't he?

Re: Essendon to announce Danny Corcoran as director of coaching

I would say if Hird wanted him so bad, he is a man of significant importance and obviously Hird believes he can take us forward. I will back Hirdys judgement.

EDIT: So I guess he is the 'People and Development Manager' then? Okay. At this rate we're going to end up with a 'best 22' of coaches. :p

Corcoran was involved in Essendon's '93 premiership year and Melbourne's Grand Final in 2000. So I think the man knows what success is.

Also, the fact that he quit everything because he has a "passion" for the Essendon Football Club is a good sign.

With that said, while he may be well organized. I am quite concerned about his past experience in terms of coaching. To be a director of coaching, wouldn't you want someone who has coached before?

Will be an interesting Pre-season, and the year following. It's easy to see a clean out is happening, just hope it's for the best.

He has been appointed as People and Development Manager, whatever that is. :p Does not sound like a coaching role so much. Does anyone know what this role might involve?

I think its going to be best 21 coaches plus a super sub next year though...

Back in the day he was the man that helped Timmy Watson in his comeback year. From memory he had a falling out with Sheedy a couple of years later and left. Anyone remember what happened?

Re: Essendon to announce Danny Corcoran as director of coaching

I like the appointment..

Taking a guess at the "People and Development Manager" role, i think its more of a HR, Mentoring role for all coaches and players, (leadership and organizational development) to put it precisely..

Exactly, I was looking for an investment property in Geelong 6-9 months ago. 1 of the 6 areas dubbed as a future metro-hub. FYI I went Franga instead.

Nothing wrong with the Frang, good choice, a friend bought a year ago..
I decided on Springvale for an investment...

Whatever the pro's and con's of Danny what I like:
Jim is surrounding himself with guys he trusts and can work with.. get back the unity of our club and the "us vs them" club mentality (or "bubble") of sticking with our own

That he has been around success and clearly has a passion for EFC

That finally we are rebuilding the entire football department (something we should have done right from the start) and we appear to be serious about doing the whole thing right and finally using our wealth to achieve (hopefully) football success rather than a good "balance sheet"

Have to agree with Pazza.

As far as I know Corcoran was escorted from his office - allegedly caught trying to take game plans etc to his new employer MFC.

Strange that he is returning to EFC - But they say that Time heals all Wounds.

Ask Mark Harvey about Danny Corcoran.

The response would be unprintable.

So how would Mark Thompson feel about Corcoran, given the fact Bomber and Harvey are supposed to be really close mates?

I heard it was recruiting information. That he had gathered. But Obviously noone here knows the real story, and Hird has utmost trust in him.

If he had really done something so bad, there is no way in hell the club would let him back.

Corcoran is a great get.
