we never hid away from this kind of lark before, we had the golf club in Melton, the riverside

intrigues me to know how the AFL feel about the possible cannibalising of their market in opposition codes?

Might be the opposite thinking. AFL brand exposure in another league gets your name in peoples minds.

Edit- another positive is that this would directly influence the size of the sponsorships we can negotiate. Imagine telling Kia that instead of just AFL audiences you are exposing them to Basketball (throw in ESports if you really want).
A sport that im pretty sure has one of the highest participation rates in young kids.
Young kids= families = Kia make family vehicles = Essendon makes $$

I like it. A lot. I'd go and support the Bombers on the NBL stage, I love basketball and the chance of seeing Andrew Bogut play for us would be great.

Basketball has the second highest participation rate globally.

We went from being the envy of the league in terms of off field, into a basket case because those in charge refused to move with the times. Good to see the club being active again and looking to be ahead of the other organisations.

Even if a basketball team was to make a profit in 5years time you cant just rip it out of there and put it into the afl team anyway. It would have to go back into growing the basketball team.

Isn't NBL played at local sport halls these days? In Melbourne anyway?

It's a comp that has been struggling for some time and I really can't see it growing to the strength it was in the past. Would rather spend money on something that would generate a return.

Gets played at Hisense

The eternal issue for these sports - soccer is the same - is that unfortunately Australians don’t seem to embrace sport below the elite level.

They flirt with it but seem to only want the best.

Golden State v Cleveland or Real Madrid v Barcelona would sell out in Melbourne 100 times over. Yet the NBL and ALeague struggle for support.

This is about brand recognition first and foremost. Imagine seeing the name Essendon out there every day of the year in the sports pages...for the RIGHT REASONS. Potential sponsors would love that level of exposure.

We will probably start moving away from pokies, so additional revenue from memberships and sponsorships would make sound business sense.

On a practical level, we already have a basketball court at Tullamarine which we share with the Australian Paralympic Committee. We can also have a training base nearby at Keilor (and potentially elsewhere at Coburg and Broadmeadows).

Be hard to not to see this as a winner given the above.
