Essendon went into the Round 4 match severely depleted. Dustin Fletcher was a late withdrawal, injury ruled out Sean Wellman (finger), Joe Misiti (buttocks)and Adam Ramanauskas (operation), and Paul Barnard was sidelined with suspension. In the absence of the senior players it was the younger batch that stood up for the team. David Hille was impressive in front of goal – he finished with four goals. In his first senior appearance for 2003 Shane Harvey justified his selection with three goals. In his debut game Darren Walsh showed he has a promising future at the club - the 18-year-old gave the team pace through the middle and notched up 11-possessions in under one half of football. Experienced players Mark Mercuri, Matthew Lloyd, James Hird and Jason Johnson all stood tall for the team as well. Lloyd finished the match with five goals and Johnson was the leading possession getter with 31 disposals.

A young and undermanned Essendon side ran out victors over the Western Bulldogs tonight by 19-points. It was a team effort that saw the old and new Bombers’ combine brilliantly for their second win for the season. The team fought hard all night and when the game was up for grabs it was Essendon that took control and finally overran the determined Bulldogs in the fourth term.

WELL DONE!!!!
GO BOMBERS,
FANTASTIC WIN!!!!!

For the record, the dogs were missing experienced tall players in Grant, Kretiuk and Harrison, and lost Robbins and Alvey to injury early in the game. Robbins in particular was a blow, he has been on fire from the back pocket.

Hilles 4, and essendons accuracy in front of goal was the difference. I thought it was a great game with exceptionally bad umpiring on both sides. Can anyone tell me how hird got away with tripping murph in the last quarter? I thought it was crucial.

err, yeah, thats what it said in the first message that started this thread. Everyone was making a big deal about how many the dons had out and I just thought Id put it into perspective.

Collectively Grant, Kretiuk, Robbins and Alvey are just as important to us as your first 4 out. Ill spot you barnard over harrison, who I think is a bit useless.

I understand that,
just thought you were being a little smarty :)
But all is cool.

I must say,
with the dogs players out,
you guys still fought bloody hard and gave us all a fright in the first q,and even came back in the last....was scarey.

Good game.
