Saw on the Carlton board their under 23 team and it got me thinking about our under 23's.

From our current list of 38 players, we still have one spot to fill we currently have the following players that will be under 23 as at 1/1/08.

Dempsey, Dyson, Gumbleton, Hislop, Hocking, Houli, Jetta, Lee, Lonergan, Monfries, Nash, Neagle, Reimers, Ryder, Slattery
Watson, Myers, Pears, Daniher, Hooker.

As an Essendon fan how can we not be excited by the future ahead.

I would have something like -

B: Slattery Pears Nash
HB: Dempsey Ryder Myers
C: Hislop Watson Winderlich
HF: Lonergan Gumbleton Dyson
F: Davey Neagle Jetta
R: Laycock Monfries Stanton

Inter: Houli Hocking Reimers Dainher
EMG: Hooker Johns Lee

Haven't you missed Stanton out? Same year as Slatts I thought, & prolly one of the best on our list full stop. Quickly sorting them into categories of who have played good AFL to who prolly will never (& yes, I realise the middle two categories are basically conjecture based on little other than my own two eyes)... doesn't look too bad for us. Importantly, some of our most important players are in this age group. Hopefully we can build up a "generation" a la Geelong

Have
Stanton, Monfries, Nash, Ryder, Slattery, Watson

Prolly will
Gumbleton, Hislop, Houli, Jetta

Might
Dempsey, Hocking, Neagle, Reimers, Myers, Pears, Daniher, Hooker

Doubtful
Dyson, Lee, Lonergan

HF: Jetta Gumbleton Reimers

Our midfield is looking very very good with very good depth. Our midfield is already looking very good in that 22, and then youv'e got guys like Dempsey, Myers, Jetta, Houli, Hocking, Lonergan and Dyson rotating througe there......nice :D :thumbsu:

The emergencies are in the wrong order ...should be John Lee Hooker !

Davey and Johns, winderlich and Laycock are all 23 already

there are many tanlents on the list but it doesnt mean they are going to be very good players. lets hope most of them can step up next season, get fit most importantly. :thumbsu:

I am really hoping Monfries has a massive year and earns the respect of all the fans by putting in a consistent season. I think he has the potential to be a gun midfielder, but needs to be more consistent. Too much of this is conjecture but hope that they all develop as we know most of them can. Hope Gumbleton really comes through soon and dominates at Centre Half Forward for the next decade!

Mine would be

B: Daniher Pears Slattery
HB: Dempsey Ryder Myers
C: Nash Stanton Winderlich
HF: Jetta Gumbleton Reimers
F: Watson Neagle Davey
R: Laycock Hislop Monfries
I: Houli Lonergan Hocking Hooker

Really starting to take shape.

Not really happy with the Full Back line as I don't really like Slattery in the back pocket but I didn't have anyone else to put in there. Also Pears is looks like a huge talent but needs to grow a few centremeters and I would probably prefer Darcy in a forward pocket because of his contested marking.

Will be far and away the best Half Back line in the comp in 3 or 4 years.

Centre line is looking awesome with the deadly foot skills of Nash, Stanton running all day, with the number 5 looking great on him (I hope:D) and the pace of Winderlich breaking the lines.

Gumbleton will be our Riewoldt. Jetta occasionally running through the midfield but mostly on the HFF/FP and kicking a few goals a game. Reimers also moving into the midfield at times, he is a very good kick and looks like a great pickup for the late pick we got him for (47??)

Not sure about Watson, I don't think he has enough of a defensive side to play in the middle for the majority of a game, and he showed he can get the footy from a forward pocket (semi-final vs Geelong) also his clearance work in the forward 50 would be invaluable for setting up shots at goal. Neagle will hopefully become a Fevola type without the attitude, he has a booming kick. Davey is Davey, runs them down and worries the opposition backline clearing out of defence.

Laycock to hopefully start playing to his potential (Carlton this year, ANZAC Day a couple of years ago)

Hislop and Monfries two high draft picks, very highly rated, Monfries started showing signs towards the end of the 2007 season, and I predict Hislop will be an absolute gun:thumbsu: Only worry is the three starting mids (Stanton, Hislop and Monfries) might be a tad short, but we could throw Watson and/or Myers in to fix that;)

Houli very unlucky to be on the bench, will get his fair share of midfield time. Hocking looks a class above VFL. Haven't seen much of Lonergan, hopefully he becomes a good, honest midfielder and Hooker sounds like a good pickup for so late in the draft but I will be surprised if he makes it. We definately need a half decent ruckman on the bench to support Laycock though, and I was happy to hear Bellchambers was training with us today...

Which ever way you look at it, that's a sh*t hot batch of youngsters.

I just hope we get to see them playing this year.

Looks like a pretty awesome young Essendon line-up doesn't it !?!!! :thumbsu:
The things I'd change would be I'd put Daniher at FB, Pears at CHB, Ryder on the bench to come on when Laycock needs a rest, I'd put Watson in the middle to replace Hislop, then swap Hislop for Jetta so Jetta is in the FP, swap Nash for Demspsey, so Dempseys on the wing then we are all set !! Like the young gun team alot !! ;)

I would love to see that team play Game 1 in the NAB Cup next year, with some different positional changes
