Lloyd would need to kick a couple more as it looks like he would be the only one to put the game out of reach from the Doggies.

Aside from individual performances, I not in the slightest disheartened with this result. Much more positives than negatives from it.

Yeah that was weird!
Why so short?!

Good effort though,
Not disappointed at all.

They didn't give up and kept the game close..
even got in front by 3points..
Hopefully they can continue to play like this, this season.

Hawthorn up next...GO DONS.

agreed dasawx. it's a great effort. to be able to run out the game with three less players and a undermaned side is very encouraging. the dog's strength is their speed and fitness and we were able to go with them.

jetta has put up his hand for a round 1. it's disappointing that there hasn't been any mention of heff and pev doing anything that stands out. this was their chance to impress before round 1.

with so many youngsters in the side I guess we could have assumed that turnovers would cost us a few goals. if only laycock kicked the goal from 25m directly in front.

both teams agreed to a shorten final quarter before the game due to the extreme heat.

Bombers go down but signs good

Saturday, 10 March 2007

Essendon went down to the Western Bulldogs at Skilled Stadium this afternoon by 11 points but it was an encouraging display from the Bombers who were without a number of senior players. Dustin Fletcher, Scott Lucas, Jason Johnson, Jobe Watson, Brent Stanton, Andrew Welsh, Richard Cole and Scott Camporeale were missing for the game.

The Bulldogs on the other hand were only minus Ryan Griffin and Scott West. The Bulldogs also rotated 29 players through the bench during the course of the game compared to Essendon’s 26. It was a telling factor late in the game given the temperature was in the low 30s.

Matthew Lloyd and James Hird both had excellent hit outs. Hird had collected 28 possessions for the match and Lloyd kicked seven goals. Both players look to have their preparation for the season ahead on track.

It was a couple of the younger players that provided Essendon supporters with some real excitement. Alwyn Davey and Leroy Jetta both played some exciting football – they didn’t rack up countless possession but when they got it they made it count.

Damien Peverill did a good job through the midfield for the Bombers collecting 25 possessions while Mark Johnson (21) collected plenty of the ball in the back pocket. Ricky Dyson also got plenty of the ball collecting 20 touches. Jason Winderlich was another solid contributor with 17 possessions.

Lloyd’s form was a real highlight for the Bombers with only one practice match remaining before the real stuff starts. He led and marked with confidence and kicked very well.

Jason Laycock is also showing the benefit of being able to string games together and is looking more at home. He spent the majority of the day in the ruck with David Hille providing him with support.

Paddy Ryder spent the day playing in the back half and got 10 touches. McPhee played alongside him for most of the day getting the ball 19 times, taking 11 marks and providing some real run off half back.

Clearly the Bombers would have preferred to win but the signs are still good for the season ahead. They have some real pace through the midfield and can create better defensive pressure than they have been able to in recent seasons.

We have to be happy with that.

The loss wasnt too bad either for us superstitious ones, as we lost our NAB cup at the death last year, then went on to win all our practise matches which meant $ hit, then went on to lose all the games that mattered.

They were missing Griffin, West and had a Murphy & Darcy (if he played) coming back from injury. We were without Lucas, Fletcher and Johns (KPP, all would have been extremely handy given their lack of height) and Watson, Stanton and JJ in the midfield, and Welsh. Add to that we were returning from Perth, they had an extra 3 on the bench in the heat, and are a much better team whose coach was seething after their effort last week.

Great signs for Lloyd too. He totally changes the whole structure of the team.

Jetta and Davey kick 4 between them, we may see more of them in the 1's this year than I thought.

Dyson 20 touches, Winda 17. McPhee 19 touches and 11 marks.

However our goalkicking again seemed to struggle.

From the report no mention of injuries, which is the best part. touch wood.
