Essendon's alternate strip

Ah the jumper debate - the last bastion of Victorian arrogance. Our club, our tradition blah blah blah.

These issues take their eyes off the ball. Rant Rant Rant. It is the 21st century ladies. A century that has not been kind to you once proud Victorians and your once proud and powerful 'big' clubs. Take your eyes off the ball, that's right, focus on the side issues, bleat to the media, we won't change.... let the rest of the progressive clubs get on with what is really important. Their was a time, when you played in a suburban league that you could get away with your arrogance and hypocrisy, not so in the big league lads.

Nice job - ignore the point of my post and isolate a simple comment.

Huh? You didn't really have a single point. You made four or five disparate points and I focused on your most ironic.

Let's see:

We voted for [Windy Hill to MCG] We didn't vote for the clash jumper. Apples with oranges.
I was making a point about how traditions and emotional ties vary from club to club, but are no less valid. And neither should they stand in the way of progress.

It seems the ones who believe we have to have a clash jumper are thos e who embrace it. So embrace them - wear them and we'll continue to wear what we always have.
This argument would be fine if this was a cheer-leading contest, or one-day cricket. Unfortunately there are two sets of combatants on the field of play, so you can't isolate yourselves from this debate. See my previous to Mero.

Also- this logo schite argument - it it not the predominant part of the guernsey - it is a small portion.
You missed the point. Someone asked me how I'd feel if you changed your name to the "Bomberhawks" and I said I didn't care. I brought up the fact that the Eagles' logo WAS very similar to ours, but that also didn't care, irrelevant, etc. Clash jumpers is not about window dressing - telling the teams apart is intrinsic to the game.

And it still seems to be that everyone makes their jumpers more like us and complain about us. Boo Hoo.
See my previous post - you are fairdinkum kidding yourself - you guys are the cry babies.
I'm still waiting for your response to this, by the way. Nice job avoiding it...

I hope we don't get our guernseys in time - would be great.
I have nothing much to say to this comment. A big yeah, whatever.

You really should read the thread a bit closer. I've already said all of the above.
All you've done is make me (needlessly) repeat myself, but I hope it helps.

Cheers.

The problem with this is if we were to agree to the 2-3 games, precedent is set and before we know it, we are wearing it for half the season...

I don't think so. St Kilda and Freo like to wear two sets of jumpers.
But Essendon love their traditional jumper. They don't want to change, even for 2-3 games, so what makes you so certain they will turn their backs so readily on tradition.

The players were polled and a large percentage (something like 90%) said at times, they had trouble telling their teammates apart from the opposition.
It's a ridiculous situation.
The only people who are sticks in the mud on this issue are the stubborn crustys from Essendon and Collingwood.
The AFL should get tougher with them. All flouro green or lose the 4 points...

If it makes playing the game easier then that should be the only reason with any freight behind it to make a change.

The clubs culture and heritage is not even an issue...hell, we partner up with ManYoo in the UK Premier League and they have at least 3 shirts - home, away, clash...and sometimes they need a second clash shirt because of the European games and facing teams who have home shirts that are not even on their radar at the start of a season...

A club that has survived and prospered for 100+ years is not going to fall off the planet for the 2 or 3 games a season they have to wear a different jumper...

I feel that distinguishing between Essendon and St Kilda has never been a problem...particularly with white vs black shorts...

Anyway. The AFL really want something that stops a clash...how the heck does MORE RED do that?? They approved that...sucked in.
We're the ones that have to wear it.

Essendon would've been better off designing a more modern and attractive jumper, atleast then the fans could have two jumpers to choose from to wear at the footy.
135 or so years is an amazing effort to stick with one jumper and I can understand the disappointment of the club and the bomber fans to see that come to an end, I'm disappointed myself, but I feel the club has acted a bit childish in offering this new "design" to the AFL. The AFL are morons for accepting it if you ask me.

I wish Essendon could go on without needing to wear a clash jumper, but seeing as we're being forced to wear one, I'd much rather wear a completely new and fresh design instead of that ugly thing they're bringing out.

That's the design the MEMBERS voted for.

They voted for that one, because it was the most like our original strip.
You've missed my point.
Despite it being most like our original strip, it looks crap. If we're being forced to wear a clash strip, we may aswell make a fresh and attractive design. Tradition is going down the toilet regardless.

Fortunately, the majority of members don't agree with you. :thumbsu:

What I find ridiculous is that the AFL in its wisdom has determined that the Bombers, by wearing an alternate strip composed of a predominantly Red Guernsey with Black, and White shorts should some how be more easily distinguished from StKilda in their Red, Black and White uniforms!

Another crushing defeat for common sense.

Has it been confirmed that Essendon will be wearing white shorts?

Wouldnt it be more logical to have the Saints play in a predominantly white uniform, with small bits of red and black...

Sensible comment!:thumbsu:

I can't wait to see that rediculous obstinate expression of arrogance!:D

Thank you for your first & hopefully last post on the footy forum, now PO back to the games board, where you belong.

While we're at it then, let's move all Essendon's games, including finals and the blockbusters (including anzac day) back to Windy Hill, i mean why let the Corporate fat cats cash in on the expanded seating at this ground and crwod pulling ability of the bombers and lets give Essendon their tradionatl home back :thumbsu:

Actually, we were playing at the G before Windy Hill. And there is no clash with Richmond and St Kilda. I can see a clash with MElbourne though.

Another point: the black with the red sash is the longest worn sporting guernsey. We've never changed the basic design of our strip, and this year we're changing it for two games which aren't even clashes. All corporate dollars.

Here's hoping we cop the fine. I'm happy to chip in my bit.
